If both those listed as tests come up (not expecting Rioli too), that leaves an injury list of three and only one who’d be a walk-up start in the 23. There really are no excuses anymore, at any level.
There should never have been excuses. Every club has injuries, us fewer than most. Our list depth IS an issue though whatever some on here think. Look at some of the AFL performances of Collingwood’s fringe players in recent weeks, and regular outputs at VFL level for most of the other sides going round. We just don’t have anyone outside of our AFL 23 applying any selection pressure this year.

So true, Port Magpies is a total shambles, sooner we are out of the sanfl the better.

We had 15 AFL listed players, many of them experienced, turn out against Sturt a fortnight ago and couldn’t manage a goal in the first half.

Doesn’t exactly speak glowingly of the depth on our list does it 😵‍💫

There's 18 players on the field at any given time. You can have 5-6 very capable AFL footballers in your team but if the rest of the team consists of 18-20 year olds who were fourth round or rookie picks and literal amateur league footballers you're still going to be up against it.

Also, nobody ever said our depth was fantastic, it's just unremarkable relative to the rest of the comp. Most actual AFL teams have half a dozen spuds turn out every week, nobody really has actual quality depth.

The talk of everything will be better 'once we leave SANFL' is delusional. So what if next year our reserves team plays a Richmond reserves team (like this year) where because of injuries they only had 6 available AFL list players in it. How will playing a weak as pizz side help development?
And of course we will have to say goodbye to the Port Magpies ... forever.

It might not be better, but being able to have some semi professional top up players on the reserves list will give the AFL listed players greater exposure to playing the roles they are selected to play in their position.

Outside of the 23 who lined up against Carlton, the following are AFL capable:
1. Rozee
2. SPP
3. Rioli
4. Sinn
5. Williams
6. Visentini
7. Sweet
8. Lord
9. McKenzie
10. Clurey

Of those, Visentini and Sweet would hardly ever be picked at the same time as Soldo.
Clurey and possibly Williams are not in good enough form and may not be again in 2024 to put pressure on our selected 23.
SPP is out for the year.

That leaves us to select from the 23 against Carlton plus Rozee, Rioli, McKenzie, Sinn and Lord (i.e., 28) for the rest of the year. We need more applying selection pressure to keep the likes of Burton, McEntee, Evans, Jones and Bergman either out of the side or lifting their games. It's vital that Anastosopoulos and Lorenz keep pressing and get rewarded if their SANFL form is good enough. Similarly, it would be a huge but unexpected bonus if Jackson can find his feet once he's back playing.

With a small injury list it is time to try other forward setups. Charlie is near the end. Have him on light duties for few weeks his next game not till mid July in the SANFL. Giving Lord an extended shot in AFL team. Dixon not to be guaranteed AFL games unless of injury or poor form.

He's at the end.
How many people would be comfortable with him suiting up for a big final and confident he wouldn't blow up by half time?

So you pick ONE GAME with a hypothetical situation where only 6 players are available, as your empirical evidence that leaving the SANFL will not be better for the club?
God help us!

It's not just one week. It's more the norm at this time of the season. My point is that our seconds team will be going to weaker comp. What is the point? The cost factor would be significant.

We've invested heavily in speculative draft picks, and are hoping to develop them. They will struggle if they aren't supported by quality. Some squad's get a heap of early draft picks or are able to maintain that quality through aging players maintaining depth, but we have been cutting too hard, killing that supportive depth and really as a club we are now reliant on getting to another league and bringing in that support in the form of more senior top ups.

True, but mate, the SANFL is declining, and once Port & the Crows leave, it will be on life support! Then additionally, you are talking about a Port second team now that is hog tied now by the onerous rules. Stay as we are, and we are doomed. (Cue dead magpie emoji)

Under a national seconds comp, it all changes. Sponsorship will improve because of national exposure, we can pay more to get better top-up players. It has to improve our young player development. There is a reason why our "fringe" players are sub-standard to the Vic sides.

If done well, it will benefit both SA sides hugely.

The key to both SA based AFL clubs being competitive in the sanfl is obviously having an even playing field for top up players, as the current situation where every week it's usually the 6-8 blokes who aren't good enough to get a game with most other club's magoos who are getting regularly exposed.

The days of a kid playing for the club he may have grown up loving for $400 a game when a glenelg, nord, sturt or any other club can offer him 4x that are long gone as well, or in the case where even when either of the two can unearth a diamond in the rough, unless they draft him he is usually goneski after no more than one season.

Fixing that uneven playing field for top up players in the sanfl is probably never going to happen but even if an extended vfl is a weaker comp at least the rules would be the same for list management for all clubs, which has to be better than being a cash cow in a comp that is exploiting the crap out of us.

Very confident Lord comes in with one more sanfl game. They've said that's the timeline for his return so it sounds like Dixon is on borrowed time if he's lining up this week.

Most importantly we need to be able to select mature top ups who can act as on field development coaches for our young AFL listed players.

Not young ammo players.

Rozee back for the AFL side. Rioli didn't come up.

Ryan Burton out with bone bruising in his foot.

For the SANFL side: Jackson returns, McKenzie did his hamstring. Carter and Aldridge fit. No Nick Moore.

Rest in pieces McKenzie.

Small forward Willie Rioli will be tested this week to determine his fitness for Saturday's game against Brisbane.

Rioli missed matches against Carlton and GWS after suffering a calf strain during the North Melbourne game, but has been making positive progress.

Ryan Burton has bone bruising to his foot and will continue to be assessed this week, while Trent McKenzie sustained a hamstring strain at training and is set to miss up to three weeks.

First-year player Lachie Charleson will be available this weekend after recovering from a knee injury, while Josh Sinn will be assessed for a possible return from a fractured collarbone.

Injury update
Josh Sinn (collarbone) - test
Willie Rioli (calf) - test
Trent McKenzie (hamstring) - 2-3 weeks
Ryan Burton (foot) - TBC
Sam Powell-Pepper (knee) - season

I thought Lachie was still a couple of weeks away, so that's a good turnaround. Sinn too, although I would be cautious with a broken collarbone.
