That and the Hannebery trade were way overs. Hannebery was basically a salary dump for them but we gave up a second. It was just dumb. No issue about taking the risk on either trade but there was no need to pay such a huge price.

Wasn’t it just a pick downgrade?

The pick we got for Hickey from memory

All this money we've supposedly got.... we need to look after the better players we already have.
Despite what's been said here l think the more likely reality is that the chance of a top 5/6 pick is a huge opportunity to do something meaningful for our midfield and if it means losing Battle then they're prepared to do it. An extra $100k is a drop in the ocean, so it doesn't make sense through any other perspective.

Begrudgingly, l have to agree with the strategy. I love Batts but he's easier to replace than it is to get a top mid and weakening our defence short term can be countered by improving in the midfield. Culturally, Batts would already be in the leadership group if he was cut out for it and l assume Wilkie and Sincs are the drivers there.

Typically for us l think we're overvaluing a good player through desperation. With Tassie on the way it's now or never to build a midfield or we'll be stuck for another decade.

Just read John Ralph's most recent trade article on the Herald Sun website, which went through the most likely movers this off-season. We were mentioned in a couple of moves (many we have already discussed).

OVERVIEW:

Dylan Shiel:
Ralph reckons he should have moved to the Saints last year, as he is now stuck behind countless younger mids like Hobbs, Tsatas and even Setterfield. He is out of contract this year. Would we be interested?

Tyson Stengle: Ralph reckons its a two-horse race between the Saints and the Cats. Stengle likely to get $2.8 over four years at the Cats, while he could get as much as $900k per year over 5-6 years at the Saints. Basically said he is player we should splash cash on. He also suggests we might have a few recruits this year - take with a pinch of salt I guess.

Nick Haynes: Basically said the Saints should look at Haynes if Battle and Howard are no longer at the club next year. Will not get too many games at the Giants due to their backline, and Ralph believes he has a year or two left in him. Would be an okay stop gap if Battle decides to go. However, Battle's departure probably changes the Stengle situation.

Josh Battle: Ralph reckons the Saints should be nervous that he hasn't resigned yet. Believes the Hawks are the most likely destination. Mentioned Battle's first child as a potential reason why the decision is dragging out. Nothing new to what we already know. Ralph believes we should do what we can to keep him.

Luke Parker: Ralph reckons Parker is in a weird spot where he wouldn't want to leave a club going well, but would be silly not to listen to other offers. Roos would offer the most money and security, but believes clubs like Melbourne, Crows and the Saints could offer something similar and would be more likely to play finals.

Overall: Nothing really different to what we have been discussing over the past couple of months, but it seems like the above deals could happen if the right conditions occur. Plenty to go under the bridge before anything happens.
Gee that's not overly exciting. Stengle is the only player there who isn't well over the hill and it would apparently cost us an arm, leg and kidney to get him. Adding experience for experience's sake would only take games away from our promising youngsters

No, I am interested in drafting and trade, what I am not interested in is some bitch continuously whining like a jet engine about stuff that hasn't happened! If you want to discuss hypotheticals, then discuss them, but stop the incessant whining about our poor FUTURE performance - there will be plenty of time to moan about stuff IF it actually happens.

List management is about future planning. If you can’t see a cliff coming you can’t plan for it. I told people that Lethlean was ****ing it up and you same brown nose campaigners whined then too. Put me on ignore if you can’t handle alternatives to your fantasyland shit.

It’s not that difficult to hang on to a few experienced players and bring in a couple. They don't need to be stars just pieces that fit just like Collingwood have managed to do. Also I’d argue it’s experience rather than age you can easily have guys under 25 with 100 games plus up and in their prime. We are pumping games into our youngsters and you can already see how in a year or two these guys will be the main drivers.

King 80 plus, Wang 50 plus, Henry 50 plus, Owen 40 plus, Windhager 40 plus, Sharman 40 plus, pho 30 plus, caminiti 28 and so on. How many others have already debuted from last years draft and looked very good I might add. It might be frustrating having played finals last year to take a step back this year but it was necessary imo and we haven’t really been that bad.

Anyway as I’ve already said I’m impressed with our youngsters and optimistic we’re heading in the right direction. Obviously we need to hit a home run with our picks this year and it’s a massive offseason for us but it looks like we’re finally in the range where the A grade mids are taken.

We failed to draft for years and now we are only focussed on it. You need a balance. Collingwood have a huge experienced list. Don’t think Bonner and Cordy instead of Pendles and Sidney are the same.

Nobody said we weren’t trading but it’s a not exactly clear at this stage who will be available. Every year throws up some surprises and this will be no different, clubs ask the question on many players who knows what will happen. Just as an example are we in the hunt for free agents, I guess that depends on battle and the offer he gets.

We’re not exactly light on for experience or quality with Sinclair, Wilkie, Marshall, Steele just off the top all of which are going nowhere and have 5 years left or more.

Had another chance to watch vic metro and it would be a big yes to Jagga there are a few others I’d love, Cole had a good game which is good news. The WA mids we’re good as well so do they temp WC or Fro enough to pick local.

More like the roaming around the ground CHF, not a full forward, that's Max. He is as fit as any big man in the comp and he knows how to position himself
I don’t believe Marshall can’t play forward I just don’t think it’s his best position but should we manage to turn up a monster 1st ruck he’d have no problem as a forward/ruck. Ryder was a bit of a surprise, everyone knew how good he was the surprise was how much he had left and romo has also come a long way since then imo.

Brad crouch and jack Hayes careers are over , unfortunately there bodies couldn't handle it .

Rowan Marshall will be staying but the unknown is battle .

The family that has links to AFL and been charged with rape is the youngest son of silvani

Silvani will also be stepping down as list manager.

Take that all in , I'll be back with more information

I agree you with you re Big Ro's a possibility up foward but shall we say Ro's goal kicking is....ummm....not the best.

He's not exactly flash in centre bounce rucking either but he absolutely excels as a traditional "follower"

Paddy was one hell of a [player.

As was said many many times.....how good would it have been if he came to us as a 25 year old.

He did some truly incredible pieces of play while with us and his rucking tap work......absolutely sublime.
