Opinion Can Dustin Martin be the GOAT? (Answer: no)

Media commentators barely look past last week. Someone posted Gordon Coventry’s finals stats, they made Martin’s look almost pedestrian. Do you think Bucks saw his ‘big games’ to make that call? KB’s were phenomenal, the award itself is named for Gary Ayres. Everyone is looking for the next hyperbolic statement, Martin is the GOAT, no Daicos will be, no it’ll be Reid. Correct answer is it likely won’t be any of them if you were more interested in reality than headlines.

The only players in the last 50 years that have a claim to GOAT status is Matthews, Carey and both Abletts. Martin has a claim to greatest finals player with a few other contenders as well.
You're really going to play the 'scored his goals in a high scoring era' card? You? The guy who carries on about possessions in a high possession era or Brownlow votes in an era when Brownlow votes are more consolidated among a select group of midfielders than ever before? Priceless.
I think you are lost

This is the dusty thread , not the gaj thread .

I think Leigh is spot regarding Franklin/Ablett being the clear top 2 players of this century so far. A strong case can be made for number 1 for either of them. They are at the same elevated table. Most sound of mind neutrals would agree.

The controversial bit is obviously listing Dangerfield at 3. Certainly an unpopular opinion on BigFooty. Richmond supporters have told us to take Matthews words as gospel, so I guess this is what they are left with.

I'm in agreeance that there isn't a lot to separate Martin, Selwood, Pavlich, Pendlebury, Goodes etc on overall careers and their standing in the game this century. You could throw a blanket over at least a dozen of these types of players.

It's not the week to diminish a champion of the game in Martin, or for Richmond supporters to be furious that balanced discussions on where he ranks are taking place.

I am pretty comfortable with GAJ and Buddy as 1 & 2

Think there are several players with stronger claims to position 3 than Danger, of which Dusty would be one of them
I think the clear 1-2-3 is GAJ, Buddy and Judd, the order is up to the individual. Martin on the next line with Fyfe, Dangerfield and a bunch of others.

I would have Judd on the Martin, Fyfe, Danger line
Two Brownlows, two Leigh Matthews awards, all in different years, meaning there were four years when he was considered by some to be the best in the game, alongside six All Australians and five club champion awards. Compared to Martin with one Brownlow and Leigh Matthews award in the same year, four All Australians and two club champion awards. There's a clear gap between Judd and the rest, imo.

I would have Martin in the top 10 in the 21st century.

If I were lining up 18 year old versions of all the players who played most of their careers in the 21st century and then, knowing what I know now, with these players put in a draft I would go

Tier 1
Buddy
Ablett Jnr
Judd

Tier 2
Dangerfield
Martin
Kennedy (West Coast)
Hawkins
Scarlett
Rance
Gawn
J.Riewoldt
N.Riewoldt

So Martin is not top 3, but he is in the tier below with 8 other players, but where you rank him in those 9 players would be personal preference. I would personally take Scarlett or Kennedy over Martin as it is harder to find top quality KP players than top quality midfielders.

I'd add Pavlich and Cox to second tier, but otherwise it's a good list.

I didn't include them as they were drafted in the 20th century, though how you define 21st century would influence the list. I could see an argument for adding Cox, Pavlich, Goodes and Hall to the second tier list as I think they all played majority of their careers in the 21st century.

Players like Voss and Buckley though would count as 20th century players though I think.

Since 2000

Gazza Jr
Buddy

DAYLIGHT

then you can debate everyone else Judd, Dusty, Pendles, Selwood, N. Roo etc

This is not something that would be easy to do but I would love to have bigfooty run a mock draft, imagining every player who has been drafted since 2000 is 18 years old and in the draft pool. I would be fascinated to see who went where, with the one rule being in the mock draft (lets say with last years draft order) you are not allowed to pick a player that played for your own team.

Well done on 300 great games, no matter where I or others rate him he is the handful of players I could think of in my lifetime that I could gladly go to a game between the two bottom teams and be happy to be there purely because he is playing. A pleasure to watch and has genuine x factor there's probably 10 players in my life that I could go purely just to watch that player at least 1 time. He has built his own throne and let him sit in it for the week and put aside the comparisons and just enjoy the moment.

Not effusive enough. :tearsofjoy:
