Jonas has always been overrated on this board IMO, but even given that he'd struggle get a game as a KPD in almost any other side. Old, slow, short, possibly the most predictably bad kick out in the league. Shouldn't be Captain and even with Pasini out I wouldn't play him, he's gone downhill that much.

what does jonas do? he takes kickouts sometimes. he doesn't intercept mark, you rarely see him in a 1 on 1 contest. i just.. dont know.

No we dont. Jonas doesnt play on talls anymore. In fact he doesnt play on smalls. He just plain stinks.
People must have forgotten when Clurey got absolutely destroyed by Hawkins back in 2020. They've got some bloke called Cameron up there too now. Playing only 2 talls is suicide.

Jonas absolutely does intercept mark. It's something he does pretty well. He's no Aliir but nobody is. Jonas leads our team in intercept marks at this stage of the season.

I agree that Jonas is limited because of his height and pace but he reads the flight of the ball well and has very strong hands in defence. I know stats aren't everything but Jonas currently has our best contested defensive loss % out of our defenders this season, only losing 2 1-on-1 contests out of 20 this season.

He's been the general back there in the last 2 years where we had the 1st and 3rd best defences in the league, and we've currently got the 4th best defence this season despite our horror start. He gets a lot of stick on here but I think he's pretty important to the way we play, and i'm not sure we'd be as good running with MacKenzie, Clurey and Aliir despite them all having some advantages over him as defenders.

(Also i'll again state that a 1 on 1 contest even occurring is a defensive failure. If everything is running as intended, there should never be a defensive 1 on 1, we should have a numbers advantage or be taking an intercept mark relatively uncontested. Much like how a forward line contested mark is a ball movement failure, success is an uncontested mark on the lead)

(I'll also note that we have the 4th best defence in 2022 despite playing a proper forward structure that's set up to score instead entering the F50 like stupid cowards like we've seen for a decade Hinkley you f***ing idiot. Seriously how does this fraud not die of embarrassment every fortnight when his salary goes in)

I like Jonas, people forget easy

It was apparent on the weekend against North that our defence was clearly lacking any sort of leadership.
The first half in particular was chaotic - no one seemed to know who was meant to be doing what.
We looked totally disorganised and a half decent opponent would have capitalised.
Jonas definitely brings stability to the backline.
Because he doesn't play a particularly flashy style I think he gets underrated a bit.
The last few seasons, and even this year our defence has been pretty reasonable and Jonas is a big part of that.

I absolutely wanted Jonas (or failing that clurey) to make room for pasini, but there’s no way I want to be rolling into any game with only 2 key defenders. It hamstrings us in terms of matchups and what we can do with burton.

Jonas is having a mediocre year to say the least. Clurey is playing fb, the deepest spot at the back and taking the best kfs most of the time. Alir is our sweeper, playing the hotspot, standing under high balls against forward lines that are putting most of their planning during the week into what to do about him.

And Jonas gets the easiest job of the 3 every week. He should be cleaning up. By no means has he been horrible, he’s done his job, no more no less. But that’s a shitful thing to say about your captain and a player who’s guaranteed a game week in week out since before I could remember.

In any case, due to our key defender stocks Jonas is a must pick any week he isn’t handing the ball to the opposition on the goal line and saying “here kick this my good friend”.

All the more reason we have to hit key defenders hard in the next two drafts.

Play only 2 tall defenders and watch Aliir get dragged out of the play and be totally useless.

Recipe for disaster.
What did we do in the qualifying final last year? From memory, McKenzie stood Hawkins and broke even, Jonas stood Cameron and crushed him, and Aliir violated Rohan.

Happy to do the same again this week, but swap McKenzie for Clurey?

Clurey isn’t half the defender McKenzie is, unfortunately.
