We should have 7/8 off the table until the draft.

North can only screw themselves unless they get 6 or better and if they do then it can only benefit us.

If they don’t and someone else drafts Taru we’re still looking at a mid sliding out of the real or imagined magic six.

If North pick Taru at 2 again a mid slides to us and so on. I can’t be bothered listing all the possibilities but worst case scenario is we end up with the next best mid and our choice of the best of the rest including Taru.

Given the above if we’re keen for more picks then shop around F1, F2 and 32 but leave 7/8 alone.

I think the only way we can screw this up is by getting too clever trading picks up and down or simply drafting poorly. You can remove the first by taking 7/8 to the draft and letting it play out on the night.

Imo this is one of those drafts where you get overreach and move up to pick two only to see a Smillie or Smith at 7 who then turn out to be the best player in the draft. There is nobody imo that I’m selling the farm for and I’m very happy to be picking at 7/8.

I think Richmond would more likely offer 10 & 24 given they potentially may not use 24 anyway

24 is the first pick of the second round. First pick on day 2.

It’s a great pick to have. Clubs digest who is left on the board after day 1 and some will clamour for it.

I’d be surprised if Tigers traded it.

They would be more likely to offer 10/11 and 23.

Tauru won’t be available at 10 or 11

13 & 15…bloody hell surely that can’t be right when North want Tauru

Don’t be surprised if North do this. Their list management is all over the place.

They traded pick 25 for the Caleb Daniel when they are desperate for talls.

I hope the inactivity during trade period reflects this attitude internally.
As you say, even missing out on one the magic 6 still gives the pick of the next crop and there will be players in that group that end up better than many or all of the magic 6.
By the time the draft rolls around the intel on a likely top 10 will be out there and we have the opportunity to ream desperate clubs or just walk away happy with 7&8.
There's the added benefit that none of us have to tune into the excruciating event for too long either

It doesn’t look like Richmond will end up with pick 2 due to their resistance to trade pick 6. To that end it will either stay with North or go to us. In my opinion perfect scenario is we get FOS (2) and Allan (8) as they would complement each other nicely and both offer very good athletic attributes and versatility to slot into a RTB gameplan.

I had him in

Thanks for the summary, assuming all of the above are available, who would you take at the draft?
If everyone is available and I have pick 1 & 2 not 7 & 8 and I am building a midfield which will be Pou + these two selections

Lalor and Jagga are probably the right picks that seems to provide the right balance Pou is the tall athlete Lalor the Power Jagga the ball winner

It might change if I was sure LDU was coming next year then Lalor is not such a priority (really think this is unlikely) and would swap him for FOS

But if I was just picking who I like it would be Reid and FOS they are the most watchable

Realistically I hope some combo of proven high possession mid and athletic freak

Reid/Jagga paired with Smillie/Allan

Could all change with pick swaps

It is good timing for us that this draft is midfield deep and there is an argument that any of the top 10 could end up the best player in this draft and the thing none of us armchair drafters get to see is what they are like off field. Who is going to work the hardest, who is the leader and alternatively who is going to chuck a hissy fit when Ross sends them back to Sandy to work on their game. We appear to be building a core of young players like we did with the 2000 - 2003 crop that are kind of in it together to have success and are creating a kind of peer group that drives all of them to be better. Whoever we add needs to be part of that culture.

Dream scenario but will Norff accept a future first, because they are very rightly wanting multiple picks this year. I suppose when they're out of options they just have to make the best of it, but the flip side is it basically eliminates any further options for ourselves but if we walk away with FOS and Allan we're not gonna complain about much (for a day at least).

You know Ross is the boss of SoS Dalrymple Gubby.

They won’t make a trade etc unless he signs off.
Can someone please save us from this messiah complex.

Lyon has failed to win every grand final his teams have played in. He had easily the best squad we've had in the last 20 years and he didn't deliver.

Good coach but not successful enough to justify the all in mentality that Bassat seems to have implemented.

Yes Ross No Ross is no way to run the show.

Combine testing is possibly the most overated thing by fans ever. Such a fad. Sometimes only sometimes does it prove much. I take more consideration into the 2km and yoyo then anything else.

Its why a lot of kids feign injuries and dont do any testing, as it actually effects their draft chances or where they would be picked up.

Joe Berry best small forward/high half forward in the draft, how do we get him?
Only shot is if we split 8, and then he's got to be the best option available at one of those picks - which is a tricky thing considering we'd likely prefer Lindsay, Trainor, Dodson, Shanahan or a Whitlock.

Does this potentially reek of North then trying to come at us with a deal that involves swapping pick 13 and something else for our pick 7 or 8?

I ask because there's no way that Tauru gets to 13......

North only have a future first.

We want picks this year.

North need either Richmond’s pick 6 or our pick 7 if they are going to trade-down from pick 2.

They have no other choice if they want Tauru.

Bugger them. Let’s draft the lad ourselves.

How much weight do you put on Lyon & the coaches getting that squad to the 09/10 GFs, and how much do you put on the players?

Once we were in, how much of what happened during both games do you put on Lyon & the coaches, and how much do you put on the players?

Only risks are
1. if a bid comes in earlier than our current pick 47 (will fall around pick 41 after ngas). - which will mean we lose that pick.
2. If the bid falls between our pick 47 and pick 56. We will need to find more points or go into deficit in the 3rd/4th round in 2025 draft.

We may look to trade some late picks for these reasons.

Refer below for possible bids that will not put St kilda into deficit.

Because next years picks after #54 will be worth nothing and this years pick #54 is still 220 points, certain clubs will be happy to trade out 2025 picks later than #54 or even earlier with little value. As an example if Cole gets bid on at #35 = 522 points we hold #47 = 316 points we will need to find 206 points. Pick #55 next year is worth zip, but trade it into this year and its value is 207 points.

Lets just pray that no bids come before our pick #32 and we can use it on a live pick.

We have an obvious need for another ruckman, we may consider grabbing a young ruckman Sims/Gerryn at #32! Particularly if we dont acquire a pick in the 15-20 range to grab Dodson. If neither occur I can see us also wanting to get ahead of Geelong at #45 to take the WAFL ruckman we are interested in - Blakiston. The other option is backing Heath and grabbing Max Knobel as a DFA.

Either way the phone is going to be running hot in the Saints war room over the period. I love the intricacies of the trade and draft period these days and its only going to get better next year when clubs are allowed to trade picks two years in advance. Thats when really smart List Management teams will be able to make big gains dealing in future picks.

Ps I forgot the NGA & FS discounts is it still 20% or now 10%.

You need to have a read of the rules

Also, why in the world would we use a pick 45 on a 26 year old WAFL reserves ruckman in a deep draft?

If we take him, it'd be as a rookie, as has already been reported

If Geelong take him then so be it. There are PLENTY of other options
