If we are willing to offer Gulden a 10 year deal now, can anyone explain why we didn't bid on him at the 2020 draft?

We selected both Cook and Berry before any bid came in for him
Probably because we didn't rate him that highly as a junior - but 4 seasons of AFL has revealed him to be a much better player than we thought he would be back then.

What a stupid question...

It's not like that's a problem with our talent identification or anything

The Milera's - We got the WISH version. A comparison at ANY stage of Wayne Milera vs NWM has poor old Wayne getting destroyed. Unlucky with the injury, but for me, despite what the clanger/turnover stats say, has been woeful in the MANNER and location on the ground in which he's coughed the ball up. Up there with Hinge in terms of being a massive disappointment this season.

Also he went in between McKay and C.Curnow in the draft two Coleman medalist and Carlton knew we wanted McKay so took him first as we wouldn't pick Curnow due to picking his brother and delisting him where he then went and played 150ish games for Carlton

I'm still not sure whether it's talent identification or talent development. One, or both, are definitely broken - I just don't know which.

Both.

We've had enough high end picks who have either not come on after years of 'development' in our system; or been total busts.

Surely there's enough evidence to see that now.

I think it's more likely to be on the development side, given that most of the high picks have gone pretty much where they were expected to in the draft. Our ability to turn talent into muck is a development issue, rather than a talent identification issue.

I'm not saying that there aren't also problems with our talent identification - but I think it's abundantly clear that our talent development is nothing short of horrible.

C'mon. That is obviously untrue, unless you think the same for every professional sport in Australia.
In my opinion....it is. The sanitisation, the manufacturing of results, the unfair bias, the umpiring standards, the poor attempt of technology use, the fixture inequality, the standard of play, the constant rule tinkering....do I have to keep going?

A 10 year deal no doubt on big coin and he still knocked it back..deary me. Are we like the 4.00am at the club when the lights go on...no amount of money is going to tempt
Reckon we overplayed our hand. The young fella wasn't ready for a 10 year commitment anywhere by the sounds. Especially being sentenced to 10 yrs in Adelaide.

Goulden played 18 games in his first season and played well.

If we didn’t rate him that highly clearly we ****ed up again.
He went at 32, nearly all teams got 2 cracks at him though.

Certainly not liking his game tonight.
I haven't seen Petty do a good thing all season. If we pay up big for him this yeah I'm done with the club.
He’s a defender and no way would I be giving up a first rounder when he’s a free agent next year.

The club thought we were closer than we were so giving up a first wouldn’t have been that costly, now it’s a guaranteed top 10, possibly top 6, that has to be used on a mid.

At least you dodged the Petty bullet, that would have been a cooked Petty for Curtin had (or thereabouts had you traded your 1R?). Just out of interest if you did end up with a top 6 pick which mid (FOS, Jagga, Moraes, Smillie etc) would fill the most need?

Asking the wrong bloke, I know nothing about prospective draftees

Just to highlight it again.... If anyone is in ANY doubt whatsoever, the club is where it is because of these 4 years... This is the absolute main reason our list is stuffed. Criminal list management of the highest order.

We could have had 5 or 6 gun players getting into their prime instead we are left with total fringe plodders and a guy who's been an inconsistent tease.

Its crushing.

Why exclude 2015? That’s just as bad

Think this can go here, Ollie Henry on have Rahilly come to Geelong

“We’ve learned so much having James Rahilly back coaching us. Us forwards have been the beneficiary of some of the philosophies he’s brought in,” the 51-gamer said.

“It brings everyone into the game and the way we’re playing and you see some of the talents come out"

Yeah, we need some holes filled on our list but we defintely need better coaches. Our best coach moved and you can see the difference in the players up forward. People can bag players all they want but a decent gameplan with buy in will always make them look better.

Just remember our coaches are

Nicks- I want to be invited to the senior players BBQ
Burns- Schizzer touch
NVB- No rotations unless you're a plodder, still angry at Dawson for going behind his back
Hombsch- I'll give him some free space, our defense has done well given the amount of unpressured delivery the oppo forwards are receiving.

Our issue isn't the players, it's the game plan and coach.

Petty has been s**t as a forward

If he's a crap forward he has much lower value.

