You're right about minimal changes occurring on game day, apart from swapping defenders when one of them is getting towelled up, but I think its more about collective mindset (think no tagging a few years back, which is slowly coming back in vogue) rather than any great body of evidence that says its the only way to go, especially if you're losing.

Structure doesn't mean you can't shift the magnets around if things aren't working. The coaches are surely there for more than telling players to just try harder or play better, which seems to be the message nowadays.
Normally the coaches (for any side and in most sports) spend game day making corrections for when players individually are doing the wrong thing with their team structure.

Sure, they make changes and rotations - I just think supporters overstate the idea of coaches making big positional or strategic changes during games.

I think you rarely see that in any team sport.

So are you saying if a coach can see a glaring advantage over the opposition during a game he’s not going to make that change

It's almost like you have been advising the Crows coaching group to just go with the flow.

Hasn't that worked out swimmingly...

There is a reason why most coaches look forward to coaching against Nicks.

I very much dispute that Nicks doesn't make changes on match days.

It's what we've routinely seen under him.

Deplorable start playing with our rehearsed game plan

Throw caution to the wind partway through the game given that we have nothing to lose. Toss game plan out the window, including positional changes, altering midfield mix.

Get back into the game. Just win / just lose.

Next week what happens? Try our original game plan again but do it better? Accept that our game plan sucks and play free-wheeling, play-on-at-all-costs, minimal structure freelance football? Is that sustainable?

We lack clarity and direction which is why we've brought in this Brisbane guy.

Tidy up our broken and flawed game plan. Ensure that we stick to it which (chicken or egg) includes ensuring that we have a game plan worth sticking to.

I thought people were argueing that gameplans don't change as frequently as has been reported .....but in-game changes of gameplan

Depends on what you call the gameplan and what you call in-game strategies or tactics

IMO gameplan can be simply broken down to either a stoppage game, transition game, or turnover game ......and in what part of the ground you seek to establish a road block

Positional moves, speed on the game, or slowing the game down, are in-game strategies .....depending on how your opposition wants to play, and state of the game .....that's the primary coaches role these days.

I disagree with Mostyn ....Nicks has wanted players developed with positional flexibility .....why, if you ain't going to move them ? .....but also I'd differentiate that strategy based on the experience level within the group, which we haven't had YET

Exactly and you saved me posting it.

Nicks has admitted it, perfect example was against Gold Coast rd 1. Our gameplan and some positional changes at 3/4 time. We kicked 3 goals up to 3/4 time and 5 in the last qtr and almost stole the game.

There’s numerous examples of going in with stupid elections and gameplan and we come back hard to lose. Sydney loss in 2023 in another example.

I think it was 2022, we lost to Gold Coast in Gold Coast by a reasonable margin as they kicked some late goals when we went for it. Nicks “we saw we were a chance to win the game and went for the win, conceding some late goals”.

It’s in Nicks DNA, he said it when we appointed him and it was posted here recently “contested ball and defence”. Contested ball in his mind is pushing a forward up the ground like Murphy to create more numbers around the ball. Defence, move it slowly to protect defence. The only year he’s attacked was in 2023 and we had the best attack in the comp. 9th best defence and he overreacted badly.

I’ve told the story about the Crows official I spoke to at the Crows v North SANFL game and haven’t named him, now he’s out of the club it was Marco Bello. Spoke with him for about 15 mins, was a top bloke and very willing to talk as I gave him a number of chances to wind it up.

I questioned the change in gameplan and why we went defensive “we couldn’t defend the attacking gameplan” I said yes you could, we had the 9th ranked defence and it was a young one, it was going to improve with experience.

I also mentioned Curtin and why he was playing deep defence “he needs to learn how to defend, he’s only played a little bit of midfield, are you going to chuck him straight in, where would you play him”

I said why aren’t we developing him as a mid in the SANFL then and why have we spent another high pick on a defender when our midfield sucks. As for where I would play him against Port, I said half back, he dismissed it. Hence why I said we wouldn’t pick him against Port, funny that we played him at…….half back.

He blamed our slow start on the players getting ahead of themselves, I said if that’s the case then that’s on the coaches again.

