Latest news and rumours:

  • List Manager Matt Clarke appeared on Gettable - Click spoiler below for summary
On the draft: "We predicted that the draft was strong, but it's probably gotten stronger during the year."

On top end of draft: "You could probably make five or six different choices and get it right."

On Pick 3: "I reckon there's five (players) around that mark."

On splitting: "I think you want to hold an early selection if you can. The depth of this group allows you to maybe have some movement there, and see what you can do to bring in more talent in the first 20-25 picks. Easier said than done, and I think most clubs would be saying the same thing. We'll see what we can do."

On Liam Baker: "He's still yet to make a decision. They're still weighing up a few things. We'd love to get Liam on board from what he offers from a talent and leadership point of view. We understand where we're at as a group, we're rebuilding our group, we need to add some guys in the middle tier to support our young group."

On Jack Graham: "We've got a number of players that we're speaking to. A bit of a wait and see on that one as well. We'll talk to a number of guys."

On Shai Bolton: "I think it will be difficult for anybody, really. He's heavily contracted and a high quality player."

On James Peatling: "He's heavily involved in a finals series at the moment so I don't want to comment too much on it, but I think there's a number of guys that have been playing really good footy this year that could suit what we do and what other clubs do. He's taken his footy to another level this year."

On Tom Barrass: "We've had an early discussion with Hawthorn about it, they understand where we're at. He's nominated Hawthorn as his ideal destination. We want what we think he's worth, as a genuine key back in the competition that can do what he can do. We're obviously mindful of getting an appropriate deal for West Coast."

On Tom Clurey: "Maybe (note: sounded very non enthused). We'd probably need some key back depth, whether that's through the draft or trade and free agency."

On Jack Darling: "We've had initial discussions with his management group about (moving). We're open to talking, as we are with all of our players, but Jack's contracted with us."

On Liam Ryan: "I expect him to be at West Coast next year, yes." (The most definitive answer of the day by a mile, a non-starter of a talking point.)

On out of contact players e.g. Rotham, Witherden, Jones: "We're still working through what it looks like from a list point of view, and how many selections we'll want to have, and players that may come in and potentially may go out. You might want to give a coach an opportunity to look at these guys."

On Harley Reid: "We've had discussions most of the year with his management group. I think it sits in a really good place. We're open to doing really whatever they want to do to be honest. We're really confident in building the right system around Harley, on and off field, to make sure that he's really comfortable, that he's going to play his best footy, and his long term future."

On Jake Waterman's new deal: "Yep, really close. We're working really closely with his management on that. I expect that we'll have something done pretty soon."

On Oscar Allen: "We've been talking with Oscar and his manager most of the year on that one. We're going through some stuff at the moment. I think we'll be ok with that one."

also the offer they make impacts compo, so who knows.

based on what adrian caruso was saying, its hard to see why clubs below us would pay a premium to trade up.
to paraphrase his words, he was pretty comfortable to let the draft fall to them as he sees the next rung (players 8 to 15) as not far behind the top tier.

need to find a suitable club desperate for someone at pick 3.
Also did say he thinks there is a top 2 or 3 even though they haven’t done all the work on that top part. FOS and Lalor named

Watch u18 WA v SA again on weekend. Bo Allen out played Draper. If we can trade back to 6 and take Bo Allen, would that be OK? By the way, i have never seen another game Bo has played.

Draper was a huge way from match fit. Allan only played well in the midfield imo because of his size and athletic ability during the champs. He's an athlete first and footballer second imo. It was either Draper's second or third game back from injury and he was a long way from his best. He is a significant step up from Allan on exposed form over the last 2 years.

Albeit being a touch short he has a larger frame, is very slippery, knows how to play against men. He's not a bad mark but not any better than average for his size. The one deficiency in his game that can't be fixed is his kicking depth is really 50m on the run. That's pretty much all it's going to be.

Also whilst Harvey Langford likely won't punch great stats at the combine his first few steps are very good and he reads the play very, very well as well as having a great peg on him. He is genuinely in the number 1 pick discussion.

In your opinion would Langford be a good pick for us? we already struggle with two way running and defensive transition in the midfield, Reid and Hewett will never be elite in that area either.

