Clearly makes it sound like Battle wants to enjoy his football and wants on field success. The worrying thing here is Collingwood is sniffing around (I wouldn't underestimate this) as well as Hawthorn.

Money isn't the issue according to Clearly. Says we have more money than most clubs and can pay him what ever we want.

It's all about his happiness and how we are going i.e. winning games. He wants to see success on the horizon, so if he's leaving he thinks another club can offer that more than us in terms of success.

They think we are less confident of retaining him which makes Missons comments very disappointing. Rath pulled this shit and it killed supporters confidence in him.

Clearly says its more likely we get band 2 for battle than band 1. which is end of first round. He is saying we need to increase the cash offer to Battle to try and get the opposition clubs to lift his contract value. The problem here is if he's keen on the pies and will accept less to play in a flag. As soon as that happens we are effectively cooked.

I hope if Josh leaves he is leaving to the highest bidder. But if he's leaving for on-field opportunities and is willing to earn less to do so, ouch!

I think it's very unlikely we get the top 5 pick outcome people have been suggesting.

this is the way i feel also, but lost cause or not i know i wouldnt stick with walking away,so i wont say it,certainly couldnt just pick up with another team

only saints blatantly screwing ourselves could do that, like with some of the rumours with that shiel business last season

but the afl doing it too us,dont think i could walk away

we should have re-signed him early... i think they've tried to be too smart by putting off extensions to open up a war chest to attract players thinking we were going to make the 8 again

the form has dropped off and it's opened the door for someone like Collingwood to come at Josh Battle.

meanwhile we can't even get some interest from weitering.

I’m strictly talking about the concept of applying the next pick as the next player. It’s a flawed concept as I pointed out why. I know we can’t draft Daicos - it’s about showing the quality of the draft and the next handful of picks provides the depth to what that pick would be selecting from when highlighting what’s available. Not that we would land the very next pick.

All I’m promoting is that we need genuine A grade mids. That we won’t win anything without them.

Not all drafts are equal, not all mids are equal. I reckon the mids we need are ball winners on the inside. Most of ours are too outside and can't win first use. Coupled with a ruckman that is an average tap ruck it's a bad combo.

I think Jagga Smith is the best option around where we have a pick but after that the guys that win their own ball are later on. Smith isn't the exact type we need but he's the best available IMO. Smilie looks ideal but will be gone.

O'Sullivan could potentially drop behind Jagga if his form continues and O'Sullivan can't show anything injured.

Murphy Reid, Cody Anderson and Harvey Langford are players to watch for needs IMO. Not sure where they end up going but they most likely go late first round to well into the second.

Apparently told him that he should go look at what's out there and then told him we'd keep him if we didn't get what we wanted. Not sure it's true but that was the rumour.
That sounds like a rumour on par with 'Battle is disgruntled'.

Invented by people who have an axe to grind.

absolutely nailed it. need a decent tap ruck. followed by an offensive inside mid whos a contested beast. jack steele is the defencive version who's now down on confidence and form.

Steele was argurably better than DeGoey in his AA 5th in the brownlow year. Since he’s been injured and out of form. Maybe both this things are related to his frustration.

Tend to agree on Steele but conversely as captain he should be able to challenge the coaches. How do we know he hasn’t and gotten no response.

Ross, BJ have never come across as feedback takers
Whaaaa?

Gringo posted about Ross giving Steele a few home truths & Steele not being able to handle it. Where did Steele giving feedback & the coaches not being able to cop it come from?

This thread has gone to seriously bizarre areas.

Blatantly screwing ourselves?

We could offer more and he could walk for less.

It’s the unrestricted free agency crapshoot
i was referring to the rumoured shiel deal last season, your example re battle is not screwing ourselves, which i literally posted in a comment here, that i could move on from it in that instance, with no blame on the club=wires crossed

Well, the rumoured Shiel deal never happened so maybe it was the BS most thought it was.

Your confusing opinion with fact.

Cleary and McClure said their opinion was that Battle is a band 2 type of player - no one in here would dispute that

But they also spoke about clubs offering over as he is unrestricted and how that could play out and band 2 would be a horrific outcome for us and we shouldn’t lose him for that - which again, no one here would dispute.

There was no new facts or updates in that podcast.

Except for Marshall is having his head turned.

i was giving an example of where i draw the line, that being giving the club i hate most a frdp and taking a broken axx and his salary off their hands

but i do think something was in the works, lucky for us he did another injury or something else to put us off

HAWKS LINKS TO BATTLE GROW

Hawthorn are coming hard for St Kilda defender Josh Battle, who is an unrestricted free agent.

