All three have something to offer imho but also some weaknesses

Not an obvious standout though I'd be interested to see Burgess when the whole team isn't playing utter shyte like we were early in the season
I'd be fine with that, but I'm also happy with Berg staying til TT returns, as it's the closest to a like for like.

I think they probably go in unchanged.

Schoenberg is also a fair shout at half forward, seeing half forward is probably a good role to rebuild his AFL career at this point.

That said, I do like the all round game of Dowling here a bit more - especially the extra height with our inconsistent ball movement.
I'm yet to see it with Dowling. He still seems a bit like he's an accumulator without much damage - which could absolutely change with gametime.

The usual suspects, Sholl and McHenry, are playing well enough to be starting 22 at the moment. Sholl in particular had a very good night. Nankervis attempt at mark, going back with the flight in the last quarter, was terrific. Moments later he delivered the ball in to the forward 50. Fantastic play. I was critical of him after the Essendon match for his attack on the ball, but he and Cook, are worth persisting with.

I think ideally, Brodie Smith gets some game time in the SANFL and gets in some good touch. I think he can still offer something at AFL level, but not in the form or with the injuries he was carrying. Get him right and he could be an asset later in the season.

I would just make the change of Smith out for Berry, to be sub.

“Nankervis worth persisting with” must be one of the most understated posts I’ve seen on here. Bloke will be a gun.

He could be provided he maintains a hard edge, as his slight build doesn't conduce to the type of player he is. Does well in traffic with clean hands and one of the few who can bullet a 20m pass, off a step, into the middle of the ground to set play going. Not so much a run and carry type, neither is he suitable to a key position.

He’s a wing man through and through.

Sort of my point. I see the skills, but I am not seeing improvement. Not sure no-hoper is fair.

Nah, it's fair. Unfortunately for Cook, ball finding skills are everything when it comes to football on the offensive side of things. The damage you do with the ball can be a separator later on, when you're looking at the difference between someone stuck as a role player and the kids who ascend to the elite, but you can't make a career out of being a good kick on its own.

I'm not particularly against an accumulator in a role like half forward - or eventually wing - even if they lack a bit of damage. These are roles where a large part of it is just to keep things ticking over.

I do also want a bit of height, having some more marking options floating around wing/half forward might be the ticket to us finding a way to work around our ball movement issues.

I’m a big believer in having guys like Berry or Crouch spend time on the half forward flank. They naturally hunt the ball and move it with quick hands. If Taylor can be that guy then great too.

I’d much prefer having one of those guys on a HFF than a shape keeper.

I love the idea of Cook, just not sure where I stand on the reality.

Will be disappointed if Curtin or Nankervis make way for Smith or Murphy. Not sure where Berry and Schoenberg fit. Would be good to be able to give Cook another game but there is a lot of pressure in the SANFL. A good problem to have if the kids are being given opportunities

I don't think it would be humanly possible for anyone to be less effective than McSpudley.

His supporters lauded his game which consisted of a uncontested chest mark in the goal square (I suppose he didn't drop it this time) that led to a simple goal that every person on this board could have kicked.

And a block for Tex, once again any person on this board could have stood in the way of the Port Player.

So those two 'good' actions plus about a dozen fumbles and missing easy targets by foot.

I don't believe Taylor couldn't do any better than McSpudleys 'good' game above.
Don't think his game should be lauded, wasn't terrible though either as he contributed. Did a little more than just put a block on for Tex, he's the one that intercepted it on the half back line, fed it to Tex, then put the block on so that's completely set up by him. Obviously got another goal through work rate courtesy of Rankine. Only fumbled & screwed up one play badly that I recall or noticed.

I'm not against him being dropped, overall he's been very poor this year despite getting a better run of opportunity at it. Regardless on Friday night he wasn't as bad as all that.

In the end I wasn't discussing McHenry anyway. My remarks however were simply that I don't think Taylor is the one to come in, hasn't really looked on the level in SANFL a lot of the time so I question is he just a 'shiny new toy' or what is it that makes people think he's the one to be brought in?

Schoenberg would have to be first call up, looked easily our best player & that's coming back from a long term injury. I'd imagine Berry & Dowling are also well ahead of Taylor for a call up.

Cook deserves another game as we need to give him a decent block of games & not drop him after 1 quiet one.
It's been all quiet ones except against North. Outside of that his best game was 9 disposals and a goal against Carlton, and he's averaging just under 7 disposals while playing most of his time on the wing.

I'm happy to retain Cook for another week or two but omitting him would be totally reasonable at this point.

Cook is 10x as talented as McHenry and Murphy. On that basis he should be afforded 20 plus games to find out if he's worth persisting with.

Not one poor game.
Part of the problem too, and this impacted Curtin in the 1st half is we're very focused on moving the ball down the same side of the ground and if you're moved out of that zone into the outer defensive role you've got very little chance of actually getting near the ball since we don't switch it a ton in our back half.

Obvious a team plan to prevent turnover damage - which resulted in our disastrous start to the year because we forgot we also needed to score.

No way should Smith come back in.

He looks completely shot, whether it's the injury or age getting the better of him.
A big test for Nicks as coach

Almost a career-defining decision for him

Has Nicks learnt? Is he improving? Is he capable of leading this club up the ladder?

Or not.

Smith's form has been poor all year.

Can go back to the sanfl & earn his way back.

Cook can kick the ball 50m and over 10m high, the other two can not. That alone is worth persisting with
Cook didn't get much of the ball on Thursday night, but what he did was quality.

We just need to hang tough & give him a block of games, rather than dropping after a quiet game.

Surely it's a guarantee Nick's will drop Curtin for Smith. We got lucky with a Curtin debut with smith injured. He will be back straight in. Probably another youngster dropped for Murphy, maybe cook. Gross

Hope you are very wrong.
