Missed an opportunity here I feel, would have been a good pick up for our SANFL team as try before you buy opportunity instead of the McAndrew guy looking to the future. Flynn will play for the GWV Rebels as a 19 year old when not required for Port Melbourne VFL.

Flynn Penry, Port Melbourne

From Cobden Bombers, the 201cm ruckman has spent the past two years with the GWV Rebels, in 2024 playing a match for Vic Country at the national Under 18 championships. Port called him a “super competitive athlete with a strong mark’’.
Thats your non-biased opinion of course ??

Your point exactly?

We desperately need a young developing ruckman and Flynn fits the bill ideally as a try before you buy opportunity.

Our SANFL team should be about development not Premierships.

Doesn't look like any other teams agree with you either.

We do need a development ruck, no question.... but maybe this kids isnt it ??

What the hell are you on about?

He's already just been recruited by Port Melbourne VFL as a 19 year old while still on GWV Rebels list for 2025.

No good reason reason why he couldn't have been enticed to have a crack at SANFL with the Crows with a view to maybe an AFL opportunity. Very similar pathway to the AFL of former Rebels rucks Rowan Marshall and Lloyd Meek, No doubt you've never watched the lad play.

Ahh youve gone with that line. A standalone VFL club picked him up, good for him.

I'll leave it here, youve got nothing in your locker.

And you've got plenty in your locker....crap that is!!!!

I guess you'd have said the same about Rowan Marshall and Lloyd Meek when they went undrafted as 18 year olds...

For every one of them, theres a Dan Gorringe.

Everyone here knows you've got a blind spot for your Rebels, there's no use even discussing things further.

Says the guy that's not even seen him play.

Seems harsh. Plenty of decent rucks don't get recruited at this age because clubs are already committed to other developing rucks. Doesn't mean they are crap.

Exactly especially given Flynn Penry didn't resume playing until the latter half of the season due to injury otherwise I'd be very confident he'd have been Vic Country's lead ruck at the Carnival. Only resumed a couple of weeks before the Nationals so was lacking fitness but still played very managed minutes in the last game of the Nationals, after the Nationals he was very good for the Rebels and ultimately one of the main reasons they came from nowhere (widcard round) to play off in the Grand Final against the stacked Sandringham Dragons team.

Here's some footage of Flynn from the U17's Futures game Grand Final Day in 2023 where he was the dominant ruck on the ground. The big redhead #28

As soon as Luke Jackson was traded to FREO …. i said we should have chased Meek

Opportunity lost …….will be interesting to see if Reidy gets a go this year

Actually Flynn Penry at the same age is a very similar prospect physically to Lloyd Meek moreso than Rowan Marshall given both were pure rucks with all round good skills especially being reasonably good kicks for big lads, Rowan Marshall certainly showed ruck potential too but he also played some real good footy as a KPP both forward and back.

Either way IMO we should always have 3 rucks on our list, a lead ruck, a decent back upand a young development ruck. The young development ruck list spot basically on a year to year basis to see what they've got, if not showing enough move them on and get another young development ruck in to replace them. It's the only way we'll get an above average ruck on the cheap,

Given this is a finals or bust year for a few employees, they'd clearly prefer the guy with 2 AFL preseasons under the belt even if the ceiling is very low.
