All this squawking about who are the first two draft picks are. I want to know the real mystery of the Saints draft. Which Sandy spud will we rookie? Pretty lean picking now with so many leaving.

I think Saints mentioned already the NGA players getting a game and also Peckett - will qualify for that agreement

People keep repeating this on the basis that it was mentioned “somewhere”. It was hypothesised in this forum and has never been officially mentioned anywhere.
It would completely fly in the face of the agreement also. It’s to convince half decent players to sign with sandy as they might get picked up. If we just sign an 18yo from the Coates league that is not meeting the intent.
Better off just being honest and saying no one is good enough this year, instead of trying to convince people we’re actually complying.

Think Jon Ralph confirmed it

Correct me if I am wrong, but there was no real love for Justin when he first started at the Saints, delisted, then picked at #49, played one game in his first year, then went on to play over 250 games. We don't always allow for the luxury of time to develop players these days. If he is like his dad, it might be a slow burn until he matures.
Looked pretty good in some games this year so yeah I’m very happy to add him to our list.

i have to disagree with him. its pretty easy to say it, but the reality is the need for a genuine elite mid has been missed again, if it pans out the way he thinks it will.

our only hope is adelaide call out langford which is looking unlikely.

Mate, I’ve always said my position can change based on any decision.

I thought the club did the right thing with Battle and won.

But If the draft plays out as it is painted by Twomey. It’s a big L
Just a sec
Myself and a few others wanted to keep Battle because of this very scenario but were shouted down from the roof tops. were told that it wasn't a risk and an A grade mid was the only option

I said much earlier its always a risk losing a very good player ( last 3 years 2 top tens and a 3rd in the B&F) for magic beans

exactly this. it was always going to be extremely difficult to turn battle into an elite mid. there were too many moving parts.

  • needed ladder position
  • needed the compo to happen
  • needed the draft order to work
  • needed to select the right player
  • needed to develop said player into an elite mid

we didnt even get past step 1.

i'd rather pay battle 900k a year for 6 years than be in this position, where according to twomey we are selecting the very player battle already is. so we are going to spend the next 3-5 years developing the guy to see if he can even reach the level battle already was at.

its redic.

if people think this is good list management then you're going to spend the rest of your life watching the saints trying to get into the 6. continually providing other clubs with ready made talent for their own finals push.

Missions owns words yesterday was that we wanted a mid and hoped 1 or 2 sat at our picks.

So however they rate this drafts top end.

They think/hope they get a mid.

Cals mock was no mid.

So if that’s how it played out. They ****ed up.
So if it doe's play out like that, who we holding responsible ?

SOS & Gubby ?

We do need a top tier mid more than we need a 3rd tall defender. That part is correct.

The cards at this point don't seem to be falling our way. I'd argue we have the currency to buy into a better spot to nab one of the mooted 'top 6 mids' but maybe we rate the top 10 differently.

At this point, I'll be frustrated if our outcome is two defenders in the top 10.

100% its untenable. you can't shop the idea of a top 5 pick to rebuild the midfield, highlight battle as that very avenue to get it, then turn around be like "oh shit sorry, bad luck"

It hasnt been "missed" by any fault of the Club. We could only trade up if another club were willing to trade. Obviously they didnt. Not the Club's fault

Too many people carrying on like we had 2 of those mids available and we picked T and T instead. We can only play the cards we are dealt

We know we were in for Picks 3&9 and got neither.

We haven’t moved from 7&8 either and the likely outcome is splitting 8.

That says enough about our intentions.

Another season without genuine mids if we miss this draft. Another year of Row Sincs Steele and Wilkie wasted.
Not even in the conversation for 9 and never really in the mix for 3

My personal preference after big 6:

Allan
Lindsay
Travaglia
Tauru

In that order.
Happy enough with trav/tauru

Is it just me or is Tauru’s disposal highly suspect?
Looks a great athlete though and can read the play.
Why so high on Allan I’m not getting that at all. Is it the senior wafl exposure ? Quite a few kids played vfl here and played very well, I’d rate that highly. Still he is by his own admission a half back with little midfield craft.

Is it just me or have our phantom write ups been very much ‘take the next one in the order’? Ie I haven’t read much if anything that says “Saints love x or y”. Maybe reference to Lindsay. Berry is a new one thrown up. But most of the commentary hasn’t really alluded to anything suggesting that a club is trying to get ahead of us for someone or we’re trying to do the same and so on. I could be wrong.

No idea.

But they seemingly think a mid will be on the board don’t they?

We hope there’s a couple of mids at that time, but we’re looking at taking the best players at (pick) seven and eight.”

Mate,

I still think we will get at least very good mid with either 7 or 8

Just can't believe people are taking last nights mock draft as gospel. Cal himself has said this year is very even and hard to pick

Reading between the lines
1. We don't rate Murphy Reid
2. We may not rate Josh Smillie (based on the thought he could slide through to Richmonds next pick)
3. We really do rate Traviglia possibly higher than some of the 6 top end mids (I get that he is going to be a really good player)
4. We are not as keen on Allan as Richmond and Melbourne
5. We do rate Draper (meets the runs all day requirement)
6. We think Tarau is too good to let slide even if he is not list need number 1 he is a level above Allan Lindsay etc.

Seems we are prioritising athleticism specifically running capacity in our draft order

Based on that I think it is either Travaglia & Tarau as predicted or Draper and Traviglia if the Crows go with Langford if the Tigers choose Allan at 6 I still think there is a chance we stick with Travaglia and Tarau and pass on Smillie
I was thinking the same on some of these. I think you’re spot on, even though specific whispers themselves haven’t been raised

Gettable podcast in recent weeks pretty sure. I’ll have to listen back and pinpoint the exact episode and time.
