Every player has strengths and weaknesses. This may not be Gaff's strong point but he has other positives. Would be great if he attacked the ball like Waters but no player is perfect.
If Gaff attacked the ball like Walters he'd play about one game a year ! (He'd be out injured for the rest of the season, he just doesn't have the build to play the way Waters does )

I'm going to be optimistic and hope that Masten is in.

Out: Naitanui (form/injury/justgethimout), McGinnity, Butler, Colledge (he's been ok but a bit slow and form doesn't warrant selection, Schofield (I don't want 4 tall defenders)

In: Shuey, Glass, Masten, Hutchings, Rosa

Bennell Mackenzie Glass
Yeo Brown Ellis
Rosa Priddis Gaff
Wellingham Kennedy Masten
Cripps Lycett Darling

Cox Selwood Shuey

I: Sheppard Sheed Hill
S: Hutchings

E: Schofield Tunbridge Colledge

If Masten isn't available, Hutchings into the 21 and Tunbridge as the sub.

if you think we are soft defensively then you dont know much about our team, you must be thinking about the 2012 port team. I reckon we are gonna cut you guys up on the wide expanses of Subi. Ports weakness is getting first hands on the ball, if we win there we nearly always win easily, focus on that boys. Personally i think you guys are ripe for the picking and those are sweet apples

Soft defensively??? Actually watch Port play a lot of our scores are forced thru tackling pressure and turnovers.Gonna be a belter of a game.

Why drop him and bring him back in? Just drop him.

It will be a tight game i think, what happens in Geelong stays in Geelong.. toughest road trip in the game

Whoever said Port are defensively soft is on the moon juice, two good midfields should be a cracker

Just watch North game against you and you will see you are defensively soft.

Like us, you have played 3 easy beats and one against quality and lost. Don't get carried away with your form.

I ******* love these overreaction rage posts every time we lose a game. The passion is brilliant, but if we literally threw our players under a bus like we figuratively do here, JD, Joshie and Easy wouldn't have too many team-mates to play with.

The frustration is always there, especially in regards to our weakness in the midfield, it just comes to the surface when we lose.

Yeah the midfield crap has been going on long enough
Until it picks up I think people are going to get more and more upset each time it's short comings are pointed out (brutally) by the better teams.
I think the frustration is made worse by it beating up on bad teams.

Lets track that shall we forget ladder positions now.Round 1 most people were tipping Carlton,we got them, against Adelaide a lot were backing the Crows, dunno why those 2 were heavily backed but they were, Brisbane we did what all good sides do and buried a lowly side, if we bring that tackling ferocity and defensive pressure on Saturday they will surprise you.Against North we blew our chances, missing easy goals, our best player on the day pulled a hamstring, and Wingard went down also.In the end North's tackling pressure got us and we didn't handle it as well as we can, but with a minute 20 to go if Impey kicks straight its a 2 point game with a minute to go.Soft defensively had nothing to do with it it was a cracking contest between 2 quality sides the result didn't go our way.I expect a similar game Saturday night with your mobs potential ins, and it being at Subiaco. It's our pressure and tackling that we feed off and it contributes to probably 70% of our scores.Either way it should be a beauty I'm going to the game and can't wait for it.

These statistics aren't as black and white as you think as you have to factor in Port Adelaide's terrible form 2012 and earlier and the effect of the new coach and game from last year, but it's interesting to note that looking back as far as 2008, we haven't won at Patersons Stadium.
I'm also not sold on our game being too effective on the great expanses of the ground. We generally seem to allow the other team to switch quite easily whilst putting numbers behind the ball and trying to make the kick into the F50 difficult, causing the turnover and running it out in numbers. I'm not sure if this will work as well at Patersons than other grounds.
For me, as mentioned above by some other Port Adelaide supporters, I think it will come down to a midfield battle. Port struggled in the first quarter against Carlton and Brisbane and throughout the game against North Melbourne when our midfielders couldn't get out hands on the ball and let their midfielders off the hook. We seem to allow these 10 minute patches where the opposition midfield gets on top and we don't seem to have an answer.
I concede that we still seem to struggle against the smaller forwards (Betts, Lindsay Thomas, to a lesser extent Ellard so far this season), but to the WCE fan saying our defense is our weakness probably hasn't seem to much of us play as Trengove, Bobby Carlisle and Jonas have been rocks for us.

Bring on the game. I think it will be a great measuring stick for both teams.

I think the balance of our side has been wrong.

We can not carry 3 ruckmen. We dont need another tall forward - get Tunbridge in there (if fit) who can also provide some pressure and possibly rotate through the middle. Alternatively when Lecca is fit he can do the same. NN is clearly not right - he either gets rested / surgery / or dropped to the WAFL. Cox is also walking a tightrope. It would be an unpopular decision, but at some stage we should trial Lycett and Sinclair - these two would offer more around the ground than the other two atm. Cox gets more hitouts but they are not particularly effective.

Similarly at the back - we dont need Schofield and Glass. We possibly dont need either if we have MacKenzie and Brown already who are both stay at home backmen.

I think the problem with Simmo is that he hasnt been able to make the hard calls so far. He needs to make unpopular decisions if he is to get the balance in our side right.

In: Glass, Masten,Shuey,Rosa,Tunbridge
Out: Butler,Colledge,Mcginnity,Lycett/Nic Nat,Schofield

If Nic Nat is not 100% bring in Sinclair or Keep it Lycett in. We can not have 3 ruckman playing its too much.

If Masten is not 100% bring in Hutchings.

I wouldn't mind Schofield still in but would like to see Tunbridge at some stage.

Bennell Emac Glass
Yeo Brown Ellis

Rosa Priddis Gaff

Wellers Darling Masten
Hill JK 2nd ruck

Cox Scooter Shuey

Bench: Sheed, Shep, Cripps, Tunbridge

Now that is WAY better squad than last week.

If they want to keep up with College instead of Tunbridge im happy with that as long as we are blooding a player or 2.

I don't think they are defensively soft, I think Port just rely a bit too much on Boak and Wines on the inside. Boak got hurt during the game and struggled through it while Wines was okay but didn't have his greatest great game. Port and Crows have been a bit vulnerable the week after a Showdown, no excuse but historically the teams don't play that great the following week.

Should be a good game, if the Eagles can put the pressure on the inside I think it will be a close contest.

Shuey, Masten, Rosa and Glass. Are they all back this week? If so, I think this will give the Eagles a huge advantage and this will significantly strengthen your side. I reckon the Eagles will win this game at Patersons. Really looking forward to watching this one. It's going to be a great game. :thumbsu:

Out: Priddis, McGinnity, Butler, NN, Colledge, Lycett, Priddis, Priddis, & Priddis

In: Hutchings, Tunbridge, Rosa, Shuey, Sinclair, Masto (if fit), Glass & Class.

No more 3 rucks crap, get some runners in the side and some size & speed in the midfield. No more bombs to the forwards, spot up targets and work our way in with better kicking. All of the above..

Decided to re-watch the game to really look at Gaff's game. First half was terrible, so much so that Dermie and Dunstall commented on him being half-hearted and needing to force himself to be harder at the ball. Second half was better, but he made a few mistakes. The majority of his possessions are uncontested, making dinky (though accurate) kicks around the back half. Just doesn't do much with it IMO. He's missing tackles and getting killed in the contest. He's gotta put some weight on, and find some aggression. It was good to see him in the packs amongst it in the second half.

Wellingham's kicking was absolutely atrocious as well. He needs to work on being more consistent. On the plus side, I thought Sheed and Colledge were great, especially Sheed, and they deserve to keep their spots.