Pass
I think at least part of the reason Petty wants out of Melbourne is because he knows he’s a defender. 15-16 out of 18 current clubs wouldn’t chuck him up forward at all IMO. The Dees have Lever, May and co down back. Even WITH Petty playing forward, Ben Brown is getting a regular game for them. Their key forward situation is dire. They would kill to have Fogarty or Thilthorpe.

Petty also knows Borlase and Butts are shizen and shouldn’t be getting regular AFL game time. And so do we. I don’t think we’ve ever intended to bring Petty to the club as a forward. Say it’s as a “swingman” if you like because technically he “can” play up forward if something happens to Fog or Thilthorpe. Realistically, he’d be playing a key defensive role for us when everyone is fit though. Murray and Keane would fight it out for the other key defensive post (as much as I’ve loved the signs from Keane, he’s probably relegated to really solid depth player in this scenario). Fog, Thilthorpe and Welsh are the tall forwards from 2025 onwards, with Rankine, Rachele and co at their feet. Welsh probably doesn’t establish himself in the side until 2026, so Burgess / one of Cook or Gollant can fill that role in 2025 (the other of Cook / Gollant probably doesn’t survive the list cull at the end of this season).

If we were going to play finals in 2024 (spoiler alert: we’re not), I would’ve been fine with trading the resulting pick in the early teens for Petty a year out from Free Agency to really boost things along and ensure no other club came in with a godfather offer in 2025.

Selecting 7 of the 9 of Michalanney - Petty - Ryan - Worrell - Murray - Curtin - Hinge - Keane - Milera to play in defence each week would actually be a pretty nice spot to be in. If Milera can’t fully recover from his latest injury, maybe Nankervis becomes another option back there, rather than exclusively a wingman.

HOWEVER, we all know now that not only are we not playing finals in 2024, we’re finishing firmly in the bottom 5. We also know we have quite literally the worst midfield in the AFL. We know Laird is well past his best. We know Berry probably isn’t going to ever be anything better than a depth player. We know Van Berlo is a shit midfield coach. We know we’ve recruited a black hole in there.

IF we trade our upcoming top 5 pick in the 2024 draft for Petty, ahead of a 2025 season where we are virtually no hope of playing finals again, with the state of this ****ing midfield, and the highly rated crop of mids at the top end of this draft, when we can likely just get Petty at the end of 2025 as a FA anyway, there will unprecedented mutiny.

Draft the best mid this year. Fast track him straight into the side early next year and actually play him in the midfield (novel concept I know). Ditch Laird, Smith, McHenry and Jones permanently from the team. Throw a decent chunk of that Gulden cash at Isaac Cumming (FA) to come and take Jones’ spot on a wing to add some class instantly. Fast track Welsh and get games into him in the 2nd half of 2025. Bring Petty in as a FA at the end of 2025. Ditch Butts and Borlase for good (maybe Butts is retained on the list as depth). Draft another best available midfielder with the top 10 pick we earn by finishing outside the 8 again in 2025 - Sure, trade this pick for an established top end mid if we can, but nobody good is going to want to play here, so yeah, that’s a pipe dream.

Enter 2026 with the following team, and I think we can actually be ok, if we select good midfielders with these upcoming top 5-10 picks and maybe 2-3 of Dowling, Cook, Taylor, Edwards and Ryan really come along as great prospects (let’s be honest at least 2 of them will turn out to not be up to it).

2026 Round 1

B: Michalanney - Petty - Worrell
HB: Ryan - Murray - Curtin
C: Cumming - Dawson - Nankervis
HF: Rachele - Fogarty - Edwards
F: Welsh - Thilthorpe - Rankine
R: ROB - Soligo - 2024 Top 5 pick
Int: 2025 Top 10 pick or a mid acquired via trading this pick - Dowling - one of Hinge/Milera - Cook - One of Pedlar/Taylor

Emg (from): Crouch, Berry, a new ruck who might be able to challenge ROB, Keane, the other of Hinge/Milera, the other of Pedlar/Taylor, Schoenberg

That team has the potential to do things, but the longer we persist with hacks like Jones, McHenry, Hamill, the corpse of Smith, the 2024 version of Laird, Parnell, Murphy, Sholl and probably even Keays, the more we stifle the development of the players who actually have a chance of contributing to success.
