When the season is gone. I endorse playing the kids and working out who we should keep going forward.

I got nothing out of seeing last weekends win with the likes of Butler Ross Membrey all playing
Jesus, when we agree it’s staggering anyone would object.

Well maybe Ross and his merry men don't think the season is gone just yet .... bit like Carlton Sydney and GWS last year

As for pick 5 ... well there is a very real chance we finish higher up the ladder than where we currently sit

Anyway ... all aboard the tankwagon!!

It means you take your opportunity to get better however it comes. This year we could finish with a top 5 pick.

We should have learnt not to throw those opportunities away.
We’ve got two years to make hay before Tassie comes in.
Honestly, we’re just not that good - we may actually not have to tank.

5 games v top 8 opponents.

Though Suns are vulnerable. Dons and Cats at Marvel a chance if we have our fill line-up.

Trips to Brisbane and Adelaide to come.

I’ll give you wins v west coast and richmond

So if we win against GC this week which is a reasonable chance and moreso if Crouch comes back in?

Where we finish is also not just how many games we win, it is how many the cluster of teams above us win.

Pick 5 may be nice, but it could just as easily be pick 8 which then has us probably just short of landing the quality we so desperately need. We could go as high as pick 10.

PS. Battle has most likely already made his decision on whether he is going or staying.

With my idea Collingwood need to find a way to get pick 7 or better to match the Daicos bid to get him, whatever they need to do to make that happen is up to them.

Yeah I tend to agree with this. Live trading exists so give them 10 mins to make a deal and get the pick otherwise they lose the player to the club who bid. If they don’t want to risk it they can trade pre draft for an earlier pick and just take their guy with that pick.

Reports are Saints are keen to extend Butler. He won’t be delisted.
I understand that. I posted the clip.

But in a season where he has been injured for lengthy periods … twice. I’d rather he actually find form and we stick with Collard or give Hotton a go after 5 goals.

Could even just make teams nom any F/S eligible players before the draft too.

And you can see how dumb that would be

If we finish in no man’s land with pick 10. Might as well shut shop. The future isn’t getting brighter with another pick 10 - it would be like winning tattslotto if that happened.

We probably have sufficient players that can be taken off the list anyway.

Allison, Jones, Ross, Byrnes, Campbell, Cordy, Webster (Edit Membrey too) are all possibilities. Plus Hayes who is a rookie.
If Battle exercises his FA, that is another slot.

My recollection is that they did not nominate him because they couldn't get him so didn't see the need. It doesn't matter because there was no way they could ensure he ended up at North Melbourne, which was my point.

So they moved onto Horne-Francis, which while not exactly a success for North Melbourne to say the least, they managed (in a convoluted way in a very complicated draft ) to turn into picks 2 & 3 (which, after not being able to select Ashcroft, became Wardlaw and Sheezel).

I would suggest North didn’t nominate because they want the pecuniary benefit attached to pick 1 to go to their own draftee.

If that rule was changed so benefits went to the draftee selected by the club that finished in 18th place, irrespective of the actual pick, Daicos would have been nominated I reckon.

Any thinking around the draft needs to be considered against the backdrop of the AFL’s broader agenda to develop the sport in states with lower saturation (QLD & NSW) to maximise future revenue growth.

The AFL wants Queensland and New South Wales clubs to have a draft advantage, because they need those clubs to develop strong brands underpinned by success.

And the AFL have created a system where the surest way to assemble a successful team is via the draft, and to a lesser degree trading.

Father sons is pure lottery, and the theatre of it definitely has value in the football based entertainment industry. It would be a foolish decision to remove it.

Free Agency is also a pay to play raffle, but it is heavily tilted towards clubs with a bigger stage and a brighter spotlight, and the AFL is the production company that controls both. It’s not a fluke that marquee games like season openers, ANZAC, Dreamtime, always go to the biggest money spinners.

St Kilda suddenly morphing into a Victorian superpower is simply a redistribution of existing assets for the AFL. They really have no business impetus to help us win.

Maybe if they thought a second premiership for St Kilda would see a spike in entertainment ratings. Or if we were failing so badly it was affecting their business model.

The only way for us to assemble the best team in the now, is to improve our draft strike rate, and eke every bit from the group that we do have.

In the long term we need to grow the club brand into something that all industry talent aspires to be a part of.

We have a history peculiar to us, and we should weaponise it, not be embarrassed by it.

Pretty sure Webster will stay, and if Battle does go they’ll keep Cordy, who’s still pretty young, as back up in the twos.
Just my take anyway.

Yes agree, but it could easily happen given who are opponents are and where we play them.

However even though the Hawks % is poor, they have an easier run home than us. So Pick 10 is probably unlikely. But Pick 7 could easily happen if we pick our best team each week from now on in.

The Crows could just as easily crash and burn as win enough games to stay above us.

The Lions are a big chance to have a bad run home. They might knock us off in Qld, but we would bea good chance at Marvel.

So are our selectors going to tank by not picking our best team?

So again you are endorsing that we tank and not win any more games than we have to

Do you think the coaches and selection committee sit around the selection table and openly talk about tanking and losing games on purpose .... or is just a wink and a nod type thing?

Not saying they would all go as I doubt they would, just that there is a ready list of players that could go. Hence why I think Butler would stay. Moreso as we lack small forwards at present.

If we are rebuilding then having both Cordy and Campbell on our list is really wasting two list positions. Having such back up players makes good sense if you are in the window, but not at all if you are rebuilding.

Take Campbell, there are some young recycled rucks that other clubs have taken who look like they could become senior players. Next year Campbell's slot should go to such a ruck. Cordy is a GOP and that is not going to change.

Who’s playing key back in this team? Just Wilkie and Sinclair?

Adelaide + 2 = Richmond Doggies Hawthorn + us at Adelaide

Brisbane + 2 = us x2 Adelaide west coast + Suns and doggies Friday night, Essendon last game at the Gabba

Hawthorn + 4 = Richmond x 2 west coast + Adelaide + North

Us = Richmond West coast and suns at marvel

Wilkie And Cordy.
Give Keeler a go

Still have Arie who will get games and who they are looking at over in Adelaide + the rest of the league.

Turn whatever crap you get for Howard etc into the suns or lions first.
