Brad Crouch played 65 games in 3 years for us. I reckon he was unlucky not to make the AA squad in 2023.

In 2024 he played only one game, we all know that. But that game was only 63% game time. That was his least time on ground in a game for his entire Saints 'career'.

Expensive game for someone who was absolutely up against it with his dodgy knee in the preseason before getting that one game.
He bluffed his way into that game. He knew he only need one game to trigger that extension. Who could blame him

I am not 100% certain on this but doesn't the Irish bloke that played for Collingwood a few years back have some sort of academy for the Irish talent path to AFL
I thought Tadgh Kennelly had done something in this regard a few years ago, working alongside the AFL, but then read earlier this year that all the AFL talent pathways had been shut down in Ireland.
I think Tuohy, is pretty keen to get something happening again though.

Interesting in examining our draftees this year:

Travaglia; 189cm, strong overhead, line beaker, competitive, endurance, interceptor

Tauru : 193cm, strong overhead, versatile, competitive, athletic, interceptor

Barrat; 194cm, strong overhead, versatile, competitive, athletic, interceptor

Boxshall; 188cm, strong overhead, competitive, quick, good hands, aggressive

Dodson : 203cm, strong overhead, mobile, competitive, athletic, endurance

Said ; 180cm, speed, endurance, elite kick.

They share similar characteristics. Tall (with the exception of Said), versatile, good overhead, competitive, athletic and read the play well.

Lyon wants us to be big, quick, skilful and mean. He wants players who can read the play, want to win, and who can perform multiple roles.

Complete flexibility. Covering all bases.
How about kicking accuracy, kicking skills, ?

The weirdest thing is that he played in round two, but for Sandy. Where he further injured his knee and was then out of action for about 10 weeks. Very strange decision making by the Saints. I didn't mind them trying to pick him in round 1 b/c of his importance to the side - mistakes like that happen. But playing him at Sandy when he was clearly hampered was just very odd.

I thought we sent him back to the VFL to gain fitness since we played him with no preseason due to lack of availability and then he re-injured/re-aggravated during that game.

Whats really curious is how well paid AFL reporters don't even understand the basics of the competition.

If Crouch retired or was retired prior to the 31st of October his his payout would be part of last years salary cap.

Being re-rookied anytime after the 1st November means his payout is part of this years salary cap.

That reminds me of this great Chapelle bit about Trump, and just like him, I have to admit "I didn't know that shit either"

By my count, Crouch's retirement means we've lost 923 games of experience and gained 270 (basically Jack Macrae).

I remember before the 2024 season Ross said that we'd be less able to withstand injuries in 2024 because we'd let go of a lot of experience and depth (Billings, Coffield, Gresh, Bytel, McKenzie, Highmore). Then I remember after the round 2 game against Collingwood we had to replace three players and only had two players with AFL experience to bring in (not counting Tom Campbell).

We have cleaned out a lot of experience and depth over the last two years. I think our best 22 - maybe even our best 25 - is top 8 worthy, but if we have to regularly rely on too many beyond that, we're not in the frame.

Crouch will be delisted next week with the SANFL ruck Boyd replacing him, deal was done last week.

See you all next year.
There’s been a few posts that potted me after this post that have since been deleted, but it’s all good! Boyd is his replacement, will start training immediately, if he hasn’t already.

Have a great summer everyone, and stay safe.

We didn’t really have Seb or Brad for much of this year anyway so their loss on the track and on game day won’t really be felt

Hawks had a good injury run and only just missed going super deep. If you have 25 good players and a bit of luck you can still push up. Sydney played a pretty young and average list all the way to a GF.

A grade- Nas, Sinclair, Steele, Macrae, King, Marshall, Wilkie.

B grade or rising- Phillipou, Henry, Snags, Hill, Wilson, Owens, Butler, Wood, Webster.

C grade- Windhager and Dow (possible risers injury free), Clark, Jones, Byrnes, Caminiti, Sharman, Stocker, Howard, Cordy, Carroll.

Could be anythings- Shoenmaker, Keeler, Moose, Garcia, Dodson, Tauru, Travaglia, Hastie, Boxshall, Barrat, Collard, McLennan, O'Connell.

Should be able to put together a decent side.

Crouch will be picked up in the rookie draft then retire the next day, something to do with the payout

Looking at that 2009 GF team and where we were lacking stands out like bull testicles

Jones / McQualter as our 2 forward flankers

Where were our 3rd tall marking goalkickers .... our Steven Johnson / our Aaron Hamill / our Ryan O'Keefe?

We had one.

His name was Jimmy Gwilt and for the first half of 2009 he was ****ing awesome as a hit up forward option. Didn't kick a heap of goals but did the job of pulling a defender away from the dangerous space.

I'll always argue that he should have played the 09 GF over Dempster but Ross went with what he knew from Sydney.

Sounds like it’s on the cards.

If we continue to play Roma as the sole ruck, how will we fit all 3 rucks in the VFL (or 4 if you count Keeler): Boyd, Heath, Young basketball recruit from SA can’t remember his name?

Boyd + Dodson split the ruck time
Heath spends a year playing mostly forward, to develop that aspect of his game.
Keeler goes to CHB where he spent a portion of 2024

Keeler might be that Paddy Ryder/Jake Carlisle 'play anywhere' type.

Crouch continues a very bad trend of St Kilda players being forced into retirement before their time.

Armitage, J Steven, K Stevens, Roberton, Carlisle, even Ross. I'm probably forgetting a few. When you're losing key players at the age of 30 instead of 33 it leaves a massive hole in the list that is not easily replaced by an extra 18 year old rookie.
