Yeah that is why we need Jetta in the team. At least he provides Simpson with a ready made dropping option in case we loose. If you recall, Simpson responded to the very bad round 2 loss against Hawks last year by dropping Jamie Bennell who played as small forward. He was recruited as a small defender but they turn him in to small forward that preseason. Now Bennell may not have worked but he never played for WCE again.
I think Bennell's biggest problem was that as a small defender he wasn't very accountable for his opponent. The fact that guys like him and Morton were even on our rookie list to begin with is the bigger issue, it's lazy recruiting and speaks to the general mindset of our club.

Maybe in the cold light of day West Coast should tread water untill the bye where hopefully a few important players could return .

Probably two or three changes still though , Partington can find the ball and may have earnt an opportunity plus a couple of other changes .
Petrie into the team will be good for team moral .

Outs: Masten, Mutimer, Barrass
Ins: Partington, Lamb, Schofield
I'd give Barrass one more week. With Patton, lobb and Cameron we probably need three talls tbh. I'd bring in schoey as well and play him on Cameron. Let Barrass know that he's on the edge and he might do a decent job on Patton.

Don't understand the Masten for Partington. Partington is more of an inside type that's not a strong link up player as masto and is physically not there yet. His tackle numbers for an inside mid is pretty pathetic as well.

Masten out!
Just watch his possessions in the defining 1st qtr, so sick of people defending this bloke. Look how many brownlow votes he has accumulated over his 10 year career as a mid. Tells you a fair bit about the quality of the player.
Complete spud, let' move on.

Noticed last few weeks JK has been resting on the bench for parts of each quarter. For the past 3 or more seasons he has basically played 100% game time and was never included in rotations. When he is benched the forward line loses structure. Injury concern?
Was disappointed Mitchell never stood up more yesterday, all that experience and knowledge and looked rushed with ball in hand.
Priddis has been really, really been poor this year, does need to be dropped.
Ins-
Jetta
Partington
Lamb
Petrie

Outs
Priddis
Lecras
Darling
redden

Lecras has had enough opportunities and Darling needs to go back and learn to play thr game at 100%.

So many players deserve heat before Masten.

Is Nelson ready to come in?
If so, he comes in for some speed. Priddis (rested) Mitchell/Redden can play his role.
Scott Thompson of Adelaide not playing any games this year is doing Adelaide wonders.
You can still learn from Don Pyke without him physically being at the club...

Hill comes in for Mutimer. Had a taste, now can go back to WAFL and work on it further.

Emac/Schoey in for Barrass.
Can't have Yeo Gov and Barrass all playing intercept marks down back.
Barrass is losing his one on ones. Getting out bodied and positioned.

Regarding Petrie/McInness, I thought Fraser did pretty well around the ground linking play.
Again, no point bringing someone in who will retire next year unless he provides the team with a major advantage.
Let's see how Fraser develops in the AFL with some more continuity. Did well in 2015 and is also doing well this year.

He's a common factor Throne in our losses.

Panics under pressure too easy, gets caught holding the ball and rushes his disposal.

He epitomises everything that is soft about this club currently.

Our real issues lay with the cake and not the cream.

Agree regarding Bennell and our recruiting in general. That Bennell example was just to show what Simpson usually does in response to huge loses.

For a guy who took us to a grand final with a makeshift defence in just his second season, Simpson makes some very baffling selection decisions. I don't particularly like Luke Beveridge but have to admire him for the way he stick to his convictions and make unpopular selection decisions - results show that this attitude works more often than not.

Yeh I know what you mean, I'm only expecting a token change this week.
Definitely agree with you on the selection decisions, quite a few that don't make any sense at all.

At least when he plays, he plays with a bit of heart and has that but of mongrel in him that hates to lose. Going on yesterday's result I can only come to the conclusion we have too many players who don't give a **** !!
Yep too right there mate that is it we have all the core ingredients. But lack
(a) Dedication
(b) Application
(c) Intensity

if Collingwood can beat hawks being 43 points down I don't know what happens to us

To me, the ability to drop players suggests Beveridge has more freedom when it comes to selection that Simpson. You see often 'favourites' come back quickly after injury, and other 'favourites' are selection locks regardless of form.

Going back a few years Woosh was notoriously hands off during a couple of trade periods. It may be our club works via committee too much without allowing the coach, who is generally the face of the club, to run the ship as he likes.

Without knowing the workings of either club I'd suggest Freo was the same in some manner, until whatever happened after round 2 forced a change of policy.

I haven't agreed with a few of the changes this season - dropping Hill this week and picking McInnes last week being the most recent examples - but I can't think of any that haven't been able to be explained.

Rumour on the radio was that the philosophical change at Freo was board related, Lyon supposedly said at the end of last year he was going to focus on the youth this year and when he just started playing the same spuds again to start off this year he was given a not so gentle reminder

Schoey has generally done the job on Cameron in the past. He's never played particularly well against us either.

The problem we have here is EP has a bye this week, so whoever is dropped doesn't get a chance to work on anything. You could dump Barrass and get him to work on the spoil/mark or attack the footy/stay the man decision making, but he's not going to get a game to work on it. I'd argue last round was the time to do it given Barrass was showing signs of uncertainty against the Dogs.

The next issue is we're back in the warm, safe, comfort zone of Subiaco again this week. Which means all our rubbish travellers will be back on fire. There are certain players who have poor form on the road, and there's not a whole lot we can do except not pick them for away games. We then run into the problem of playing Gold Coast in our next away game, which again makes it hard to judge form against good sides. There's also a chance we rest players for that game given it runs into the bye, then 2 home games meaning anyone who misses the Gold Coast game wouldn't have to travel from now until the game on July 1st.

There's another thread about NN being out, and where we'd be. It'd be interesting to run the same comparison with some of our other walk up starts taking a rest.
