Why did the AFL employ 2 people and stick them in an office in Shanghai mid 2019 if they don't love the prospects in China?

A couple of weeks before the game in 2019 the AFL made their announcement.

The AFL's new office based in Shanghai will open in the next few weeks, according to the League's general manager of China David Stevenson, and be staffed by two full-time employees.

"They'll be primarily focused on driving commercial outcomes and building long-term partnerships with either Australian companies trying to grow into China or Chinese companies trying to grow into Australia," Stevenson told AFL.com.au.

"They'll also be driving strong broadcast partnerships. We have a game a week on TV there and some strong social media coverage.

"Thirdly, the government plays such an important role, so it shows the government that we are long-term committed to China and building those partnerships."

The AFL wants to be involved with China because of a desire to expand, and with 1.2 million people of Chinese descent living in Australia, the link is already there.

It also looms as a revenue source to help fund other areas, such as the NAB AFL Women's competition and grassroots footy.

Did they actually open it?

St Kilda day of game announcement in September
“The AFL’s increased presence in China, including an office opened earlier this year, extends beyond the match day, with the Festival of Australia in partnership with the Australian government in the lead up the game.

Melbourne-born architect Alexandra Chu is busy with her latest project in Shanghai. Now a property developer and co-owner of the Anken Group, she is working on a landmark building to put Australia on the map in China’s business capital — a development called Australia House. After almost 20 years living in China — the country of her father’s birth — Chu, 46, is working with the Australian Chamber of Commerce in Shanghai on a seven-storey purpose-built building for the chamber and other Australian companies based in the city. It is set to open in November.
......
Australia House will become a focal point for Australian business in Shanghai, with co-working spaces, training and meeting rooms, event spaces, shops and a gym, all designed to appeal to a new generation of Australian smaller and medium-sized companies, many of which are servicing China on a fly in-fly out basis.
.....
The city hosts offices for many Australian businesses including the big four banks and Macquarie Group, Rio Tinto, Fortescue Metals Group, Australian law firms, Woolworths, Treasury Wine Estates, Visy, BlueScope Steel and Blackmores. Lendlease, which has also used Shanghai for its base in China where it has been operating for the past 25 years, is working on a $400 million retirement home project on the western outskirts of Shanghai with plans to expand the business. The AFL, which set up an office in the city this year, will base its China office in Australia House.

St Kilda can play the game in Melbourne and lose a stack of money on it then. Probably blows a close to $1 million hole in their budget.

It wont be that much. They can negotiate a fee for the game at Docklands with their landlord - oh that's the AFL.

So they will probably get a flat $$$ to play the game there. They will scramble to sell corporate facilities they have access to. They will get gate sales. I don't think they would charge members, say a flat $20 entry fee, but the could as this was never a home game that most members paid for in their membership fee.

I can’t see this game going ahead with the increased numbers day upon day of the coronavirus. I think it will get much worse before it gets any better

And, knowing China the whole thing could well be under reported.
Building a hospital in 10 days smacks of despration

Agree. I think the strangest thing about this all is not one reported case in Africa. I haven’t read one but I could be wrong. It gets into Africa big, there is real trouble

Yeah it’s cactus. Best we just make the call early, save everyone the trouble and then work on the game for 2021.

I think it would be good to still treat it as our “China game” in some way if possible. Maybe the Saints would agree to playing the game in Ballarat, there’s plenty of Chinese history there with the goldfields and what not. Nothing over the top ceremony-wise but maybe a brief moment to acknowledge the victims of the outbreak, whom will be in the many thousands by that point.

If the game is rescheduled St Kilda should not get to choose the time and place. It may be their home game but programming is entirely the prerogative of the AFL. The clubs put in requests at the beginning of the year but the decisions ultimately rest with the AFL.

If the AFL decide to pay St Kilda for the game, which they will have budgeted to do, they may well decide to programme it into 'developing market' such as Canberra, Darwin or Alice Springs. St Kilda have also played home games in Tassie in the past so depending on the schedule the game could be moved to Launceston.

Then again this is the AFL so St Kilda will probably be paid for the game and asked where they want to play it.

There is currently a push to establish an international fund to assist African nations in the advent of an outbreak of coronavirus in Africa. Bill and Belinda Gates have come on board. You are right, if coronavirus breaks out in the wrong part of Africa it may be impossible to control.

“We deplore and oppose those countries who went against WHO’s professional recommendations and ICAO’s bulletins,” Hua said. “Their actions, which sowed panic among the public, will not help prevent and control the epidemic. They have gravely disrupted normal personnel exchanges, international cooperation, and order of the international market for air transportation.

You mean this WHO?

"Chatter in diplomatic corridors has it that China's roles in the global economy and the WHO itself may have played a factor in the U.N. agency's delay in declaring an emergency. An emergency declaration would undoubtedly squeeze China's tourism and logistics chains, exposing President Xi Jinping and his leadership team to increased public dissatisfaction.

"China and the WHO have extremely close ties," a diplomatic source in Beijing said. China is the world's second-largest financial contributor to the U.N. The WHO's previous director-general, Margaret Chan, was nominated to the post by the Chinese government after spearheading Hong Kong's response to SARS.

China also provides significant aid to Ethiopia, the home country of current WHO chief Tedros. And Xi's wife, Peng Liyuan, is a longtime WHO goodwill ambassador for tuberculosis and HIV/AIDS."

You mean this ICAO?

"Dr. Fang Liu is the Secretary General of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). She was first appointed for a three-year term starting August 2015, and has recently been reappointed for a consecutive three-year term until July 2021.

Dr. Liu was also chief negotiator for the Chinese government for bilateral and multilateral air transport agreements with foreign countries."

Yeah, people should really trust their recommendations. This is Chinese bullshit soft power trying to influence the world at a time when they should be concentrating on handling their shit. It's not like they don't have the money or the people to deal with this better than they have.

Xi Jinping is fundamentally a Han chauvinist with a ‘historic mission’ to make China, Han China, great again,” says Professor Steve Tsang, director of SOAS China Institute at the University of London.

Sounds like someone we know.

Port pay the Saints, not the AFL

If this does go ahead still, it will be the biggest flop. No one is going to travel there to watch it.
We were considering the trip end of last year, not at all anymore. There would be so many in the same boat.
