Cripps has a terrible record returning after a layoff. The only thing I can think of is that Simpson is itching to release Rioli in the midfield. The only way I can rationalise the twin shocks of Xon out, Cripps in.

At least Naish wasn’t dropped. I guess they’re saving that one for when Gaff ‘needs’ to come back on managed minutes.

Only thing that really matters is Rioli continues to play. Win or lose, the game will be worth watching.

Excited to see Williams & Edwards get the responsibility, good luck to them.

How is Cripps coming straight back? If it was good enough for Yeo to play WAFL (and Shuey last year) why not him?
Crip is only ever damaging when he is super fit and playing his high pressure game. Makes no sense not building his tank in WAFL

Williams for Naitanui is forced as is HEdwards for McGovern

Rotham for Hough I don’t understand. Thought Hough played well and barely noticed Rotham in the last quarter when he came on to replace LEdwards. It also makes our backline look a little top heavy

Cripps for Waterman. Whilst I’m a fan of Waterman I don’t think he’s been playing well enough to hold his spot do his omission is fair enough. Whether Cripps is the right replacement see below

Shuey, Yeo, Kelly for LEdwards, O’Neill, West is a significant improvement no matter how well those 3 young guys played against Collingwood- on paper. Bringing all 3 back plus Cripps in the same game is a substantial risk given they’ve all had interrupted preparations

It feels like one too many changes and I think we could have give O’Neill another run to see how he goes with a little bit more quality around him. Hopefully I’m wrong and it doesn’t bite us on the arse.

That said it does feel good to be looking at team changes and being able to say there’s a couple of players genuinely unlucky to be omitted and there’s pressure on the 22 named to play well enough to hold their spots

Yeah agree with most of this. One or two less I reckon would be palatable. Hough over Rotham and XON over Cripps or even Nelson and I reckon everyone's happy.

Dropping all off West, XON (after a career best game) and Hough all in one go after one of our best ever wins is pretty tough to swallow altogether.

Guys coming in better hope they turn up or the reception is going to frosty come the end of the game I reckon

All i'll say is....

The beast that is Elliot Yeo is BACK.

Would really have gone with just 2 coming in out of Yeo, Shuey, Kelly - don't care which two, history has shown that bringing multiple of these three mids in at once does not work. Keep O'Neill in and send a message that a spot in the side is yours if you earn it (obviously that isn't true of our MC though)

Give Cripps a week in the WAFL as well, he's by no means a walk up start anymore - am ok with dropping Waterman but I'd rather keep the extra mid or give Kelly more forward time than rush Cripps in.

As others have said these changes eventually were inevitable, and if this was a final it'd be the right call, but doing them all at once now indicates a concerning perspective from the decision makers on where our list is at and what the priorities should be.

For everyone referencing the Bulldogs game and our midfield being cooked - we were blown out of the park early and it was all over by Q3.

Last week's midfield was appalling, I don't think we had any choice but to ditch them for a bunch of All Australians.

Cripps seems strange but he is to replace Waterman which makes sense. SPS was probably a better option as he is match fit and can rotate through the middle. Then again, we already have Rioli and JJ to do that, so we have a fair bit of cover.

I reckon we get it done by 20 points.

Very disappointing for Hough to be cut when he's neither a mid or forward. Unless he legitimately needs a rest?
XON & West a bit stiff too.
I would've gone with Langdon rather than Hough just for a like for like change for Cripps.
Glad that JJ has enough credits to keep his spot.
Kinda surprised he didn't make way for SPS, but happy about it.

its got the vibe of last year when we beat Carlton at the SCG with a young vibrant team and then bought a heap of older players back at once and got flogged by bulldogs at home.
Except Carlton were a piece of crap and Bulldogs were leading in the grand final half way through the 3rd. Main similarity is that Collingwood are a piece of crap and Sydney are looking like making finals.

Lets not forget we lost inside 50s 60-40 outside of the hyperbole of career best and break out games

Good changes apart from Hough going out for Rotham, who's been trash this year.

X'On did pretty well last week but even a quiet Shuey or Kelly game is better than that. People are also overlooking how he started hot and faded across the match. This is when he was playing 100% on-ball: surely we know by now how much he goes missing when the ball isn't pushed in his direction. West moved pretty well last week but absolutely butchered the ball.

We have brought back three genuine A graders to bolster a very depleted midfield further damaged by NN being out.
I don’t see the alternative, keeping one in the WAFL for a week, what purpose?
Rough on O’Neill granted, I would have liked to see him retained. But somewhat of a wry laugh after he was written off pre season and then after one good game people are melting about his non selection.

If we run out of legs it so be it. Pull the Band-Aid off. There is also the possibility of late changes. I’m not pleased about Cripps straight in, he needs to repay the faith. And likewise for Rotham. Big opportunity for him to step up. If he cannot, bring Hough back in.

This surprised me because it used to be the reverse but it does highlight how Nic hasn’t had his usual influence

And more reason to like Dixons game

Suggested as much in another thread: Strategy - Injuries, COVID and Now NicNat - what do we do for the rest of the season

Outside of stoppages Naitanui has been little more than a witches' hat and opponents are making use of the effective extra they gain elsewhere on the field.

Dropping all 3 of West, Hough and XON together is what grates after last week. Especially when we've been here before.

Like I said, the guys coming in wanna perform. I get the quality coming in, but even just one of Cripps, Rotham or Nelson out for a Hough or an XON (who finally put together a quality game and should be rewared for it) would makes it easier to swallow

Would've easily preferred Hough over Rotham but who knows the rationale behind the decision.

I have my doubts about Exxon long term, but what more did they want him to show? I think some on here are overvaluing how great his game was, but it was absolutely a good game and the absolute upper limit of what anyone could reasonably expect when he was sent out there.

Comfortably his best game for the club - whether his best is good enough is another chat. We picked him out of desperation, he did as well as you reasonably could to grasp that opportunity.

Most of the changes are fine. Yeo ramped up in the WAFL, Shuey ramped up for weeks. I’m not concerned about them being underdone. Gov and NN out, the changes make themselves.

I’d rather Exxon play for Waterman and be hidden on a HFF, to the tune of eight touches and maybe four centre bounces as a token gesture, than for him to be dropped entirely.

Hate the message. You did as well as anybody could have expected but we also won’t play you next week.

Keep in mind we’re still missing Sheed and Gaff (though Naish was an unexpected boon there). With that said, why did we give Exxon a contract? He’s on the list purely to play when we’re down to our final options? We have to be missing Yeo, Shuey, Kelly, Gaff, Sheed for him to get a gig? Even if he performs as well as he reasonably could we don’t think that’s good enough for a longer look in the team?

Shocking for morale to not back him in, and if I’m being too emotional about it as this is a business, shocking business decision to sign someone they clearly have no intention of using or developing.
