Don't forget that Smith himself would have been guaranteeing the selection group that he was right to play. He was pushing to hit his trigger, no way would he have not applied as much pressure on selectors as possible.
We're adults though, presumably somewhat competent at what we do.

We know the player will put his hand up regardless. We know that ageing players become desperate for their spot. Every player in the league does. Add the trigger in that we were fully aware of.

It's 100% on the coaches/selectors. They just cannot make a tough call. Except with rookies. We're happy to drag them halfway through a game we're winning or make them sub multiple games in a row when we can't make finals.

Our mates down the road found that out to their detriment during the finals, playing a very well over-cooked Dixon.

Players are equal parts selfish, stupid and competitive.

But we didn't do him a disservice though, he'd have been lying about the degree of impact that his back injury would have on his form. He would have been telling the coaches that 'the back is ok, just need to find a bit of touch' and he knows that the coaches will back in a senior player for weeks and weeks to find form. Our issue isn't anything to do with playing injured players, it's that we don't hold senior players accountable for form anywhere near quick enough. Whether it's injury, personal issues or form, I don't care, the reason is irrelevant. What is relevant is that the performance doesn't warrant selection ahead of someone else and you're in the 2s, the medical room or time away.

But thats the point, the coaches allowed that to fester.

Every player in the league wants to play every weeks and they'll lie to do so.

I feel like we hold our senior players in a reverence that they do not deserve and hang onto them for far too long. We treat Brodie Smith like he’s Pendlebury, Laird likes he’s Selwood etc, we can’t image a possible outcome that they were at best good solid players who have hit a cliff in their performances and need to be moved on to allow the team to move forward.

We had a poster just the other week comparing Laird to McLeod and Roo lol.

Forgive me if this has been addressed somewhere, but why has Tyler Welsh's draft ranking dropped so much this year. If I remember rightly he was listed as potentially top 5 12 months ago. Has this been a deliberate ploy by the Crows, or has he just failed to come on?

It's because he's a tweener without a standout attribute or point of difference over type, players like that have no certain position at AFL level and tend to struggle to find a place. His size and his skillset are at odds.

ie he plays like a KPF, but he's not big enough to be one in the AFL, and doesn't have some kind of X factor to make him a high value medium (massive leap and mark, high speed, olympic endurance, elite kick and vision)

Wrong on 2 counts at least...he has great speed and acceleration and is an elite kick of the football even from outside 50m.

Do you realise the exact same thing was said about Darling and Battle in their Draft years ......it's rubbish

Logan Morris at 191 cm has also proved to be an exciting FWD in his first year at BRIS ...will be playing in a GF
And he's not as quick as Tyler

So have to disagree on all counts ......Welsh has the same attributes as Scotty .....he'll be a good AFL player

Yeah, surely he can at least play a role in a good side by his second year (provided he has a good track of fitness development)

Just think roles Scott Welsh would play .....Tyler looks a year 3 player

Quick medium sized fwds who can mark are valuable .....difficult matchup these days

have you watched him? consistency is his weakness currently none of the points you mention

Short of an injury crisis If Smith plays AFL next season we are so cooked.
If Smith has a ripping pre season and gets himself really fit, I think Nicks will pick him.
Nicks will prioritise picking experience and games played.
Next year Nicks will be coaching to save his career

With Soldo seemingly keen to get to STK, where does that leave Max Heath in the pecking order?

Is he ready to play regular AFL football?

Delist Strachan and pay him out - can’t run out a full game after 5 years!!!

Bring in someone like Heath who is hopefully ready to put real pressure on ROB.

Nailed it.

And when we talk about getting ‘back to our best’ we mean the halcyon days of nearly, almost making the finals in 2023.

Mediocre is our high water mark at present.
