Understand where you're coming from, as I said, it's the rule. But a bit of common sense also has to apply. Everyone, including the umpire I'd think, knew he was going to the bench. He had changed course before the free was given. Blow the whistle tell him to get to the bench, and move on.

Yeah the problem with common sense is that it isnt common and it would set an exception to the rule. Just 1 more thing fans will tirade against when their team DOESNT get the common sense call.

Then you need to set a marker, how close to the bench does the kicker need to be for this exemption.

As boring as it is, the rules would need to get this kind of detail.

It is an interesting, and frustrating, debate as to whether rules should be rigid or allow for common sense and a 'feel' of how the game is going.

Consistency vs fairness.

One might ask the same of you, why are you criticising opposing views instead of watching the game

We might whinge about the standard of the game, the umpiring & the commentary,

But we would never, ever do the unthinkable

Change teams
Because I don't whinge that I rather do something else than watch the game , as for changing team what wrong with it ,players do that why not the supporter.

I like how Sam Gilbert looks as unreliable and shaky as ever, running aimlessly and selling his teammates into trouble, in his 13th AFL season.
It's a nice sense of stability in a changing world.

I never want to hear the commentators talk about a player or team drinking their own bathwater again. Roaming Brian is interesting but we don't need 'highlights' and montages of the 'funny gags of the guys throwing the microphone' and what not.

My partner and I just had our first baby a few months ago. She told me last night she has lost any sex drive she ever had. I may as well donate my tally wacker to anyone that needs it. If you know anyone who needs an extra inch let me know.
How very noble spirited of you. Before or after the "flattening"? I'm asking for a friend.

Rule just needs to be in protected zone running past v in protected zone interfering with kick/play. Think that's reasonably objective - did you guard space by putting your hands up, try to smother etc within 5? 10? meters of the kicker or did you just run past and make an effort to not interfere

These 3 sound so much better than the peanuts they keep putting up on Friday nights.

This players take over week has been a great change, shame that it has to end soon.
"The difference between generating attack from stoppages 30-40 metres out from goal vs 70 metres", "how going wide from centre stoppages limits the space for your forwards to lead into".

Would NEVER hear that sort of analysis from Brad Johnson and Jono Brown types...
