We need to change our structure back to 4 small-med defenders.

Out: Gardiner, O'Donnell and Richards
In: Keath, Vandemeer and Cleary

Take a gamble with Vandemeer (high defender) and see how he performs as we desperately need speed on the ball, and give Cleary the Richards role.

Also, Gardiner has to be an out. He remains a poor 1v1 defender (top 10 loss rate in league) and is a liability with ball in hand. He also lacks game sense. He was the spare a number of times when Cameron went upfield, but he failed to impact the play and instead focussed on marking grass. O'Brien at least brings intercepting marking (avg 2.5 a game), which is a POD when compared with the other defensive options (Jones a side).

Hope they don't drop Arty.
He just needs specialised coaching ,not to get caught holding. He keeps making the same mistake,. being indecisive. Can be fixed .
IMO time for the future in defence. But won't happen. No Richards and JJ will test game plan..Busslinger is as ready as O'Donnell and Cleary is the future.

The thought of bringing in Poulter as an option to fix this mess makes me sad sad sad, not sure how a medium paced, outside player with an inconsistent loopy kick and zero inside ability whatsoever is gonna solve our problems

They’ll want to have a look at their shiny new toy. Well, second hand toy.

The way the teams are going Port should win by 40+, even though Port are the less talented side Hinklyey's by far the best coach in the league right now. Only with a dominant Bont performance or a 180 from the forward line is a win possible.

How about give Poulter a chance might surprise a few on here

Ins Kicking it to players who wear the red, white and blue and kicking through the big sticks.
Outs Kicking it to players wearing the opposition colours and kicking it through the small sticks

These ins and outs are more important than any player and change.

Jeremy Cameron had a lot of impact on the match beyond the goals he kicked, and suggesting he was held to 2 goals is a skewed way to describe a game from a forward who had 21 disposals, 2 goals, 10 score involvements, 5 inside 50s, etc. Some of our forwards would dearly like to be held to such a game.

The expectations on Gardner just keep getting lower and lower. If his teammates can't consider him a viable option to kick to uncontested when we switch across the back line because his kicking skills can't be trusted. Then the list of play actions that he is considered capable of handling must be getting remarkably small.
Keath made some comical disposal errors in the vfl himself as he has been doing for a while now. Should we look towards Bruce as the next cab off the rank?

Out: Richards, Gardner/O'Brien
In: Crozier/Cleary, Keath/Bruce.

I think it's worth changing up the key defensive mix, Crozier is pretty much banging the door down from vfl form, but it might be better to blood the youth of Cleary.

Now knowing our match committee, we'll probably either give Poulter first crack or play Hannan on a half back flank.

In-

Cleary
Crozier

Out-

TOB
McNeil

If we bring in another defender, I think Bruce was the pick of the lot. I’d play JOD back as a third tall. He can intercept.

Give VDM another week at VFL and look to bring him back after the bye as a half back.

Keath has been a pretty solid and versatile defender for a long time and tends to do a lot of positive stuff to compensate for his occasional mistakes.

Bruce has spent a lot of time forward so isn't as comfortable down back but is a better contested mark than Keath, and arguably a better match up against bigger bodied forwards.

I think Jones, Keath and Bruce make a pretty good combination when all of them are fit, with O'Brien first back up.

Good news to hear about Crozier's VFL form. Think he has been a bit unlucky selection wise in recent years so hope he gets rewarded.

Remember when we were saying our back 6 was going alright, and we were keeping talls to low goal tally’s? I specifically said why * with that, but what did we go and do? 🙄

Back to Jones, Bruce & Keath pls. Dale, Daniel, Cleary & Doc the smalls.
the loss of jj hurt us really badly
