Rockliff is a significantly better footballer by both hand and foot. His first two games of the season when Wines was out were high quality. Wines has not played a decent game this season. He’s being carried. It’s a poor coaching manouvre to not pick your best team but Ken is the master at it.

Garner (what happened to this guy?!?!)
My buddy isn't in our best 34 for whatever reason. Got stiffed for opportunity last season and the coaches decided to play future delistee Broadbent instead.

It felt like we were a tall defender short and lacked some grunt.

Motlop for Ebert. We have plenty of runners so can exchange Motlop for Ebert. Shame for Bergman.

Burton for Watts. Gives us height, a good kick and an interceptor. Bonner hasn’t done enough.

Westhoff was bad and has been so for a number of weeks. He didn’t touch it up front, last week he got in Dixon’s way, when down back he was pushed off too easily and Marshall was favoured in the ruck. Let’s face it, Lycett’s injury saved him because we didn’t want to totally expose Ladhams. I wouldn’t rush Lycett back and Ladhams does need help. Would like MG in but he can’t ruck, so how about Hayes? Otherwise I suspect Westy gets one more week whilst Lycett rehabs.

Why is Wines being selected ahead of Rockliff

Because rocky wasn’t playing great? Was playing just barely okay and filling a role we needed.

their stats for this year are very similar except wines is blitzing his metres gained. Wines is also working harder to impact contests. Hopefully his form goes up to where it should be but who knows

How is Hayes going in the scratch matches?
If tap work by Paddy is a worry. Still no fan of 2 Rucks but if the Saints are going to go that way as well? I'm taking it as a given Lycett needs a week or three with his knee.

I feel like I watched a different game to most of you guys with Wines performance on the weekend - he burned the ball a bit but was ferocious in getting it and stopped Carlton many times - actually thought it was close to his best game this year.

That said Wines v Rocky will continue to be a topic of conversation and I think it's pretty much a coin flip which one plays when both are fit. The main benefit of playing Ollie is the more game time he sees this year, the better trade we will get at the end of the year. I think in terms of 2020 success Rocky is still marginally better overall.

It’s worth noting that last week cogs and hopper had probably their worst game for the year and then this week Cripps had his worst game for the year

I don’t think that is chance

wines / Houston combo has been very good at stopping opposition from winning the ball in the coal face.

I think sometimes we underrate inside mids because they aren’t hitting up targets all the time and take it for granted that the opposition aren’t dominant around contests and that our outside game is firing as if they aren’t linked.

I too doubt that Lycett will be fit to play this week, but I'm a bit surprised that some appear to be writing him off, as his bash and crash style will be very much needed against the likes of Grundy and Nicnat etc, when the whips are cracking come finals time.

His absolute domination and intimidation of Max Gawn only last season appears to have been forgotten as well.

Well probably find out as soon as this weekend what happens when you let the likes of Ryder get a free run at it

It worries me that we are still to short in the back line. Why can't Ladhams play off half back, offering us that extra tall in defence, with Lycett rucking? I view Ladhams as a real plus for the group, surely he stays in.

Wines sucked for three quarters last week but he was huge in the last. We don't complete that turnaround without him.

Re Wines v Rockliff, we're pretty much locked into Wines, because if we drop him to the SANFL again he definitely leaves at the end of the year and we'll be lucky to get a half eaten sandwich for him at the trade table. Sucks for Rockliff but it's the best thing for the club as a whole right now.

i was pro rockliff after round 2, but after seeing them both in the side again, despite his flaws wines is far more valuable to us.

Add to that the strong pack mark Ollie took basically uncontested, if he could take 4-6 more intercept marks around the ground each week, or get back to the goal a game mid he was this wouldn’t be a Wines vs Rockliff discussion, this would be a Houston vs Rockliff chat. Ollie needs that additional string to his bow, he is a coal face brute. Adding in as an intercept threat or Goal Kicking mid would force teams to pay more attention around the ground and everything would improve ten fold.

ladhams isn’t that kind of player

he’s not a great contested marker

he’s not a quick mobile guy that can cover ground and get to an aerial contest

he’s just good at getting in the right spots in contests and finding the ball and using it. Plays like a 200cm mid.

out: Burton (inj), Westhoff (omit), Motlop (omit)
in: Bergman, Georgiades, Ebert

F. Butters Dixon Gray
HF Rozzee Marshall Georgiades
C Duursma Boak Amon
HB Mayes McKenzie Hartlett
FB Jonas Clurey Byrne-Jones

1R Ladhams, Wines, Houston

int. Powell-Pepper, Bergman, Farell, Ebert
Motlop is crucial as a connector between the midfield and forward line. He receives handballs and finds open men on the break forward of the halfway line. Without him, we rely on our less composed midfielders to hoof the ball 50 metres up field with no plan of attack. He may not get a lot of the ball but he uses it wisely.

Agree on Houston. Since going back into the midfield he’s been integral.

it’s not so much his ballwinning ability which is fine but he’s defensive ability in there. Opposition mids have been quiet as all hell against us.

don’t think a single star mid has really burned us this year. Brisbane thrashed our centre group but that was a team effort and Lyons probably the one that did the damage. Houston wasn’t in the centre that game.

Yeah that Paddy Ryder looks to be a real player, reckon he could be the missing link we need? Wonder what it would take to get him to Port...
