I don’t doubt Jenny but don’t know why the recruiting group would give anything away?
Or lock anyone in 6 weeks out. They’d do that in the week ahead of the draft.

Doesn’t mean that they wouldn’t have done the work and have a very good idea at this point. But I understand that the recruiters finalise selections in the week before. Hell, at the moment we don’t know what selections we’re taking to the draft.

Although I can’t see us trading pick 4.

Unless we get an F1 or F2 coming back the other way.
it does seem ridiculous when a club - like us - have had SO many first and second rounders over a 2/3/4/5 year period. so arbitrary to preclude the flexibility of having one year only trading out both a first and second rounder

That's not what the rule says. The new rule says 4 years, plus a 5th if they haven't played 10 games. The old 3-year time limit has now disappeared completely.

Yes, it's a 2-tier system. That's a good thing, as it encourages teams to use the rookie list for developing rookies, rather than a half-way house for players on their way out of the system.
Clubs will still use it for a halfway house for players on their way out of the system. The games limits kick in for years 4 and 5.

If we rookie Smith what chance do you think he’d still be on the rookie list in 4 years?

The sooner they move to having one list the better. Just make a rule that players drafted after a certain pick number can be put on one year contracts?

They're never going to be AFL players, but at least Strachan provides us with reasonable depth in a position where we have few options. Burgess offers little.

Culling Strachan (or others) opens up a list position, but it doesn't get us into a draft position where we might be able to grab the likes of Dobson/Travaglia/etc. There's not a lot of point in culling a contracted player, if the replacement is someone we're selecting at pick 70+ in the draft.
Agreed, it only makes sense if we trade our F1 into this year. Probably why they haven’t done it yet, waiting to see what happens in trade week.

Obviously we aren’t taking Jack Michalaney though. Do you know if he nominates for the draft this year, and doesn’t get taken, does he still qualify as a Father/Son next year?

That's a third of the AFL teams....in this particular draft I call bullshit.
Amazing, eh? He's only been touted a possible pick one for 18 months. Just because you don't like it doesn't make it any less true. Can things change after the Combine? Absolutely, but that is the state of play now.

No. Players are only eligible for selection under the F/S rules the first year in which they nominate for the draft. We could still draft him next year, but we wouldn't have any special rights under the F/S rule, he would just be another kid in the open draft.

No he hasn't Finn O'Sullivan was the clear No.1 coming into this season, Draper was in the next discussion along with Levi Ashcroft, Jagga Smith and Josh Smillie. Smillie was probaly a clear 2nd in that group even.

Me liking it or not is bullshit too.

My order of preference all along has been 1, Lalor, 2, Sid Draper, 3. Finn O'Sllivan.
