Of course, you continue to ignore the key factor - we were able to guarantee Rankine a position in our best 22 from the day he walked into the club. We can't make that same guarantee to Luko, while Tex remains on the list.

Why do you continue to ignore this crucial factor?

I get the pull of home, but the inability to guarantee him a spot in our best 22 is far more critical than a feel good factor like "being back in his home state". AFL players have a finite shelf life, and no AFL footballer is going to willingly put his career on hold for 12 months in his prime, just to play in his home state.
Ignore what? I said Lukosius probably see a better future here even with Walker on the list for his final year as he see the same situation as most of us with Hawkins who was managed this year and eventually had to retire. He might also have other clubs chasing them but want to return home so the only other option is Port Power who either don't have interest or he doesn't want to be traded to them.

I'm not sure you've ever seen a game of football by either of these players.

Tex and Lukosius are not the same player at all.

15 goals a year more each? Holy exaggeration, Batman!
Once or twice a game getting delivery from Luko rather than Laird or Murphy? Absolutely they could. Just look at the kick from Fog to Rachelle last week, without that he has 1 goal instead of 2.

People massively over rate key forwards, in most cases they just finish off good work from the team. Fog only averages 1.5 goals a game, deliver the ball to him better and absolutely he could average 2 per game.

** I was hoping the beard stays. Looks like a beast

Riley Thilthorpe prepares to shave beard for charity, weighs in on Crows’ forward mix

With Taylor Walker poised to play on in 2025, Adelaide’s forward line is shaping up to be one of the AFL’s most potent. Riley Thilthorpe gives MATT TURNER his take on the Crows attack — and a cause close to his heart.

Adelaide forward Riley Thilthorpe will shave off the beard that has become something of a personal good-luck charm to raise money for a cause close to his heart.
Thilthorpe grew his facial hair while sidelined for four months with a torn meniscus in his knee and changed plans to remove it after he kicked two goals in his AFL return last month.
The 22-year-old has followed that comeback performance with at least two majors in every game for a tally of 11.2 from his five matches.
Thilthorpe told this masthead growing the beard became a passive hobby while he did not have much to do, but he was pretty keen now to cut it off.
“It was meant to go after my first game,” Thilthorpe said.
“Mum was a big believer (and) a lot of people in my family told me to keep it a bit longer after my first game.

“It’ll go in the next couple of weeks and I’ll try to raise some money.
“My aunty died of breast cancer seven or eight years ago, so it’s something that’s pretty close to me.
“That’s what it’ll be going to.”
Thilthorpe was loving being back playing after so long on the sidelines.
He described himself as a terrible supporter.
“We obviously didn’t start (the year) the way we wanted (0-4) so it was pretty tough to watch because I couldn’t really impact anything,” said Thilthorpe, who put on about 4kg of muscle while out of the team.
“It was a long four months.

“Sitting out for a while, you realise how much you miss it.
“The stuff I miss the most is being with the boys those 15 minutes after a win, coming in after a goal and talking.
“The crowd make it unbelievable — we’ve got the best fans in the league.”
Since round 18, Adelaide has booted more goals when it has kicked to Thilthorpe inside 50 than any other target at any club has across the competition.
He is also No. 6 in the AFL for the team retaining the ball and seventh for the side scoring when he is targeted inside 50.
In-form Crows forward Darcy Fogarty ranks fourth (team goal), seventh (team retention) and second (team scoring) in the league in those statistics during the same period.

The duo are also among the top-10 for two other inside 50 metrics since round 18: mark win rate and one-on-one win rate.
Thilthorpe said Fogarty, who kicked an equal career-high five goals in his 100th game on Saturday night, had taken a massive step this year since joining the leadership group.
“He’s a lot more vocal with a lot more demand from us,” he said.
“He speaks up a lot more in meetings and he knows what he’s talking about so when he talks we all listen.
“With Tex going down and having some younger boys playing, he really stepped up.”

Thilthorpe believed Adelaide could return to being one of the league’s highest scoring teams next season, calling its forward line “elite”.

The Crows averaged an AFL-best 95.3 points per game in 2023, despite finishing 13th on the ladder.
They were the 13th-highest scoring side (83.7 points per game) so far this year.
With Taylor Walker likely to play on next season, Thilthorpe and Fogarty’s improvement could lead to Adelaide having one of the best three-prong tall forward trios in the league.
“I think we work really well together so it’s exciting,” he said.

On what basis do you think Luko is worth 2x 2nd round picks?

