Murphy should be around 25th plus picked.

All 3 we brought in this trade period should be in the 22.

Plus Pick 4

And Curtin.

I bet Nicks sees it differently though.
Why?

Nicks gave McHenry a chance at that role. Pedlar had a go. From round 11 he was stuck with Murphy.

He's not stuck anymore.

Wish we found a way to get Ned Moyle out of the suns this year. Looks like Reidy had a half decent season in the WAFL this year though.
Moyle would’ve been nice, but there will always be rucks like that available every season. Reidy is a far cheaper option than Draper and I don’t think would give you much less output.

And what point is there in using our F1 this year? We only have 2 list vacancies, and we certainly won't need to use our F1 to match a Welsh bid.
What does Burgess offer our list in any way? If we paid him out it would give us the flexibility to trade back in if someone we love slides, and at worst we could take Jack Michalaney as a rookie. There is definitely several players on our list that won’t ever be AFL standard footballers, and when your primary list is only 38 players that’s a big handicap to endure.

It also gives the competition an impression of our mindset when it comes to negotiations in the future. If we’re weak now, people will assume we are going to be weak in the future. Was it Kelly who said he’s no good at playing poker…. God that’s still cringe.

Who has ever suggested that Reid was weak with trading?

I thought the suggestion was that he was a bit difficult. Wasn't that in one of the articles mid-year?

If we feel we need to bring in a 29 year old because we don’t believe Pedlar is good enough then what does that say about our recruiting staff?

It might be worth looking deeper into why we are bringing a 29-year-old into the side... We have pretty average leadership at the club. If a bloke like Lachlan Murphy can get a gig in the leadership squad, you know we are in serious trouble.

Would the younger lads on our list like to be led by someone like ANB or Murphy?

I think ANB makes someone like Pedlar a much better player especially if Peds can stay on the park for more than 3 games.

Mate - beyond Dawson and Tex we lack quality on-field leaders

The need to bring in ANB is a result of previous failed drafts

ANB has traits which we lack, 1. Consistency, and 2. Leadership - not to mention his a proven AFL footballer

ANB will also help to accelerate the development of players like Rash

It’s not hard to see why we are bringing him into the club

Also keep in mind that ANB only kicked 2 more goals (9) than Murphy last year.

I get that's not his role necessarily but an ageing defensive forward that doest kick alot of goals with strong leadership. Pick 28 seems overs.
He was used a fair bit as a tagger in the latter part of the year which pulls his goals down
but did a great job. Boosted his tackles and possies and reckon his 3rd at b and f reflects .
If he replaces Murphy at pressure forward all year reckon we will see a few more.

I don't agree with the argument that ANB is too old and we should be using 28 (now about 31) to draft someone in. The team is always going to need quality and experience around its developing players. Young inexperienced players - no matter what level of potential - can be burnt out by not being supported by excellence.

Peatling - possibly a future pick but we will see what other clubs have as well and what that looks like.
- Hamish would usually come but left him back at the office to work on pick 4

Wonder if there is more going on
Wonder if it's because the Combine was over the weekend so there's a bit to unpack with interviews / testing results etc?

I personally am really happy that we are bringing in ANB for those very reasons, however smallish forwards is an area that we have spent, 2 top 10 picks on (Rachelle and Pedlar), given up pick 5 (Rankine) and just had one crowned club champion (Keays). It just isn’t an area that we need to give up such a valuable pick on.

It feels like we have all the leverage in this situation, but we gave that up weeks ago because we wanted to play nice with the other kids.

Only way I see Murphy in the side is as a sub

Given the sub usually plays the last quarter and a bit...and that is the time Murphy goes missing, may want to change that idea. We really don't want an impact sub that impacts with 1 disposal, which will probably be a clanger anyways.

You see it’s posts like this is why us “negative” posters fire back and this place does end up in a shit show because it’s clappers like you that don’t understand the counter argument.

No doubt ANB is a quality player and for a club that’s contending during his remaining career, pick 28 in a deep draft would be fine. But that’s not us, we are years away and the player we picked up at 28 could form a part of our next premiership push, ANB won’t be. ANB selection is to help us win a few more games this year to improve our position and take heat off the club and nothing more, it’s not about winning a flag.

And we aren’t saying getting ANB isn’t a bad thing, it’s the price we are paying as I’ve explained above. We were told when 25 was mooted that “you bedwetters need to relax until it actually happens, it’s only a journo”. Now that it’s actually happens the argument has changed.

As it stands with the recruitment of Peatling, had we not also grabbed ANB, pick 28 would have been used to secure him so we lose it anyway. Using next years second rounder for ANB I would have been more comfortable with, so it doesn’t really matter anymore.
And use what for Peatling?

I'm all for replacing Murphy with ANB and feel this is a win.

But let's not get carried away with him being a difference maker.

I don't disagree with you... but it's not happening. Silvers has already stated that Burgess is contracted for 2025, and we're not delisting any contracted players (other than those we're moving to the rookie list).

Pedlar is a mid that just has a forward rotation. i see pedlar and ANB in the best 23.

I don't think anyone is saying that.

What is being suggested is that 28 (or 31, whatever it ends up being) is too high a price to pay for a player of ANB's age, given that we're only expecting to get 3 good seasons out of him (anything more being a bonus).

Nobody is suggesting that we should be using 28/31 to draft a younger player. There's no talk of any other player, just the price we should be paying for ANB.
