Salary cap in theory puts all clubs on an even playing field with regard to free agents. But what do free agents have to do with Academy bids?



Bidding is the same for everyone. Nothing complicated.

Academy eligibility criteria there to ensure academies do what they are intended, which is to develop talent in areas otherwise outside the reach of the AFL. There are existing rules for academy eligibility anyway, so I was hardly complicating anything.



How is it equalisation when clubs have to operate under different rules?
Under your rules Freo would be eligible for a top40 bid this year. How is that fair?

Equalisation isnt about having the same rules as everyone else.

Thats why you get pick 1 for finishing last.

If a club struggles for years and doesnt make finals they should have full bidding access to their academy players. Your suggestion is they dont and would need to use picks instead. If they have pick 1 and their academy kid is ranked 14 then a top 4 club takes advantage.

If a club is fine, makes finals then they only have access to academy kids bid on after pick 40.

And its been shown quality free agents leave struggling clubs for contending clubs. Which is the reverse of what the AFL hoped.

I am starting to get more comfortable on 2 options for us at pick 2 and not sliding back. Wardlaw or Sheezel. That is assuming Wardlaw's hammies are ok. If not then it feels like Sheezel or Cadman depending on who Norf take.

Sheezel has done enough for me to believe he is high end, he has a great ceiling and he is one of the very few in this draft that offer a point of difference. I back in our club to get a Mt Lawley family and support group to get him to comfortable.

Wardlaw is exactly what I think we need and our balanced midfielder for a decade to come. It is all about his hammies. Not in the know so I will guess OK.

As a fall back, I have Cadman as the next option. He is a high roaming CHF and hence would complement Oscar very well. Not the highest level of need but when faced with the rest, he is a decent option. I think I am writing this thinking it is a Pieman pick so get used to it.

My assumption is we take 7 new players, lose Rioli for pick 27.

If we go Sheezel at 2, then I wold like the following
20 - Balanced mid in Burgiel or Hotton
26 - Rebounding defender in Weddle
27 - Inside mid like D'Aloia
38 - Broadbent ruck and assume his shin splints and growth spurt have held him back.
Rookie 1 - Foster as a KPF
Rookie 2 - Best small forward

If we go Wardlaw at 2, then I wold like the following
20 - Balanced mid in Burgiel or Hotton
26 - Barnett as a ruck/KPP
27 - Inside mid like D'Aloia
38 - Allan as a running defender
Rookie 1 - Foster as a KPF
Rookie 2 - Best small forward

It might be a touch to early for Allan but I just love the idea of Ed Allan coming good and winning the Glendinning/Allan medal

I think Ginbey will be well and truly gone by pick 20.
Agree with WCE_Phil end of the year when playing midfield he was good. As Phil said Speed, Strength and a bit of mongrel.
He has more upside I believe than Hewitt even though I think he will be a good player.
Hewitt was playing league when the highly rated Vic kids were playing against their own age.
Think Ginbey maybe selected before Hewitt.

Seems a dumb thing to target but I would love to see us draft someone young who we can chuck into the game round 1 and set them as a tagger for the opposition best midfielder. A bit like Fremantle did with Serong who shaked that tag and now is a good midfielder in his own right

Who do you have in mind? Only a few I can think of that are better or on par.

The issue with him, is he has a lower ceiling than others. But I think he could impact almost immediately, bigger body.

He's a solid midfield option with our 3rd pick onward.

Ryan has been mentioned plenty and highly rated.

Cowan less so, got some great attributes but his kicking lets him down.

I still think Gilbey with his injury is worth the risk with pick 38. He's the best run and carry plus kick defender for mine.

Oliver Hollands runs both ways and likes to tackle. Latish 1st rounder. 15 - 18.
