Heard it from someone who directly said it to them.
Someone might want to have a word with him and tell him that once he nominates for the draft any one of 18 clubs can pick him up. Pretty sure there’s something called draft tampering that the AFL doesn’t take too kindly to.

yep your right about that hawthorn stuff, but my comment had nothing to do with the academies,it had to do with people saying"scrap the draft"those people clearly dont remember life before the draft,or werent alive,so they better be coming up with something better than scrap the draft to fix things,

from 96 to 2023 hawks and blues 4 flags, saints dees and dogs 2,grand finals 6-5(not counting the draw)i think,i like things much better now than before the draft, then shall we dig up the wooden spoon stats 68-95 and 96 to 2023?i can say with certainty that blues and hawks were 0 68-95,dont need to search that one,i believe the saints had 7 alone
without the help of dees/dogs

spoon stats 0-12 6-3

The point I was making was that prior to the draft, recruitment was limited by zoning. Clubs were heavily restricted on who they could and could not add to their list based on an allocated geographical area.

Success was heavily linked to whether an allocated zone produced enough good players. It also wasn’t fair and created long term inequality.

Those people like me who want to remove the restrictions of the draft are doing so on the provisio that there are no geographical barriers to recruitment. We haven’t had that for almost 60 years (which includes the era of zoning).

The salary cap would be the great equaliser, but I accept the argument that trusting the AFL to enforce fairly is problematic.

I’d accept the draft more readily if it was structurally reformed, providing a balance between removing all the discretionary compromises while giving clubs on the bottom a way out of their mediocrity.

The history of the AFL does not offer much optimism about this happening.

It's unequalization, how can you have Victorian sides that finish lower than QLD teams and can't even get access to there own top 40 academy players at a discount as they do, yet some Victorian teams haven't played finals in over a decade.
AFL have to change the rules. At least make it if you finish bottom 8 allow unrestricted drafting to your own academy prospects.
1. That won't happen
2. The AFL DGAF about an even competition

Smith looks the ideal player if we finish around 15th. Draper looked a really ordinary last match. Anyway, we'll get a better read after this weekend. A lot of the ideal kids for us are late first round early second and are the more contested guys. Most of the ones in our range are a bit outside.

The draft order is going to fluctuate wildly. Guys like Moraes and Draper are likely to drop a bit. Smillie and O'Sullivan look likely to stay high, I think Jagga could even go higher if he continues his form through the champs.

I'd like pick 4 for Jagga and then you'd probably be happy with some extra picks between 12 and 20.
Smith and O'Sullivan for mine. Not impressed with the others so far. I do like the look of botts boy who is steadily climbing.

Assuming we just take the 3 picks and Cole NGA there's still Max Hall and a Zebra to squeeze in which makes 6. That's enough IMO. Any others should be seniors worthy of top 25 on the list.

Richmond all over O’Sullivan is the rumour.

RTB said his knee is not 100%, I watched his past 3 games, he had 12 tackles in last weeks game its nothing to do with fitness.

Waddled between contests though to be fair.

Elwood Peckett and Boston Everett are draft eligible aren’t they?

Who is Bott's boy? Smillie is a gun too but not getting him.

I wouldn't expect him to last anyway. Smith l like, the rest l could leave pretty easily.
Despite the ambitions you've mentioned, recent history says the spoils go to the wealthy and we have SFA equity in this draft. Moving our later picks up a few places is all I'm expecting. Would be good if we can gut our future 2,3,4th round picks to do some progressive work in that space but it's a tough market. SOS seems good at it though so something similar to last year IMO. I'd be very happy with that.

Cooper hynes. Will be top ten by the end of the champs. He’s the same size as phillipou. I know he is listed at 190 but he’s bigger. Got great forward and mid craft
I don't see the top 10 in him. Late 1st l reckon. Very solid all round but lacks the pace to elevate him into the top echelon. I think he'll play 200 games though and wouldn't even stop to think about it with our 2nd pick.

I’m pretty relaxed about it all.

They will need to move through the gears this off season. Especially as every free agent they have targeted is a next season proposition

I’m sure it’s been mentioned but I haven’t read it so I thought I’d add to the Battle discussion…. But not having battle on the books would free more crap to chase LDU with.

If Battle gave us pick 5 and the ability to snag LDU you be crazy to say no….
I think we’ve got plenty of crap space even if Battle stays. Probably too much crap.

And maybe that’s what they’ll do and grab a first round pick for sliding back in the top 5.

Who knows.

But if the draft happened tonight and we had 4+5.

I would be thrilled walking away with Smith and Draper.
You’re dreaming if you think the AFL will give up a first rounder to St.Kida for Battle. More like end of first round.

There is record of the deals done for other band 1 compo though. If the deal for Battle exceeds say, the McKay deal, the afl would have its hands tied and as mentioned, battle benefits from age (length of deal) and the cba increase (money).

Whether based on ability he should get band 1 or not isn’t really relevant, what the market offers for him is relevant.
