lol espn rated the bombers draft an A- and ours a B…

Who cares. The best hauls often result in FA. The Clark Coffied draft looked awesome at the time. We now just have to wait and hope. To me it looks like a good pool of talent and Dalrymple seems to do well digging around the fringes.

I reckon what would have been interesting is if Smillie had gotten through and whether we'd have taken him. Seems we were absolutely desperate for Travaglia.

Didn't get to watch last night but it's way more interesting, so.many players rated differently. It's really where the recruiters earn their money. Hopefully Rymp unearthed some gold last night.

Honestly Travaglia just looks a Ross Lyon type. Runs, defends, attacks when he gets the opportunity and has a bit of bravery. Smilie looked so lazy in the champs that he set off warning bells. Lyon would hate that.

To me Travaglia and Tauru have the most upside because as top 10 picks they'll get every opportunity to prove themselves. Every other player we took is going to have to make the most of every opportunity just to get a foot in. Garcia is the model citizen for how you need to train and prepare and that's off the back of guys like Byrnes and Windy who look like they are aware that nothing is going to be given to them. They have to earn it all.
To me this is so spot on.

We have young players in Keeler, Hastie, Collard, Garcia, Arie fighting for a spot joined by six new you kids with tremendous upside.
Thats 11 fair quality kids fighting for what? 6 spots going forward.

Then there are the 'established' players like Jones and Howard (Webster) and a couple of others on 1 year contracts, knowing the AFL dream is over this year if they don't perform at the highest of levels.

This is a ruthless business and the club is now run by ruthless people. The tone was set by Bassatt at the top by sacking Ratten, then replacing Lethlean, and Finnis, and then appointing in recruiting SoS, Misson, and Dalrymple.

This is a culture rarely seen before at the Saints, not even in Lyons first rodeo, the admin was a bit of a shambles, the facilities a disaster and the playing list fairly set.

Really now it is perform or you will be out. The list is well balanced, relatively young and the structure is full on competitiveness.

A lot to like, I think.

ADRIAN COLE

Key defender, Sandringham Dragons, 194cm
Surprisingly, no club bidded on the lockdown key defender in the national drqaft and the Saints said they “hope he gets a start” in the rookie draft. The Saints can pre-list him as a Category B rookie, and Cole’s camp believe it is unlikely he becomes a St Kilda player. Collingwood and Sydney were among the clubs to show interest in the lead-up to the draft.

"Finished" - that's just bulls***. If he was finished, he would have been delisted and paid out. We have shedloads of cap so paying him out now is not an issue.

But what's happened is that he and the club still think there's a chance he can make it so so he has been given the promise that we will re-rookie him if he can prove his fitness.

And anyway I wouldn't want to bin an even half fit Crouch in favour of some unknown rookie.

If we pay him out in full it will cost us somewhere around 700k.

If we rookie list him, and then he retires, the AFL cover half.

That's approx 350k we can bring forward to guys like King, Snags, Pou, Nas etc which then means we have that little bit more to spend on a potential LDU/Brayshaw/Callaghan offer.

They’re there to pump the draft, anyone who takes a lot of picks “wins” the draft to them. We did well I think, but West Coast make a strong case for better value for money with Allan @ 16, Shanahan @ 30 (!) and Gross @ 46.

Shanahan and Dodson the 2 biggest sliders you’d think, rucks always a big unknown though.

Yeah the Eagles did really well TBH.

Landing Allan makes the pick 3 trade a little better and I actually really rate Owies. They could have got him cheaper but the deal was done.

All 3 of Baker, Owies and Allan will impact next year.

Shanahan can play either end but probably ends up as the R/F foil for Oscar & Waterman.

And Gross will put a heap of pressure on their 2nd-4th year players to step up. McQualter will love him I rekon.

Really happy for Mini. Hope he does well over there.

Edit: Just realized the Eagles now have Bo ALLAN & Oscar ALLEN

I expect Trav & Box to play plenty of games in 2025.

Rekon they will be the Wilson/Garcia type stories for us.

If he doesn’t get picked up by any AFL club I hope they invite him to play for Sandy

I agree in principle but just can't see the sense in it if his knee is cooked. Macrae has his spot now and we really need to develop a future set up. Giving six games to Crouch over Garcia seems pointless. I'd rather the romance of Peckett even if he doesn't make it it's a positive move forward.
100% agree with this, a midfield of having both McCrae and Crouch running around in it does nothing to help win our next premiership. I'm a big Crouch fan but unfortunately, his knee is cooked and we'll be lucky to get him at 70% of his best.

Can we get Boxshall living with Mason Wood?

Could be a perfect understudy with those combine results.

Get him running up and down the wing, attending stoppages, dropping back in defence when Taurus pushes forward or swing forward to free up Pou/Owens on ball.

I claimed Wilkie way back when. That was a winner. Then I jumped on Highmore. Oops.

Gonna pick Boxshall from this lot I rekon. He was the player I wanted with our first pick last night so I'll stick with him.

Could be anything.

One thing that I feel confident about for the first time in a long time, is that the players we drafted will be given every opportunity to succeed.

It's hard to know how much our previous drafting was the cause of our problems or whether someone like Billings would have turned into an elite player in a better system like Geelongs.

Right now I don't know how guys like Garcia and Schoenmaker fit into our side next year, let alone all the new guys. But RL has shown a willingness to throw youngsters in the deep end this time around so I'm sure we'll see a lot of youth next season.

Yeesh, that's a bit awkward that we've reneged on our Sandringham draft commitment :grimacing: I know we didn't have any great options but we made the promise
Especially if we had said that one of the academy or FS players would count.

Jeez, we spent a long time talking about those 3 just to end up passing on them all.
