We really need Butts to be the sub, but Nicks’ comments about him needing to ‘regain form’ makes me think he’s playing SANFL

I’m getting more and more worried we’ll see a Callum Chambers performance from Samson Ryan

I suspect that there is some smoke and mirrors re Butts. He has struggled with a dodgy shoulder during the preseason. It would not surprise me if he has to have an operation. Having a dislocating shoulder is not ideal for a player whose strong suit is spoiling.

Assuming Butts is unavailable due to a combination of injury and poor form, who is next up?

1) Worrell might work (although he is more a third tall) but he is several weeks away.
2) Keane is the long term answer but he would run out of juice by half-time.
3) Borlase would be a “heroic” selection.
4) Himmelberg or ROB? Really “heroic”.

I suspect that Doedee is the best of all the poor options.

Sholl was a predictable inclusion if we didn’t want to move player positions too much. Doedee replaces Butts, Hinge replaces Doedee, Sholl replaces Hinge.

I want to see Thilthorpe in the Ones but The Berg was OK last week. It’s hard to see how we can play both Thilthorpe and The Berg if both Tex and Fog are available.

Berg is definitely the best prospect in terms of developing our contending side. TT is depth quality, so no ping being patient with him developing in the 1s.

Butts needs form and confidence

He was inconsistent in 2022, some good games but some very poor games as well, this has been followed by an interrupted pre-season.

Lynch is Richmonds only genuine KPF, Jack just doesn’t play that way anymore

Not to mention, most defences are going into to games with shorter more mobile backline, in particular players that can play either tall or short

Murray, Doedee and Max are the 3 players on our list -and Worrell that emphasis this new prototype key defender

Geeking won a flag with a shorter back line against a taller Sydney forward kine

Not sure why we needed to draft both Bond AND Dowling when we really needed to go after another tall. Especially when we were tracking Tyler Brown at the same time.

We don’t seem to understand that quantity doesn’t cover absence of quality. They genuinely believed they were addressing the weakness that is our midfield.

He said he’s been carrying a shoulder all pre season, would have thought a rest is best

Here for the melts

Given you rarely post an opinion of your own pre-selection, there’s simply not any other reason that you would be here. Even when you have, it can reverse the very second that selection contradicts you. “Even I’ll melt if Billy is selected”. 15 minutes later, “Nope, you’re wrong, Billy’s selection is an astute call”.

The way Nicksy said it though is that he had shoulder issues over the preseason but he’s all good now, but it has effected his form and confidence.. so he needs to go back to the sanfl and find some..

reacon he‘ll be playing SANFL.

if not they would’ve taken him out “injured“ not “omitted”.

having “omitted“ next to your name is a bit of a slap in the face..

Doedee gets man-handles by anyone bigger than him when 1vs1. He needs to play a roaming role in order for him to have most success. Was good in such a role in the first half last week before becoming restricted after being assigned to a KPF

I really like MM as a prospect, but assigning him to an experienced KPF in his second game is also a disaster waiting to happen IMO

I’m no fan of Butts’ form right now, he’s lost all confidence in the past eight or so months. But maybe it says more about our lack of addressing quality depth in this area (given Keane isn’t ready yet)? Given the types of players Doedee and MM currently are, it’s not the same as working with a versatile defence yet - we still need to look to maximise each guy’s strengths. The Cats won a flag with four guys above 190cm in their defence - you need a mix of mobility and size

FWIW I’d be fine with using Worrell as a bigger intercepting CHB type, it’s a shame he isn’t fit

👍 I took it as he is still carrying it, my fault

Yeah, well he is pretty handy at stoppage clearances, a mid that is actually on the move when he takes the ball from a stoppage...perhaps you've missed that?

It would be nice to play him to his strengths to see what he’s actually got. This defensive focus small forward role has always been absolutely stupid. The reason that we want that aspect is that we’ve watched the great small forwards apply elite pressure. But the thing is that it’s because they’re totally focussed on getting the pill that has them close enough to tackle when they don’t.

Murphy has always looked capable in the too few times he’s been in and around the stoppage.

I’m shocked to be sitting here with Milera injured yet again.

Another three years on contract - yep, never delivered so far.
I’m actually glad he’s out and Parnell is in. Think that should have been the change in the first place. Milera should have been omitted.
