Since when did that matter at all? Two of the greatest players of all time (Buckley and Voss) have never won a premiership as a coach. Chris Fagan never played at AFL level; McCrae was a decent player but never a star.

It's just a question mark.
Voss and Buckley were great players. Not sure how they are relevant. Buckley is a wanted coach for a reason, and Carlton is every chance to win the flag this year.
Macrae was a premiership player.
Those types have pull on a player instinctively.
Fagan had a good career at the lower league and appears a good people manager. His failures to get his groups performing to expectation is a question mark though.

Apologies I thought it was in reference to Montgomery, hard to keep up on here sometimes.
By the same token Tom Hafey was a pretty ordinary player and Alistair Clarkson would be best described as a journeyman as a player.

He was a B&F winner. And yes I appreciate you do get some average ones but that is still a very good achievement. He was a decent player - I would suggest better than Clarko on field

What about Allan Jeans or Tom Hafey? On reflection, it's possibly more of a reflection of the sheer number of coaches that are ex players. Hard to get correlation when 90+% plus are from one group. Can't see anyone hiring an SANFL coach as an AFL head coach.
John Longmire and Michael Voss are 1 & 2 on the ladder right now
Damien Hardwick was a fair player too, as was Chris Scott.
Ken Hinkley was an absolute star player as was Adam Simpson
Maybe Clarkson is the exception?

Premiership coach Luke Beveridge was a 3 club journeyman of similar or lesser status as a player to Clarkson.

Hardwick and the Scott twins were solid defenders.
Hinkley was a half back flank that had 2 great years but pretty standard otherwise.
Simpson was an accumulator mid, not an absolute star - 1 AA nod in a 15 year career.
Clarkson and Beveridge had similar careers as fringe best 22 players.
Sheedy, Malthouse and Pagan were tough back pockets, nothing more.
And yes, there's been plenty of great players who've been good coaches.
What does this all prove? That it doesn't matter if you were an average, good or great player - you can still be an average, good or great coach.

Nick Bryan seems to be having a pretty dominant season in the VFL, surely clubs are asking the question with the limited rucks available?
Don't care about contract status, Soldo was also contracted and Richmond wanted to keep him.

Bryan is a 22 yr old 2nd round pick who's starting to look pretty good and given their other rucks are a 65 year old Goldstein and loose cannon Draper, Essendon not casually handing Bryan to another team this off season.
Bryan has been on their list for 3 years prior to 2024, had been performing well in the VFL and yet they still brought in Goldstein. Draper is on big coin and is their preferred number one ruck when fit and is only mid 20s, Bryan probably isn't getting regular games with Draper still there. So either target Bryan this year or Draper next year, both will want the number one ruck mantle.
