Most AFL footballers these days have their mouthguards made professionally by dental technicians after their dentist has taken a mould....though I guess it wouldn't be out of the question for the ancillary staff to carry some of the old boil and bite type for cases like Murphy to use as a one off.

These days? My first properly moulded mouthguard would have been in u13s in about 1985. The next one I got, just out of school from memory, had imprints for my bottom teeth as well.

In fairness we dont know if players have forgotten it in the past and maybe the Club did have them?

I do MMA and my Club has spares laying around especially needed for competition. Mind you its not free and you will be surprised just how many people do forget.

I always wash my mouth guard before training and put it into my bag, its a routine I get into so I dont ever forget it. Mind you the ball guard is the first thing of importance. But I digress.

I forgot jocks a few times, playing with boxer shorts unsuccessfully trying to be hidden under footy shorts. Only a fashion issue, whereas at cricket there’s few worse feelings than padding up and grabbing the box and just as you’re about to ram it into place, “oh ****”. Definitely a more tentative innings than normal.

He’s logical, has loads of experience being extremely average in every non key position role on the ground. Wouldn’t want Jones missing 2 weeks straight as well you’d think, but we’ve done that to kids on the cusp in the past.

Shows the value of Hamish. We do also have Lynch, Milera, Doedee, Fogarty, Jones and McHenry as first rounders on the list but not playing.

Pet hate, players that get injured during a bye. So annoying

Seems to happen every year for us as well! We come out of a bye shorter than we go into it. Also tends to be nuisance or bizarro injuries coming out of it.

I would expect the medical staff to carry almost everything that a footballer may need to use during a game.

They do have some, he didn't ask for one, took the risk. It isn't the club that is unprofessional but the player but hey, lets not blame the person who actually had control of the situation. Or are you expecting the club to check each player to make sure they have mouthguards and shoelaces tied?

No not at all. I was a little surprised when he didnt wear a mouth guard if offered as has been his practice, the fact that the Club had spares is great.

Personally I have always felt much more comfortable wearing a mouthguard while fighthing or in competition as you get used to and feel comfortable with it on, so I was surprised he either didnt take the option up with the Club of using one or if the Club didnt have a new one laying around. If it didnt, yes I would think its unprofessional, that wasnt the case so its the end of that chapter.

To not have spare equipment for players in a professional sport. Yes I would consider it unprofessional of the Club. That isnt the case, so there is nothing to see.