Will not be surprised in the slightest if the AFL manufacture a band 1 compo for Battle

St Kilda have been one of, if not the largest critic of the northern academy and F/S concessions

They’ve also been bouncing through mid table purgatory since winning the spoon in 2014 - made finals twice (2020 and 23 without going further than a SF in 20) then a 9th, 2x 10th, 11th, 12th, 2x 14th and one bottom 4 finish in 2018 (16th)

So no success and have missed out on the genuinely pointy end of the draft in a decade of mediocrity

And there’s also the matter of a single premiership won almost 60 years ago, nearly double the next longest drought which is Fremantle at 30 years

All that adds up to giving them a leg up disguised as fair FA compensation using a non-transparent and notoriously rubbery formula

Just like North got for McKay

Blight apparently not settled at Richmond but they are going to offer him a contract extension which means we’d have to trade for him.

Blight is the obvious PSD option.

Not yet highly rated. Not worth top picks. Not yet on big coin.

MSD pick and partner in Perth.

If he says no and enters the PSD would anyone really bat an eye?

Or he gets bundled into to Baker pick swap mega deal.

Unfortunately that is exactly how AFL House operate.

Squeaky wheels get the oil.

That's why we need to "squeak" louder about how teams that don't need assistance keep getting the most assistance and legs up.

We seriously need to shake that tree as well.

Blight for Culley is an obvious trade that probably suits both clubs and possibly players. Tigers obviously have pick 1 and Norf pick 2 in PSD. Would either pull that lever? Possibly.

Packaged up as part of a Baker deal seems most likely along with Kaleb Smith.

Why would a club waste pick 1 or 2 in the PSD on a player who has rejected an offer and moved back to WA?

They just won't. They would use that pick on a player who wants to come and would be thrilled to be at the club and work hard.

Blight isn't a known gun who clubs are climbing over each other to recruit.

Forcing a fringe player picked up in the MSD back to a club and city where he doesn't want to be is just bad list management.

There would be much better options for that pick.

Let him go then. We need mids. A plethora (not a couple, bunch of several) of them. If we don't get in 6 mids, 3 via the draft and 3 as trades we will get smashed all year next, regardless of how shored up our back 6 are.

Peatling, Carrol, Garcia, Davies, Dev. Go get them all.

The understanding is Hawks didn't up any offer, Battle had already agreed to join them.
Hopefully. As Keys said, I think AFL will put their thumb on the scale regardless.

Tom Morris this morning:
“With Josh Battle, I’ve got his exact salary for 2024 minus any match payments -it was $400,000 plus $20,000 ASA (additional services agreements).

“It’s why he's an unrestricted free agent because he wasn't in the top 25 per cent of paid players at St Kilda.

“Why is that relevant? It’s because his salary at Hawthorn will more than double next year, and St Kilda were reportedly offering $900,000-950,000.

“So, he’s in for a big, big pay rise regardless … all that remains is whether the Saints get that band one competition and that’s on the borderline, we don’t know yet and we won’t until the week after the Grand Final.”

In the same way it made sense for us to trade for Brockman rather than go the PSD route because it allowed him to start preseason training straight away, it would make sense for us to trade for Blight

He won’t cost much so get a deal done and move on - Richmond won’t want to spend much time on it as they’ll have their hands full negotiating trades for Rioli, Bolton and Baker.

Is PSD on the same day as Rookie draft? (Which is in November?)

I don't think so. If he is not going into national draft or PSD, I think he is still eligible as SSP. (Since he is a former AFL player though not as FA as he is only a first year rookie)
He has to nominate for the PSD if Richmond offer him a contract extension and he declines. He can’t go straight to SSP and skip the PSD otherwise that would undermine the entire process. If he is not selected in the PSD then he can be picked up in the SSP.

Should be a fun trade period. Still so many things to happen.

  • Barrass trade.
  • Will Darling take one for the team and himself and walk to Norf?
  • Baker trade
  • WTAF is going on with Dev? Cough up a 6th rounder and bring that moron home to play round 1. Sheesh, easiest pitch ever.
  • Jack Graham thing.
  • Flan Rahn... Plz someone take him
  • Rotham... That is all.

We also have to pull a coach out of our ass at some point too.

Cap in hand, I hope we ask for a couple/few//bunch/several second rounder PP to use to target exactly this.

I wouldn't be adverse to taking a bunch of them. We sure have enough dead wood to delist.

Yes, what's happening with our request for priority picks?

This is quoted from the AFL site: "To be eligible for the SSP, players must have nominated for the most recent AFL Draft or previously been on an AFL list. Clubs will have two windows to formally sign a player via the SSP: November 27 to December 14 and January 15 to February.....".
Note the "or previously been on an AFL list".
