What about they change the draft to -

Sides outside the Finals (10 sides) get 2 picks in the draft before any of the Finals teams (8 teams)

So 18th placed team gets picks 1 & 11
17th paced team gets 2 & 12
And so on.....
9th placed side gets 10 & 20
Then...
Finals sides get there 1st pick from 21 to 28
After that it continues as a normal draft

Scrap the academies but .... keep Father-Sons however with F-S picks you can only have say ...... 2 in a 4 year period or 1 in a 3 year period...which means teams will have to do their homework if they have several players to pick from within a space of a couple of years

Now you’re suggesting fundamental reform to the draft. Should have happened years ago.

My preference is to scrap the draft totally and use a punitively enforced salary cap as the equaliser. But if the draft is to be maintained then this is the sort of reform that is needed.

Teams in the cellar lack the mechanisms to turn their list over and replace with elite young talent. They get stuck in the doldrums. One early pick is never enough.

At the time , if they'd picked anyone who wasn't at least a bit mid-fielderish , they'd have got Lynched by angry Bigfooty posters.
Most people here had Clark locked in as the player they wanted at our pick.

It looked as though we went into that draft determined on finding a couple of mids and imo stuffed both picks. It was a really shallow draft for midfielders and completely the wrong plan. In any of the stronger draft years both Clark and Coffield would have been taken until outside the 1st round. I have said this a number of times if Clark had of ever worked on improving his running and strength he could have been a star. As it stands he is another average midfielder who wouldnt get a game in most other teams with decent midfiled depth.

I dont want to jinx the kid but its only a matter of time until he suffers another injury, he just doesnt have the body for the rigours of the game. I dont know what $$$ he is on, but if we are to improve he should be only list depth moving forward.

Can't work, unfortunately.

a) Players aren't money driven enough, they'll take lower dollars for a serious chance of team success, so the more successful clubs will get the better players.

b) Players and agents know that you have more chance of a successful career going into a successful development system, so again the more successful clubs will get the better players.

It's a recipe for the rich to keep getting richer.

Howard was awful first game back and has been pretty good ever since. I'd keep at an appropriate price and contract length, unless we are swept off our feet by draft capital.
He's someone who is worth more to us than we'd get in return. KPD's like him dont grow on trees so we'd be mad to let one leave.

And anyone claiming he's been poor after the first game is delusional.

Unfortunately with 3rd party deals like Geelong's Cotton On/ Armstrong Creek real estate scam, the salary cap has become a bit of a toothless tiger.

We scrap the draft & every quality kid will be split between about 10 clubs.

And those clubs do not include us.

I have zero interest in going back to the 1980's.

very well said, must be a lot of younger members i guess, maybe awoke to afl about mid 90s,seen 3 pre season flags,4 grand finals,19 wins in a row & some good times, life aint so bad they thinking, think again

carlton and hawthorn played in 22 grand finals between 68 and 95 between them, saints dees and dogs played in 2

ps add lions and swans to the list and it remains 2 & they aint what they were between 68 and 81/96

I mean i HATED Howard for a long time but dumping him for Cordy is yuck.

If we could get something good for a trade id consider it but hes cleaned up alot of his shit stuff this year and become that handy lockdown KPD i always wanted him to be.

Wilkie looks better with him in the side too. Footy sides are symbiotic, as soon as you move one part out it puts pressure on a another. Sides like Geelong can go from premiership to missing finals once the experience and cohesions levels are tested.

gringo2011 weren't you a big homer for Konstanty?

I wasn't what you'd call a huge fan but he was of interest. Reckon he could be a good player for a Lyon side and we need small forward depth.

Is Dylan Shiel still available this year? Just asking.

Look, after last week I wouldn't be on the "Seb must play" bandwagon, but he spent considerable time forward last week. Kicked a Joe the Goose but did little else. Perhaps Seb will be the sub?

Interesting that Crouch's knee is still not right, I wonder if it is a chronic issue? I cant believe Seb Ross can hold his position in the team after last weeks performance he was terrible?
Hope it's not a chronic thing with Brad, but as a more mature player who plays a tough role, it may just be that the knee is weakening and starting to show some wear and tear, same with Hayes. Regarding Ross, I just expect that kind of experienced middle- size mid to be getting a whole lot more of the ball, and I'm not seeing it.