“Hawthorn is coming really hard; remember they missed their key defensive priorities last year? Ben McKay chose Essendon and Esava Ratugolea chose Port Adelaide,” Clark said.

“Now they’re setting their sights on Josh Battle.”

Ralph said he would be “worried” if he was the Saints and Clark said the club should try to retain his services.

“St Kilda desperately need to keep Josh Battle, he’s one of their most important players,” Clark said.

“He’s got good relationships at the Saints so it will be interesting to see how that plays out, they’re confident of keeping him in the red, white and black.”

Battle has averaged 17.6 disposals and 7.9 marks in 2024, continuing to shine as one of the game’s premier intercept defenders.

Roo was offered much more by Collingwood but stayed at the Saints.

I know from the mowman days Battle was unhappy at the club but when Lyon took over he was very happy.

If he gets between 900-1 mill he needs to take it and run. That is outrageous figures for someone of his ability.

Roo was playing in the glory days, it’s not comparable. Right now, what incentive is there to stay for less money.
At the same time , if we were to up our offer by 50K right now, do you think his agent would suggest signing, or hold off and see if we'll go higher?
I’m not saying now necessarily, I’m sure his management will do what’s best for him.

No, you’re missing the point. If we’re speculating Steele didn’t like feedback, and people are saying we should move him on because he’s stroppy. There might be a million reasons why, including him giving feedback back that’s been ignored, his form being shit because of the shitful style of footy we play.

People willing to shit on Steele but not consider why he’s stroppy

I don’t know about that - someone posted a video of Joey and Roo talking shit here recently and Roo
said that Pou has been receiving “negative criticism” (whatever that is?) of late …...

Probably the one kid that could take it to be honest. Eastern European tennis dad style parenting hardens them up.

How about we give them pick 4 and Howard for Pick 1?

Not sure I would for this draft to be honest. Smilie looks a gun but doubt he ends up way ahead of Smith. It's not a draft with a standout pick 1.

If we don't get band 1, and we lose Battle for a Gresham like pick, that will just about be it for me.
I have been to one game this year, my circumstances have changed and have an MCC Membership.
The only possibility us getting decent mids to give us hope is two top ten picks and early ones.
Another draft of one pick while booster clubs get free NGA's and legacy clubs get no.1 F/S picks will destroy any hope I have left.
Hope, we get that with some top end dps, but that's all. If we lose Battle we have to get band 1, otherwise we are a lost cause and I can't justify the $600 a year when the club isn't maximising player talent by either keeping Josh or getting a top ten dp, and the AFL treat us with contempt wanting us to be the Washington Generals.
It is demoralising.

Been saying that for 12 years. They some how humiliate us and we come back for another smack.

Was widely spoken about on here. We were going to let him look around but if we didn't get band one we were matching.

not much on gettable today,

pies maybe after barrass, dogs also, but relevant to us and battle-the pies

some will phillips update, exploring options,no surprise there

cant watch or listen to those players/managers,take up well over half the show and give you nothing,so i think i watched about 11 of the 27 minutes

oh and that welsh that will go to the crows, how is he under 18?massive unit, him on Ari in the future will be an interesting watch

The AFL saved us from ourselves as Sheil is just starting to return via the VFL...
The deal was confused by the media multiple times.

As per what SOS himself told me.

We would have taken Shiel and his salary. For a band 1 compo for Gresh.

Essendon get Gresh and a second rounder. They lost the Shiel salary from their cap. Effectively they save money even paying Gresh and gain a second.

So, being assumptive here, but to take on Shiel and his salary we'd have to....

- Lose a second rounder (Hastie) but gain Shiel (broken) and take on his salary, gain a first rounder. I'd assume the Leake deal remains, so in reality we are upgrading Hastie for someone like Di Mattia or Edwards (or pehaps taking Leake with the extra 1st).

Instead, we couldn't do the deal, got Hastie & Collard.

Somewhat confusing way to look at it, but I'd rather Hastie, Collard and a mill in the cap over Shiel & whoever we liked at Pick 19.

Saved from ourselves yet again it seems (for 2 years in a row after our attempt to move Clark on).

Steele is a grown man & a professional athlete.

Reckon he'd be embarrassed that someone would think that he's stroppy because he's received strong feedback.

Once again, this is how unsubstantiated rumours (or to be more accurate, utter fantasies) become accepted as fact.

The anti-Lyon, ant-StK echo chamber is hard at work. Only a matter of time before Corn is onto the scent.

We'd have got the mil in the cap back end of next year.

Yet if we'd done half of the shit I've suggested we would have a flag by now or at least have stayed competitive. You sir are a pain pr0n addict.