He's a flaky, soft, player who is on the outer with his current coach, and GC need to get rid of his salary for other inbound trades. I don't see any reason why he should cost us more than 1x 2nd round pick, and I'd be pushing hard for a Bowes-like trade if we agree to take his whole salary off their hands.
If the suns are truly desperate to offload him for salary reasons that changes his price but I’ve yet to see anything concrete suggesting that. He’s got glaring weaknesses but undeniably one of the best kicks in the game. It was only one season ago he showed he could score 39 goals whilst still being “flaky” and “soft”.

Suns do not value picks the same as other teams. They’re in such need of senior players they’d rather retain a bloke talented enough to walk into a number of teams (highlighted by interest from a number of Vic teams), even if it’s as depth, than throw him away for unders and start developing yet another kid at the draft. That, plus his contract, plus interest from a number of other clubs, means we’re paying more than one 2nd round pick.

Agree his kicking is elite.

Interest from other clubs is largely irrelevant if he nominates Adelaide. Players need to agree to any trade, which ties the hands of the trading club.

If GC are stupid enough to set an unrealistically high price, then we just walk away - and they're stuck with paying $1M to a disgruntled player who doesn't want to be there. They need to get his contract off the books in order to bring in other players they're targeting, so this should go through with a minimum of fuss.

It should be a single 2nd round pick, done & dusted fairly easily.

my fear is ONE second rounder may not be quite enough (I havent heard anthing credible about this 1m.year for both remaining years on contract but perhaps its true)

GC will ask for first round pick swaps also I imagine (esp with Lombard a quite likely top 10 pick) and it was one thing Crows moving from 4->6 but GC beating Dons on the weekend now sees them with pick 7. Once they likely win both final 2 games (Dees at home and Tigers away) and teams sitting 10th and 11th likely lose one or both remaining games, GC could end up 10th on the ladder (pick 9 before distortions of FS Ashcroft and possible FA compo to Saints). Now I am not doing the deal if we lose pick 4 for pick 9

I would be pissed if we gave up pick 30 for him.
He's worth much more than that. Pick 30 is speculative at best. Keane has shown he can play at the level and can be a very good player. He's not perfect, but he's worth a lot more than 30.
Fair enough.

I just can't imagine a club paying much more than that for him, but you're right that we don't have to sell either.

Only in Vader World.

Luko walks into our best 22 wherever he plays.

I think it makes it messy. Given the draft Captial and salary Luko should be coming to complete the forward line.

I know many say it can work but I doubt all four could play in the same forward line. The run would hurt us from defence.

I'd be interested to know what Nicks said to Luko. I doubt he said come to us and in 12 months we will have set up our future forward line.

If we see Luko as a forward then it has to be from next year.

I know the money is appealling and no doubt Tex would kick goals next year but he needs to call time. It's the best thing that can happen to the group in terms of new leaders and culture.

... and we're back where we started again.

Yes, injuries happen. You make contingency plans in case they happen. You don't go into a season with a contingency plan as your Plan A, unless you have a pre-existing long-term injury.

What happens if Fog/TT/Tex don't have a long-term injury? Luko ends up playing the 1/3-1/2 season when we rest Tex. I'm sure he'd be signing on quickly with that prospect in mind!
Christ, stop.

Lukosius isn't a key forward. Walker still playing is an absolute irrelevance.

We can guarantee him a spot in the 22.

This is a nonsense discussion.

I don't think Neal-Bullen or Lukosius are that great, frankly. I see them as take it or leave it - if we can't get a good deal, off to the Power and I won't lose sleep.
I think both would make our best 22 better immediately.

The question with Luko isn’t whether he’s talented enough, he clearly is - it’s moreso if the mix is right

Let’s say Rachele, Keays, Walker, Fog and RT are guaranteed spots in the forward line next year, with Rankine playing as a fwd/mid. There’s one more forward spot available in the 22 - would it be better if it was a skilled, yet slower tall in Luko, or someone smaller but quicker and better defensively? Especially as neither Rash or Keays are super quick

I’d almost be tempted to play Luko on a wing (with bursts fwd), provided one of our three wing rotations has speed/run and carry traits. Then we can move him into the forward line more permanently once Tex retires

Edit: then again, I kinda want Curtin to play that Luko role

For the right price, they are excellent additions. They're both automatic starters, in the right age profile for the group and dramatic improvements on the players they would replace - Murphy, Cook, Jones, McHenry, etc
