AFL Round 1 Richmond V Carlton

Coaches can only do so much, especially a first year coach too.

If a player isn't willing to play hard and committed football, there's really not much a coach can do. It doesn't help when the Captain of your club decides to have the match off in round 1, although Newman is one Richmond player who usually is consistent.

Long year for the Tigers, Carlton around the bottom of the eight again.

I agree, you would just hope he shows the tap and says to them 'There are boys in the twos willing to put their head over it, keep it up and you're out'. It always amazes me when you think how many hard at it guys are playing country footy who would love to make the AFL and you have blokes that are there not give it their all.

That was a horrible game.

I wouldn't be measuring the Blues' season off that match - Richmond were no way to gauge where they're at. Wait until Rd 4 after Lions, Dons and Crows and that will be a better test against quality opposition.

Did I mention how horrible that game was :(

Different teams for the season opener thanks....

Tend to agree there. From a Carlton supporters point of view, I find playing the Tiges round 1 a bit depressing and pointless. Win or lose the game doesn't mean much for our season. We should be playing Brisbane, Essendon or the Crows round 1, and the Tiges should have been playing Freo or the Dees round 1. The AFL likes the crowds these games draw, but their one-sided nature is not a good advertisement for the game IMO.

:)

I really couldnt get much from this match, Carlton clearly were the better side on the night but Richmond, although not absolutely hopeless, were not a real test. I still tend to think the first match of the season should be a grand final replay. There was a long haired blond guy from Richmond who caught my eye (just cant remember his name) he will be a good one for them in time.

Loads more Tigers there last night even though we were a fifteenth placed team versus a team in the 8.

Andy D. wants it to continue.

He knows Richmond supporters are loyal to the core.;)

Do you guys actually enjoy being thrashed each year Round 1? Wouldn't it make more sense to have a more competitive game against Freo or the Dees and gradually work your way into the season.

The Tiges are just using the famous Carlton brand to boost their attendances round 1. Carlton games always draw huge crowds and huge TV ratings. Think everyone is sick of these games being played first up. These thrashings aren't exactly a good spectacle for the game IMO.

:)
