Latest news and rumours:

  • List Manager Matt Clarke appeared on Gettable - Click spoiler below for summary
On the draft: "We predicted that the draft was strong, but it's probably gotten stronger during the year."

On top end of draft: "You could probably make five or six different choices and get it right."

On Pick 3: "I reckon there's five (players) around that mark."

On splitting: "I think you want to hold an early selection if you can. The depth of this group allows you to maybe have some movement there, and see what you can do to bring in more talent in the first 20-25 picks. Easier said than done, and I think most clubs would be saying the same thing. We'll see what we can do."

On Liam Baker: "He's still yet to make a decision. They're still weighing up a few things. We'd love to get Liam on board from what he offers from a talent and leadership point of view. We understand where we're at as a group, we're rebuilding our group, we need to add some guys in the middle tier to support our young group."

On Jack Graham: "We've got a number of players that we're speaking to. A bit of a wait and see on that one as well. We'll talk to a number of guys."

On Shai Bolton: "I think it will be difficult for anybody, really. He's heavily contracted and a high quality player."

On James Peatling: "He's heavily involved in a finals series at the moment so I don't want to comment too much on it, but I think there's a number of guys that have been playing really good footy this year that could suit what we do and what other clubs do. He's taken his footy to another level this year."

On Tom Barrass: "We've had an early discussion with Hawthorn about it, they understand where we're at. He's nominated Hawthorn as his ideal destination. We want what we think he's worth, as a genuine key back in the competition that can do what he can do. We're obviously mindful of getting an appropriate deal for West Coast."

On Tom Clurey: "Maybe (note: sounded very non enthused). We'd probably need some key back depth, whether that's through the draft or trade and free agency."

On Jack Darling: "We've had initial discussions with his management group about (moving). We're open to talking, as we are with all of our players, but Jack's contracted with us."

On Liam Ryan: "I expect him to be at West Coast next year, yes." (The most definitive answer of the day by a mile, a non-starter of a talking point.)

On out of contact players e.g. Rotham, Witherden, Jones: "We're still working through what it looks like from a list point of view, and how many selections we'll want to have, and players that may come in and potentially may go out. You might want to give a coach an opportunity to look at these guys."

On Harley Reid: "We've had discussions most of the year with his management group. I think it sits in a really good place. We're open to doing really whatever they want to do to be honest. We're really confident in building the right system around Harley, on and off field, to make sure that he's really comfortable, that he's going to play his best footy, and his long term future."

On Jake Waterman's new deal: "Yep, really close. We're working really closely with his management on that. I expect that we'll have something done pretty soon."

On Oscar Allen: "We've been talking with Oscar and his manager most of the year on that one. We're going through some stuff at the moment. I think we'll be ok with that one."

Let him go then. We need mids. A plethora (not a couple, bunch of several) of them. If we don't get in 6 mids, 3 via the draft and 3 as trades we will get smashed all year next, regardless of how shored up our back 6 are.

Peatling, Carrol, Garcia, Davies, Dev. Go get them all.

3 12 23 three best kids - no keys.

There is clearly a top 3 IMO apart from ashcroft which is FOS jagga and draiper .

Then smillie, Langford and read are the next bracket all with down sides

Smillie didn't transition to playing bigger opponents
Langford is one paced
Read is a flight risk

Just pick the top 3 player who is still there .
I disagree 😊
This year there will be different opinions but I'm almost certain Draper "slides" (from the majority point of view). He's just not good.

Smillie is the same but is a monster so someone could reach a tad.

I'm thinking Langford, Reid (especially) and perhaps even Hotton will be in the top 5 instead.

Blight is the obvious PSD option.

Not yet highly rated. Not worth top picks. Not yet on big coin.

MSD pick and partner in Perth.

If he says no and enters the PSD would anyone really bat an eye?

Or he gets bundled into to Baker pick swap mega deal.
The media will think adding a MSD player will bump it from late 1sts to barrass pick just you watch .

Maybe we offer witherden to balance it out 🤣

I doubt Hotton will, just can’t see a club taking a bloke with an ACL injury in the top 10.

Agree that Reid is definitely in that top group. He’s probably got the most well rounded game and skill set in the draft.

Decision making and ball use is very good, arguably the best in the draft pool.
Has good speed and agility.
Accumulates as well as anyone including Jagga. Vic Metro MVP, and probably has the best current form of anyone in the Coates league.

Some big ticks right there.

If we were to trade pick 3 out to split it - what picks could we realistically turn it into? With no clear pick 1 and a more even and deep draft this year, could that actually be the move?

I think we'd like to do it for 2 top 10(ish) picks, but I can't see any club that would want to facilitate that. Say pick 6 and 11. Even then I'd just rather take a shot at a top 3 mid.

For the first three quarters of this game Gerreyn seemed to be waging a one man war against the entire Subiaco team. He dominated the ruck with deft tap work, he followed up at ground level with clean and skillful work by hand and foot, he kicked goals, and most impressively took a variety of strong marks around the ground. Just prior to the 3/4 time siren he copped a heavy knock, lay prone for a while and then had to come off bleeding and visibly groggy. It was extremely surprising to see him back out there in the final term, and he looked a shadow of his former self.

And that shows why our pick 3 may be very valueable to one club but not so much to others.

Such a broad number of views and player ratings.

Someone falls hard and really wants a player they may just come calling.

Agreed, the lack of intensity from Reid is a concern though, no defensive accountability, barely ever exerts any energy in that aspect.

Is he the next Pendles / Daicos lite player or will he end up struggling with the physicality like so many former draftees of his archetype?

He probably is my favourite player in the top 5 mix regardless, the offensive skills he possesses you just can’t teach.

I think Richmond would be pretty keen to team Jagga and FOS together. I’d be pushing 3 and 23 for 6 and 9 if they get those picks in.

If saint get 2 x top 10 picks they would be another.

Yeah that's a ? on Reid, he's not really physical and doesn't seem too concerned with the defensive side of things. Pretty common in stand out juniors, but still a big weakness

****, i hate talk of splitting a top 3 pick, unless it's an absurd massive overpay by a team, hated it when we did it in 2022 (Sheezel >>>>>> Ginbey and Hewett (injury has killed him)), will hate it if we do it this year.
But Sheezel would have left for his Mum's brisket sandwiches and matzo ball soup after his initial contract

I’m warming a bit on this year being a great opportunity to do it. Experts scrambling on who will be the top pick still, bolters like Langford continuing to rise in the speculative order, lots of great mids available in the top bunch with not a whole lot between them. If we could get like 6 & 11 and like a Peatling too I think we would have killed it.

At present 6 could easy be a Smillie, Draper or Reid. I think it might be the go actually

1 or two pre seasons will make a huge difference.
