Yes true, my point I suppose is we wont know who 'won' what for a few years. I agree we did go well in our picks and using an F2 for Dodson and Said was pretty savvy.

I take your point with delistings. Take it a bit further, never seen so many one year contracts offered and taken this year. means they will be ruthless again this year end and basically it is a culture of survival of the fittest.

Ruthless competitiveness is a must if we want to challenge.
Spot on - & that’s exactly what RTB has brought back to the Saints - he has a more cuddly persona he plays up to - but behind the scenes he is ruthless and driven - love it!

Personally I'm happy with all of our picks aside from 32 for Barrat. Nothing against him, I just thought after our first two picks, we had different areas of need. Obviously a mid would have been nice, but I think Jack Whitlock would have made more sense since we lack height.

Drafting is basically just gambling, so at the end of the day it doesn't really matter, just on paper it's a little confusing.

If we pay him out in full it will cost us somewhere around 700k.

If we rookie list him, and then he retires, the AFL cover half.

That's approx 350k we can bring forward to guys like King, Snags, Pou, Nas etc which then means we have that little bit more to spend on a potential LDU/Brayshaw/Callaghan offer.
Nah not quite right.

We can only count half the "rookie" salary rate not his contracted salary rate so we save about $65K not $350K.

Too much of a rort if clubs could do it the way you've suggested.

I think Boyd was Plan B if we didn't pick up a ruck in the draft. A decent Campbell replacement.

With picking up Dodson that's ships most likely sailed.

Seems a lot of faith in Heath if Ro goes down. But maybe it’d be the making of the man
Aside from a lack of list spots now available for a Boyd type ruck, it would be difficult to play 3 rucks at Sandy, especially when the 2 youngest ones need lots of on ball development.

Our recruiters love him. Hard as a rock old fashioned footballer. Think he will surprise a lot of people.

When Heath was the only ruck at Sandy last year he was dominant. I still believe he has a big future.
If some of these other state league rucks were as good as him supporters would be demanding we draft them.
Big pre season for the Moose this one.

I'm repeating myself but this "who won the draft" BS is nonsense when viewed in isolation. You need to compare a clubs list before the trade period to how it stands after the draft period.

Richmond coughing up stars in Bolton, Baker, Rioli and Graham and getting in a raft of draft picks meant they were always going to dominate the draft section. Will the influx of young talent make up for the player loss plus Dusty and Grimes retirement? Who knows?

Geelong trading for Smith and the Pies for Houston burnt their draft hand. So how could they "win" the draft period?

Of our delistings only Membrey is a certain starter elsewhere. Maybe Paton.
So other than those two our only significant loss was Battle.

The flip side being we've recruited MacRae and Carrol and 6 quality kids.

Scene: Cabin in the woods, exterior. We see the broad back and shoulders of an unidentified man in his 40s, wearing a weathered flannel shirt, rough Levi jeans. Back turned to the camera, he chops large logs of wood with a determined masculinity. With each efficient tump, the tension rises

Cut to: Wheels on gravel, a indistinct government car pulls up the rural drive. Stops. Shinny black boots crunch, the sound of the forest seems to go silent, waiting.

Cut back to the man: he paused his wood cutting mid swing

Rugged Man (without turning): How did you find me?

Camera cuts to an older man, portly, a wry smile flushes his cheeks

Older Man: We have our ways. But I have to give it to you, you didn't make it easy for us. I assume you know why we're here

Rugged Man: I'm retired, god damn it. Can't you just let me die in peace?

Older Man: I was retired once too. But it never really sat with me. So what do you say, Zac? Are you ready to get to work on our unfinished business?

Smash cut to the rugged man's face. We see the grizzled, bearded face of Zac Dawson. His eyes are bloodshot but determined. His brow furrowed but set. His blistered hands grip the handle of his axe as music swells

Zac Dawson: You're goddamn right I am

Roll Title: The Last Defender

Its also just pure dumb luck that they self destructed in a very very strong draft year.

Then again we thought it was strong when we were drafting the likes of Goddard.

I always thought that Dawson was the Jar Jar Binks of the AFL world. Can't picture him with the grizzled bearded face and determined eyes.
