Wrapped to get the Viking. Looks like he needs a lot of physical development but he only turned 18 a few days ago and he hasn't been in an academy for years like many draftees these days.
He has both the flying leap like Roo and the two leg Membrey spring. He’ll be hard to beat purely on that athleticism alone. If he has some swagger then we could be in business

Anyway I really think some are wallowing in their own pity over last night's selections and I agree many are underrating the impact Macrae will have in the midfield.
Is Macrae a sugar hit or long term player helping develop youngsters?
I'd like to think it's the latter but we have had history doing the former

Two things can be true at once

1) Happy with two high-ceiling draftees that were best available
2) Concerned that another draft and trade period has gone by and we didn’t address our list need with a bluechip high ceiling long-term midfield prospect

This ‘dual-narrative’ stuff has to have an end point, we must be chips in for one of Finn Callaghan, LDU or Brayshaw next year I hope we get one at least but it’s going to be tough.

Unless we have a secret to seal the deal that no one has ‘cotton on’ to yet like Ross was alluding to.

They said "SOS failed"

How do you know he failed? Failed to get what you want sure but to label the draft a failure is daft imo.
Perfectly acceptable view point right now.

Mission on Monday saying we want mids.

Steele pre draft last night saying he wants a mid next to him next year.

We didn’t do that.

Nothing to do with the players selected. Face value the club was clear this week alone what it wanted.

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to ask the question of sos and gubby

We stated that we needed elite young mids, we appreciate that none were available at our selection and you went best available. What was done to improve this position, and what will be done to address it in the future?

otherwise we’re going to end up reverse north Melbourne..

Failed to land a genuine mid in the draft which the club has publicly slated as a priority all season. Hard to argue with.

Failed at the draft? We won’t know for 5 years.
The cost to go up to those picks would have been 7, F1 and F2. So we can't sit here laughing at North and also say we should have done that

We haven’t drafted a genuine mid in the first round since Luke Dunstan.

What’s the thought on our first pick tomorrow all?

Draft for talent, trade to fill needs.
I’m not wanting to argue, but I’d just say that strategy hasn’t worked for us at all. We don’t seem to be able to trade in top line mids, potentially Steele aside. And I can’t see it changing.

He’s not really an expert anymore. He just has good contacts to get told what the clubs are going to do. I’m surprised the AFL allow it given it takes all the mystique out of the evening.
He had an ear piece on all night getting fed info.

They love it.

If we land LDU. Absolutely happy days. They have played it perfect.

But it’s likely we don’t and I’m not sure how we fill that void

How do you get a genuine gun mid when all the genuine gun mids are off the table? In the long term we have to either come close to last on the ladder, or sacrifice talent in order to get in the top 5 or 6 picks. In the circumstances I think best available was the correct way to go.

No one is labelling those picks as failures ffs

People are lamenting the fact we didn’t land blue chip midfielders with 2 top 10 picks.
That is understood, however there were 6 recognised top mids that you could throw a blanket over.
They were all gone by our first pick.
It has been reported that we offered pick 7 and F1 for 2 to North but they obviously wanted to burn their F1 for pick 27 instead .
How do you deal with abject morons like that?
Seems as though there were no other takers below us, and as it turns out nobody wanted 8 for two mid teen picks.
Nobody was trading picks and has been reported that North offered every team from us at pick 8 onwards until Richmond fell over laughing at the end of round 1.

So while it is understandable to lament, the frustration from others with this is that you might as well complain we didn't get Harley Reid and Zac Butters in last night's draft.
You can't draft what isn't there.

Select mids when available in the super even super draft with 20 to 25 mids available in the first 30 picks, I suppose.
So any mid, just as long they have been labelled a mid. Maybe we should have redrafted Seb, he was a pure mid, what's Armo doing nowadays?
I would have taken Reid but others tell me he is slow, small ( I think about the third smallest in the draft and the second smallest mid after Ashcroft) and doesn't fit our profile.
You can't draft what is not there.
I would have been perfectly happy to trade 7 and F1 for 2 but you can't reason with desperate morons like North.

I hope our new draftees can develop into a big positive for us, but it's a shame we can't seem to snag the Sam Lalor type of young bull inside player which we have needed for years.

Would you be ok being in Richmond's spot in order to get that sort of player?

We supposedly asked about trading up and the cost was too high.

You get the top shelf mids one of four ways:

Finish near the bottom
Father Son/NGA
Free Agency/Trade
Development

Nobody wants to have a two win season to achieve #1. We are shit out of luck on #2. We are trying our hand at #3.

The biggest flaw at the Saints for over a decade has been #4.

Get that right and then #2 and #3 become the leapfrog moments to a premiership.

I think North's actions last night were them preparing for losing LDU. Drafting another mid very high up is an indictor, but I thought their trade of their future first was really telling. People might think it's mad to trade out what could be a Top Five pick, but if you're pretty sure that it's going to get replaced by a band one compensation, you may as well make that move

People will rightfully feel like and I put myself in this group.

That sometimes you need to burn a little draft collateral and force the move up.

I personally wasn’t against 7+F1 and something else small to get a mid we rated.

We didn’t and it’s in the past now.

But if we get put to the sword in the midfield on the regular again next year it will be hard to justify the lack of appetite in trade or draft to fill the need.

I think Macrae improves us. But I also think he might be coming to the end of his powers as opposed to the belief that he had a down year because the dogs mismanaged him.

Either way, it’s a lot of expectation now on Pou Windy Henry Garcia Clark to make sure they step up consistently and a few levels above what we saw across all of 2024.