We covered a lot more including our poor drafting, especially midfield. He defended Jones, “ made top 10 last year” me “yeah and now he’s playing SANFL”

Again a top bloke and I was loathe to name him but since he’s gone, I’m ok with it.

There you go AFC979810, I know you wanted to be included ;)

This is terrifying and confirms what I thought - our coaches aren't up to it. They just don't get it.

Honestly if this was a boxing match I would have won 9 out of 10 rounds.

I think he originally expected me to be a supporter who would accept his responses, little did he realise I was a hard core fanatic who dedicates his life to trying to fix the Crows woes 😂

All credit to him, he didn’t dismiss me or try and end it, he kept it going, I think he enjoyed the conversation as I was probing and questioning rather than accepting what he was saying.

Unsurprisingly I went hard on Nicks and Hamish, maybe he liked that 😃

He would have found it refreshing not to get the Dorothy Dixers the media repeatedly dish out.. and it isn't even your main profession!
Great story too by the way. Cheers👍

Thanks, I told it in a PM at the time, then later gave some details on here and copped a bollocking. Could have named him then but as a club employee didn’t want any potential blow back to come his way.

Maybe he raised some of your points with the other coaches

So you got him fired

I am sure he loved the conversation. Players and coaches love nothing more than hardcore armchair experts cornering them at an SANFL game whilst they are working and telling them how to do their jobs.

You got a bollocking because you came out with three predictions saying you had an inside source. All 3 were woefully wrong.

Happy to believe this situation happened and you didnt just make it up. Based on the above I think poor Marco was just feeding you bullshit to try and get rid of you.

But I do appreciate you keeping me in the loop my friend.

I have said multiple times that it is true in almost all team sports, and almost all coaches.

You're the one obsessed with Nicks. I was talking about the game overall.

You quoted me... & now spitting the dummy.

When an opposition's player gets hot, our coaches usually do nothing to rectify this.

I'm obsessed with wanting a coach who is competent, which is my right as a member.

Most normal people prefer success... but you prefer to spend your time making excuses for mediocrity & getting annoyed at others who refuse to accept it.

I genuinely feel sorry for the staff that work at AFL clubs.

They must have people bothering them a dozen times a day with their "ideas" about what should be done differently to "help the boys win". You can't just roll your eyes at them, without coming across like an arseh*le.

It's not just our club - most clubs are pretty decent with dealing with it.

You quoted me, FFS. I was talking about team sports and coaching structure. My point is that fans have naive ideas about how much coaches are flipping players around in professional team sports.

You're the one who wanted to complain about Nicks for the twentieth time today, and thousandth time since the end of the season. It's worse than Vader and Mitch Marsh.

Put me on ignore if you can't handle talking about Nicks' lack of competence on the Adelaide Big Footy Board.

I got your point & disagreed with it & now you are having a spat. Deal with a difference of opinion or put me on ignore if you can't handle it.

Feel free to look at the opposition players who were BOG against us & usually dominated from quarter 1 & our coaching group did nothing. Usually a spare defender across HB.

Seems to be a regular thing

Maybe but you should also have some stock answers - or his stock answers were poorly worded

''we looked at the overall trend and decided defense would be the way to go ''

' we have a plan for Dan which we will work on through the year ''

' Jones finished in the top 10 and we felt he was going to continue ''

'' our slow starts were us relaxing as a group and its something we are working on ''

ie sharing the blame but leaving enough doubt

Is DABM Rucci because it seemed he crumbled

Lol, given you were there you know exactly what happened. Tell me what’s your take on this:

“Mate ill let you go, taken enough of your time”
“No all good” whilst he continues the convo.

Game had finished, players and coaches were going down to the rooms and I gave him 2-3 opportunities to end it but he kept chatting.

Never said I had a source, said I spoke to someone at the ground, now you know who. Based on what he said about Curtin would you have expected him to play the following week? When I said half back he said on who? He named their half forwards who were nimble, he said would you play Curtin on them? I said I’d play him on Gorgiadis as he pushes up the ground.

Given you think I didn’t make it up, as for feeding me bullshit, which parts actually sound like bullshit?
