So after all the pushing and shoving it was Rory Atkins that finally got the Houston deal over the line...

Imagine replacing Dan Houston with Rory Atkins off half back 😂

I haven't really been following this - how has everyone's opinion about Welsh deteriorated so much? I recall not 18 months ago many people had him as a potential top 10 pick?
He got Goddened?

You have to spend 95% every year, no matter what.

So, if we had decided to not spend it, we could have $750k or so of the cap left over.

Hopefully we were actually using that on front loading some salaries though.
That's fair - and possibly a reason we're not willing to pay out a contract. We can't know either way how much is spare in the budget. But this doesn't mitigate the fact that we are carrying some deadweight into next season because of our list management decisions.

We shouldn't be pushing against the limit with our current list. Sure next year with the influx of players.
We're bringing in 3 players from other clubs this trading period. Presumably we're over-paying to lure them away from their current clubs (maybe not for ANB, but almost certain for Peatling & Cumming).

Presumably they were able to do that because they front-loaded the contracts of many of our existing players, effectively bringing part of their 2025 salaries into the 2024 salary cap. This would make us close to the 2024 salary cap limit, while giving us room in 2025. It would also render us unable to pay out any contracted players in 2024.

Not saying this is definitely what has happened... but it's entirely plausible.

Even if we assume the Rat is a salary dump, how many more of those can Port take. That's Luko, Esava and Rat on more money than they should be. Shouldn't they be throwing crazy money at Bergman and Butters over these types?

rory atkins should count as one the 4 sanfl recruits. bloody hell

Port allow Houston to go because they thought they had Perryman secured as a FA, only to then end up with the Rat as his replacement? On top of paying Luko 1M per season for 6 years?

Neither Rat or Luko have a reputation for standing up in big games or playing tough footy
