I know this won't be a popular opinion amongst the sack everyone crew... Wayne's point he made in his post was that - sacking Nicks doesn't automatically equal success. In fact it usually means more rebuilding and changes. The other point being, if you think Nicks is the problem then you can't also think Hamish, Reid, Kelly are the problem.... Given Hamish & Reid were there long enough before Nicks to create this list that isn't exactly a masterpiece then it's only fair they go too. Do people actually think we currently have a premiership list?
A disappointing season like this year is never because of just one thing, but a cumulative list that causes a snowball effect.
This year the main issues were in no particular order.

  • selection and positional mistakes (particularly with our outside mids and transition players).
  • a very tough draw
  • injuries, particularly to our spine with Murray and Tillthorpe.
  • the pain caused by horrific top 20 drafting over the last 10 years meaning no superstar mids to carry the team.

Personally I am very intrigued by the coaching help being flagged for the club as I have long felt that Nicks is really good at a lot of the aspects of being a head coach, but miles off the mark in a few vital areas like selection and strategy. If we have identified this and are looking to split the role to some extent then I think it could work well if we get the right person.

If we then ace this trade period and bring in Cumming, a gun mid or 2 and/or Lukoscius then I honestly think the future can be very bright. However we simply have to nail this draft and get at least 1 A grade midfielder.

If we dont draft a high quality mid in this draft it would be a disaster. There's a stick of them.

Im also very interested to see how we develop Curtin and where. The kid can play anywhere and sometimes that can be to his detriment. I saw his midfield games in the reserves and whilst its clearly a different level..... he was well above it.

Disagree , the decision to extend was always poor.

Nick’s had earned the right to show everyone what he could do in a 5th season and that he deserved to be extended based on A successful performance.

He had not earnt the extension.
I didn’t say I agreed with it.. I just said that had they announced it BEFORE the season started, they could have got away with it. But by choosing to do it after a round one loss made absolutely no sense whatsoever.

Im confused by it

I agree on Nicks strengths you identified - and have said many times he is a great senior assistant - the buffer

I am also confused as to why Kelly isnt that person you identified for strategy etc

I guess my point is why are we bringing in an extra layer or not replacing an assistant and getting the selection and strategy assistant - or indeed a replacement coach

I guess you need to know the definition of the roles? Kelly’s role as Head of Football clearly isn’t one of overseeing the coach or game day strategy, rather making sure the football department runs smoothly. I think a senior Director of Football would be the Neil Balme type position who is there to guide and assist the coaching panel.

My guess is we might get Cumming but Port might get Luko. Don't think either club will get both.

Luko it's more to do with us not wanting to give up what the Suns want in picks.
Port don’t have what the Sun want in picks… so what happens then?

Yeah true

But I would also hope Kelly provides feedback on game day etc as he is always lock step with Nicks to the box and back

You could announce Balme as coming in to review oops bad word bad word - look over the football dept and give advice without calling him DoF - having Balme as DoF would imply a full time role and I personally dont want him under that level of scrutiny

Come in run your eyes over the list and coaching set up - advise on moments ie be the coaches coach

They trade Houston and they will.

Or he stays.

And the Suns have very little leverage in any case.
They aren’t trading Houston to get back into this draft only to then hand it on to the Suns for Lukocious.

But they will. They will trade Houston for a first rounder this year - and will use their F2 for Luko. And given they could reasonably expect that to be 14-18 probably a fair pick. Certainly for GC where our second could be as good as say 20(unlikely) anywhere up to 30

And obviously if Port had a poor year then it gets even better for GC

It’s not his (Kelly’s) role though. Balme (or similar) could come in on a part time basis. Sit in on game day and give feedback and advice. Nicks doesn’t need someone to oversee every aspect, just the (IMO) game day and selection process.
