To be the absolute GOAT, you would need to have done seriously significant meritorious things nobody else has ever done better. Dusty has done that. So he has some sort of case. Plenty of great players cannot say that.

If I were lining up 18 year old versions of all the players who played most of their careers in the 21st century and then, knowing what I know now, with these players put in a draft I would go

So Martin is not top 3, but he is in the tier below with 8 other players, but where you rank him in those 9 players would be personal preference. I would personally take Scarlett or Kennedy over Martin as it is harder to find top quality KP players than top quality midfielders.

Funny you name Scarlett, who IMO is the best FB of this century.
But I wouldn't even have him as the best defender in the team he was in.

3 Grand Finals, 3 x BOG. Dusty does not know what it is like to play a Grand Final without being BOG. Every other great player the game has seen that has played in 3 or more Grand Finals cannot say that. And I am pretty sure only McLeod of the other players who have played multiple Grand Finals can say it.

10 finals in those 3 finals series. Dusty was BOG or as good as in 8 of those matches. Thus, his 3 Ayres Medals.

But the runs of form in those seasons extend way back beyond that. From mid-season in 2017-19-20 combined Richmond needed to more or less win around 34 of 36 games to secure the double chance and win the Premierships in those seasons. Dusty was BOG in 18 of those 36 games(including home and away and finals matches.)

Then there is the 2017 season where he was the undisputed winner of everything that mattered, B & F, Brownlow, Coach's MVP, AA, Norm Smith, Ayres Medal, huge drought breaking Premiership. In the case of the Brownlow Medal and the Coach's MVP with record amounts of votes. Nobody has ever had a more decorated season in football and it is almost impossible to imagine anyone has ever played a better or more impactful season.

Then we get all the quirky finals scoring records.

10 Grand Final goals V the 3 x opposition teams 18 goals between them. Only Coleman in the whole history of Grand Finals has a slighter deficit of goals v opposition team goals in multiple Grand Finals, and Coleman only played in 2.

Highest Goals + goal assists per final in the finals that led to flags of any player this century, both outright and by an even bigger margin when expressed as a % of overall goals in the matches. Whilst playing mainly midfield.

But probably the most unbelievable thing is Dusty's run of 19 goals 2 behinds in finals in the middle of all of this. When you look at the actual 19 goals, almost all heavily contested and many from difficult positions or distances, some with his back facing the goals, in such big matches. It is difficult to work out how he could only miss twice in all of that.

The absolute greatest of great players achieve amazing and unique things in the game. Dusty is one of those.

In the discussion to be the goat in some peoples mind and absolutely arguably the greatest big game/finals player of all time but most of us know absolutely **** all about him but it seems that all the personal accolades aren’t what drives him

Ultimately it’s just wanting to win games on the big stage that drives him another thing that separates him from his peers is also he’s one of those players who never really plays for frees, no doubt he will do a sneaky jumper hold in 1v1 marking contests like most do but can’t say I’ve ever seen him try and milk some head high contact or fly the flop when he feels hands in his back
