I wonder if they have him earmarked for the back pocket role to lockdown small forwards? Jimmy Webster is reaching his twilight and with Ben Paton delisted we are bare in that area. Especially if Stocker stays in Midfield and I don’t think Stocker has the pace to keep up with the quicker small forwards.
You’d think the one spot we have young options in is HBF/BP, whether attacking or lock down. For the latter, we have Stocker, McLennan, Hofmann, I could be missing another. You’d think he’s definitely targeted for midfield time for speed and kicking. Whether he’s good enough to hold down a spot in the 23 is another thing.

I think some thought has to be given we are only 1-2-3 midfielders from having a bloody young midfield next year.
Some stage throughout last year, Steele was battling by himself
Jones, Hunter, crouch, , Dow, windy were all injured at the same time?

See it as insurance.

You can’t just play a team full of kids in the midfield.

No crouch next year, only takes to lose 1-2 older midfielders and we are in trouble.

At least this jack has had 3-4 pre seasons.

That he was the 23rd best player at Carlton and he struggled to break into a midfield that is extremely deep with a lot of senior, quality players.
Clubs don’t delist top top 25 talent on their list. Particularly young top 25 talent. Would be negligent.

As I said. Strange decision imo. Hope he goes well.

Jack Carrol is the Peatling / Kennedy trade replacement basically.. Another young mid with high potential to add to our depleted midfield.. Like you said, he has already had 4 seasons in the system, is hungry and didn’t cost us anything.. Crouch is now off the table you would think

I feel fine thanks. I just stated a simple fact and people are getting upset. Hope he kills it. Confident he won’t. I’d prefer the spot went to a tall or to an 18 year old from the draft. But hey, I understand the club can do no wrong in the eyes of many. I personally think it’s really strange decision. Bash away.

There's just no data at this point, he hasn't got enough exposed form at AFL level to draw a conclusion one way or another. As an unproven 21 year old he's no worse than a random 18 year old we'd take at pick 60, except that he has a few more pre-seasons under the belt so can potentially perform sooner rather than later. I don't see the problem with it.

Carroll is basically the same age as Nas but because he's a December birthday, he ended up a year earlier in the draft. If he can contribute then he's handy to add to that age bracket for us.

Our youth (next year ages)

25: Dow, Stocker
24: King, Sharman
23: Byrnes, Henry, Hall
22: Heath, Carroll, Wanganeen-Milera, O'Connell
21: Windhager, Owens, Caminiti
20: Keeler, McLennan, Phillipou, Schoenmaker, Collard
19: Garcia, Wilson, Hastie
18: a few draftees

Looks a reasonable shape to me, this is the future core which realistically is going to either help us challenge in 1-3 years, or fail and lead to a rebuild. May as well double down on it by adding more to these groups, imo.

After deeper thinking, I think the Carrol move could be a good one. Age 21, so the club will be hoping for some upside. It will make midfield spots more competitive and Sandy stronger, barring mass injuries.

Clearly the club saw more potential with Carrol over Hotton. One would think that Dow, Hall, Jones, Carrol and Byrnes can’t play in the same team. Some of those need big years next year.

100% if some of Hall, Dow or Carroll go on to become a 100-150 game players we have had a significant win.

While discussing Byrnes I would love to see him turned into a small defender this summer. The glimpes we had last season when he played on the dangerous small forwards was really impressed. I think he has a future down back, he is quick, dogged, solid over head mark, is not frightened to take the game on and his kicking has improved significantly. I think he could be a real sucess story taking the dangerous smalls each week.

I understand we have a plethora of small/medium defenders, but I see Byrnes as the natural stopper when Webster is done.

I watched the round 24 game vs Carlton again last night and noticed how good a job Stocker did tagging Cripps. He kept Cripps ineffective until Stocker hurt his groin half way through the third. Cripps exploded after that. If Stocker can lose some bulk and get his aerobic fitness up he may have a career playing that lock down role onball.

He's a mid. He averages 10 disposals at AFL level.
Starting as sub quite a few times might do that to his disposal count.

(Should probably delete this as I have been Sandra Sully’d at least 5 times!)
🙄

Some current mids need to lift their game this year.
Hall
Macrae
Carroll
One or two top ten mids.

Clark and Jones are well in the gun I reckon.
Carroll also fits the age profile of the list as well.

Don’t mind the pick up.
A few years under his belt and at the age where he might really start to shine. He’s shown a bit. If he has the will to do it, he can get himself a regular midfield spot.
Was sub often last year but played most of the season I think.
I’ve missed it somewhere, but how many years did we give him?

I wouldn't be surprised if we see Carroll training as a half back over the pre-season

We've lost Bonner and Paton with Hofmann coming in so there's still a void there. His versatility means he can also cover Hotton to an extent, while Max Hall is the direct replacement imo

Carroll reminds me a bit of Sheezel with the way he plays - they are both good sizes 185cm and aren't the quickest but have good ball use and ooze class. Both good at freeing their arms so have the ability to play midfield

Do you think Hugo Garcia will be a good player from what you've seen in the minimal quarter's he has played in his 9 games
