AFL's fault if Lynch is injured. They continue to reward duckers and look what can happen.
Correct.

AFL pays frees for high contact because it is afraid of these injuries. If the player that's been injured initiated it then they need to be punished also. Don't just ignore high tackles when the umpires think you've ducked, actually pay frees against the player initiating it. Players need to be protected from themselves and the only consequences they understand is free kicks.

One final thing- IMO there is absolutely no one to blame for that injury other than Tom Lynch.
It's not unlucky, it's just plain stupid.

Why would you ever deliberately lower your head into an oncoming hip?

Just stupid. Risk becoming permanently disabled for a free kick- yep, totes worth it..

Before the PC police jump on me, I genuinely hope he is ok. But it doesn't make it any less stupid.

To be this is why the new rule of deliberately ducking the head is not a free kick as it is dangerous. The Adelaide player tried to get a free kick and he put himself in a really dangerous situation. If he was sure he could not have drawn a free kick he would not have done that.

It was almost an instinctive reaction. Plenty of players do it nowadays, the opponent has very few options. A really poor development in the modern game, stemming from "the head is sacrosanct" blanket directive.

Honestly- if he has a serious neck injury- what will the reaction be? Will the afl crack down on ducking?
Or more likely, will they make the game even more soft and punish those who bump in any scenario..
no more rule changes would be great, already a difficult enough job for the umpires

just change the interpretation. the purpose of the rules (safety) needs to be reinforced

No need to take pot shots at a player who could have been seriously injured ..

Game is starting to get into dangerous waters for Brizzle, need to get the next two goals to stay in it.

Lynch was already hunched over the footy. I think it was more a reflex action to protect himself. From the time he picked up the footy, what else could he possibly have done? Had he maintained his position or tried to get up (which he didn't have the time to do) he would have had his whole body taken out by the other bloke standing over him.

If it doesn't happen today (which by the sounds of what Mooney is saying, thankfully sounds to be the case) then it will happen sooner or later. Only a matter of time.

What would of been most unfortunate if today had of been the day, is that for all intents and purposes, Lynch's head was already down. He lowered it ever so slightly when he was getting close to the tackler (which may have been what caused the injury), but it was already down before then.

Take your blinkers off. Not even worth trying to argue he didn't duck. Got ball, stood up, saw oncoming player, lowered and ducked head.

Exactly what the afl said they would stop rewarding, but instead have encouraged via free kicks

Apart from one Blues supporter who got shot down, no one is taking pot shots at Lynch. I think we all hope he has escaped injury, let alone serious injury. Not a nice thing to happen

BUT

When people are instantly blaming the AFL for this and bringing Selwood and others into it, they need to be reminded that it all comes down to this - Lynch made the choice to duck his own head to an oncoming player. That's it. No need to take pot shots at JSelwood or Pendlebury, or the AFL either.

How about we don't blame anyone and think about the fact a guy's career could be ******* over???

I'm sure everyone is thinking of Lynch's welfare first and foremost, but it doesn't negate the validity of the debate. This isn't an isolated incident, what lynch did happens every game because of the interpretation of the high contact rule - players are purposefully putting themselves in a dangerous position because they think they'll win a free.

Thankfully, initial reports seem to indicate Lynch isn't badly injured. Hopefully any players watching this still get a wake up call, as does the afl.

All you people saying its his own fault are despicable. It was blindingly obvious he had no time to straighten up after he collected the ball, he was trying to brace himself for the impact, not win a free. But no, lets just all point at him and say he got what he deserved.
