You don’t like Hopkins? Do you think there’s any chance of Beecken displacing say Cole?

If we thought Maric could transition to HBF I’d be comfortable with Hutchinson but based on his forward contested work I think he’s got a long way to go to become a defender.

I think we will go for a player thats capable of playing AFL this year, rather that a talented kid that will need more time.

Hopkins is as thin as a pipe cleaner and is at least three years worth of gym work, otherwise he will snap at AFL level.

What I do want us to address at some time in the very near future is, good - no elite foot skills and line breaking run and carry.

Both in the HBF and wing position.

To answer your question re Cole.

Beecken would be a better option than Witherden and L Edwards in our side.

Why I like Hutchinson is that I believe that both Cripps and Ryan are not far from "done" at AFL and neither Brockman,
J Jones or Dewar fill me with any confidence that they are capable of filling the high half forward role any time soon.

And the Geelong Falcons kid Will McLachlan is one that I also like, but he will need a few seasons before he is AFL ready, however he could be a handy HFF in the future and I see some scope in his development for duties higher up the ground.

Reality is that whoever we draft tomorrow night, they are long shots to make it.

I think we're on the clock with Harley. We're going to have to put some talent around him to make him want to stay. The Chad would have to be priority as the best WA mid out who'd have instant impact instead of waiting for a kid to develop. Harley looked pissed off last week, especially when Kelly ignored him who should have given it back to Reid and then shepherded him. The barge through goal he kicked was him cracking the shits. They need to make some hard calls on veterans, create some cap space and get aggressive.
Reid kicked a goal therefore he might leave is certainly a take

Is Hutchinson that running half-forward type, or the marking type? The former we need, the latter we don't.
Media continually describes him as "high-marking"

Not necessarily a knock on you, but this hypervigilance on how Harley Reid is feeling at any particular time and how it ties in to his long term future at the club is really starting to do me in.

Chill out.

Agree, am just about over the saturated Harley hysteria. If he goes or stays, what will be, will be. It's a team sport. We can survive without Harley, or should be able to?
Seventeen other teams get by without Harley. If he stays, even better!
Kids' still learning his craft and maturing...

Fire up the priority pick thread, lads… we need to keep Harley!!!

Being serious for a second, clubs that make knee jerk reactions like this, almost always make poor decisions because they’re grounded in poor logic.

This is the exact type of thinking that made Freo trade pick 1 (Hodge) + extras for Croad and McPharlin.

It's odd we're looking at another tall forward. On top of everyone else, we had Williams marked as a tall forward first and 2nd ruck.

Pretty sure I remember reading an article a few months ago that Sydney we impressed with Williams and his competitiveness.

If we pick Scaife, one can't help wonder if it's part of a greater plan.

So you’re saying Williams part of deal for Warner?

I remember this guy in his draft year. Good foot skills out of the backline is definitely a need and fits in the age bracket we're lacking. Sounds most likely to go to one of the SA clubs though

I remember him too. I wanted him, and then GC took him with one of the picks we traded them in the mega trade IIRC.

He is more than capable at ground level, yes he is a high flyer but its lazy journalism to brand him only as a high flyer.
His turn of speed is good and he covers a lot of territory, there is a school of thought that believes he could transition into a wingman.

It's going to be interesting to see what sort of influence our new List Manager Matthew Clarke has in regard to our selection tonight.

Historically Clarke has tended to draft similar types as Hutchinson, when he was Head Honcho at Richmond.
So given that I wouldn't rule out Will McLahlan.

Duane Massey similarly, being South Australian does like his SA boys, him being Woodville based I am sure he has full intel on the Woodville-West Torrens lad Luke Beecken.

It may well be determined if we are looking for a quick fix, or, are playing the long game and taking the best kid available.

Make all of that, as you will.

My preference for the MSD would be:

Will McLachlan, beautiful left footed half forward that I think could also play wing, so well balanced and has real penetration with his left foot. Good mark and knows where the goals are with his bags at Coates League level. I think he could be a real talent at AFL level, he might just need a while to develop.

Smartt is the other one I really like, but seems like there is a behavioral thing there holding him back.

I agree with Monocle though, I think the club will go a more mature ager that can contribute straight away.
Beeckan would be my choice, although I've only seen a bit of him so harder read. But he has some really nice traits and could be a Noble type rebounding defender.
Hutchinson, I'm not that sold on. He's got terrific athletic traits, which is why he is so highly regarded but nothing really stands out for me as a natural footballer. He's a good footballer, but I don't look at him and think wow (apart from some of his grabs), it just seems a bit 'not bad'. Where as Beeckan does some beautiful things of half back and looks more a natural footballer to me anyway.

Looks like Freo basically nailed on to get Charlie Cameron this off season. Would suggest that simply puts them out of the Liam Baker race salary wise?

Agree with all that ECE as I think our most immediate need is a run and carry, quick, good foot skills defender/ wingman.

Breeken ticks all those boxes, he is a younger and better foot skills version of Jayden Hunt.

I do get the knock on Hutchinson in that he isn't super skilled and that he is more of a scrounger / scrapper at ground level rather than a burst player, however things do seem to happen when he is around the ball, however he is by no means a polished player.

Also agree that McLachlan has real talent and has the most upside, however I think we are go the more mature player.

Another variable to consider is that both Hutchinson and McLachlan have nominated longer contracts where as Beecken has only nominated a short term contract.

Short contracts finish 31st October 2024.
Players get 50K for playing and if they are cut from the list on 31st of October they get a 20K payout.

Longer term contracts are for the remainder on the 2024 season and also the 2025 season.

Players who stipulate a longer contract, can NOT be drafted tonight and then given a short term contract.
