We're adults though, presumably somewhat competent at what we do.Don't forget that Smith himself would have been guaranteeing the selection group that he was right to play. He was pushing to hit his trigger, no way would he have not applied as much pressure on selectors as possible.
We know the player will put his hand up regardless. We know that ageing players become desperate for their spot. Every player in the league does. Add the trigger in that we were fully aware of.
It's 100% on the coaches/selectors. They just cannot make a tough call. Except with rookies. We're happy to drag them halfway through a game we're winning or make them sub multiple games in a row when we can't make finals.
