Goulden played 18 games in his first season and played well.

If we didn’t rate him that highly clearly we ****ed up again.

18 with an injury. He has been selected by Sydney for every game he has been fit for.
Let that sink in. Not a single VFL game to build a body of work from when he was drafted.

Must be nice

He would have toiled for at least 10 games in the SANFL with us, then if we picked him would have played him half forward then subbed him out after 3 quarters then dropped him for next week.

Yep... just like we did with Max Michalanney & Jake Soligo.

I'm sorry but we treated Max and Jake very differently. Don't claim they are in the same boat.

23% of all available games Soligo has either played SANFL or has been subbed (on or off)

Gulden has never played VFL and has never been sub

Max is a defender and has been played as such, don’t try and tell me we play mids from the start in the midfield

We play the kids we identify as being top end talent immediately. Admittedly, some of them are played out of position.

Having said that, Soligo has not spent any time playing as a forward or defender.

He went at 32, nearly all teams got 2 cracks at him though.
He was an Academy pick ....a lot of times those picks slide as a consequence .....I wouldn't read too much into the number

Like Jamara, Ethan Read, Tom green, Jake rogers or Jed Walter? 😂

Was Daicos the 4th best pick in his Draft .....Tom Green was pick #10 ...is he the 10th best in his draft ?

Being revisionary .....well, anyone can be Capt Hindsight

We are not talking about how they have performed post draft, rather where they were rated and hence bidded on.
No one is arguing Gulden is the 32nd best player that year 🤦‍♂️

The dogs have one of the best midfields in the league and they have moved players out to get a first year in there.

We cant even move on from lesser players to try 3rd year players, it's unbelievable how averse we are to development.
Started Rankine in the midfield in round 1 and didn't see until last week. Started Rachele last year in the midfield for the first 8 weeks when he average 20 disposal and kicked 10.10 and haven't seen him in there at all. Played Pedlar against the Saints in the midfield last year who had one of his best complete game when even Dermie exploded and also haven't seen him in there at all.

Soligo started his career with a poor game in one of the Ben Keays failed Matchwinner games. And followed it up with a mostly irrelevant injury sub appearance. The consensus here was that he 'wasn't ready' and Nicks was foolish to have played him. Once he came back to the side and showed some quality. he stayed there for the rest of the season

He was also dropped for a spell last year when the trend of him pulling out a Hampton-esque non-game every 5 or 6 games wasn't stopping.

Michelanney hasn't had the same noticable flaws as Soligo. He started in the best 22 and has basically stayed there because there's never been a reason for him not to be there.

It's impossible to compare the treatment of the two unless Michelanney has a sustained period of terrible form.

I'd be curious for an unemotional analysis of this. I feel like Rachele got games straight away, and Berry, Thilthorpe and McAsey (for better or worse) saw quite a few games in their first year.

Meanwhile, maybe the two most professional teams in the AFL - Geelong and Sydney - bring their young players along slowly.

I'm not sure what to feel about this.
