Would go along the Colin Funky Miller path of dropping a current Alan Border Medallist from the Test team.

To be fair the Alan Border Medallist is an award one on a player who plays the most across all three formats. You cant win the award playing a single format.

He shouldn't be in the Test team. At. All.

I don't think you can pin this on Starc and Cummins.

Our top order struggled until Smith and Head took advantage of a wet ball. Same thing happened in their innings, really. The ball stopped moving and batting became easier.

Bigger issue for me is selection. Why on earth would you risk it with Haze when you've got a fit and firing Boland in the wings? Especially when Marsh is clearly below his best. And the goat isn't quite there either.

Rough day. Sensed there was trouble brewing after ball one.

Just bat all day and tire out bumrah whose there only decent bowler
if we are batting all day, I doubt Bumrah bowls more than 10 overs. It will be Jadeja and part timers after lunch

Not sure it’s really the problem, Gough.
We should have been auditioning/getting games into another opener rather than gifting games to a bloke a couple of years past his best. Now we're left with a newbie and another bloke past his best and we're not really sure what to do about it.

Nup. Australia's tactics should be to get the last wicket, declare straight away, then send India back in. Time is of the essence. All out attack with what time is remaining. Australia batting again would be pointless.
Using that strategy gives India a shot at winning the game. Don't think they'd risk it, especially with depleted bowlers.

Lyon has always been an enigma for me. He has done a wonderful job as Australia's leading spinner for many years, but it seems as though when you would expect a world class spinner to exert influence on a game, he's not quite there. Seems to be more dangerous earlier in a game than later on.

Yep agreed. This is why I still rate MacGill (in my opinion) as the best spinner behind Shane Warne.

No team is going to voluntarily allow a chase of 180 with more than a couple of hours left unless it is the final match of the series and they need to win to draw it. If they do set a target assuming there are 98 overs it would be around 340 off 65-70 given they are a bowler down

How many more time does this stupid tactic of bowling short to tailenders have to backfire before we shelve it indefinitely? Would have been nice to have Boland firing the ball in on a dangerous length to the tailenders.
It’s a stain on the McDonald/ Cummins partnership. Gutless tactic

I think we need to find another Captain before the Ashes.

Great bowler, but he drops his bundle way too often when the heat is on as a Captain.

The current version of the Poms are pretty good at putting on the heat and his Captaincy in England left a lot to be desired. And hasn’t got better.

Admittedly a difficult day with a bowler down but for about the last 10 overs I simply couldn’t see how we were trying to get the last wicket. Which, ya know, might’ve given us a chance to win the game.

Head or Carey probably the only contenders in the side ATM. Which probably saves Cummins unfortunately.

Lyon's record is fabulous for an off-spinner, but yea he's never excited me as a viewer.

Come to think of it though off-spinners in general don't excite me.

Lyon is far too one dimensional. In a stronger era of Test cricket he wouldn't be getting picked for Australia and if he did then he'd be facing the likes of Lara, Tendulkar, Anwar, Jayasuriya, Ijaz Ahmed, Laxman, Kallis, Dravid.....they'd all be using their feet and hitting him back over his head.

Head was actually Redbacks captain for a long time before being in the test side.

As disappointing as it was to let India get past the follow on, that last hour was yet further proof (if any was needed) that Test cricket is by far the pinnacle of the game.
Similar thoughts, that last hour was great cricket and full credit to the 2 Indian tail enders although most likely costs us any chance of victory in this match.

Can't argue too much with his record. Root, Kohli, Kallis, De Villiers, Williamson etc, are outstanding types. 533 wickets, playing on the great off spinners graveyard in Australia he has been pretty good. One of very few bowlers to have taken 100 wickets in each of the 1st, 2nd, rd and 4th innings in Test Cricket.

But geez, doesn't it set up Boxing Day - it's gonna be huge.
