Never know though with rookie draft as its different compared to the draft. The draft is basically a under 18 only thing.

PSD there might be a fair bit of unknown talent with mature age players still. No one looks at the state league level players and thinks draft. That all belongs to the PSD. Could still find a few good mature players around the 22-27 age group.
Time to get speculative and back intuition I say

It's a little known fact that Shepparton and Witherton are actually 3rd cousins.

Serious question here.

Am I the only one not sold on Jai Culley or what? I thought he was meh. Nothing special and I’m not seeing what everyone else is.

Happy to put my money where my mouth is and go watch some preseason training when they’re back if you guys tell me I’m 100% off, but I’m just not seeing it at all

Who knows what he’ll be but he was working at charcoal chicken 3 weeks before playing for us. Surprised he even got a touch at all.

Not faulting the lad’s effort at all. Or even the character or desire or the fella.

Simply most people assume he’s going to be part of the spine for the next few years. I’m saying I haven’t seen anything to convince me that’s a given aside from a good attitude, good work rate and a woeful haircut

This preseason will be massive for him. To see how he goes against the other guys. The main thing that worries me about him is his speed. Guys like Cripps get away with not being particularly quick though so who knows

I rate Culley’s work in the clinches and tackling. He struggles to find the footy in space but has shown a thumping and sometimes subtle boot when he does.

I think there’s enough to work with there.

Yep, and he is also part of the COVID impacted draft class, who really only finally got a crack in the u18 midfield as an overager this year.

Then gets 10+ tackles on debut against men what 5 weeks after moving across the country. And 20 touches the following week?

What he showed was quite remarkable (cheap elbows aside), and a full preseason should do wonders.

Not quick, but we can add speed around him and have a balanced midfield team.

Culley is an ideal Redden replacement. Tackles like a madman, tough in the clinches, big enough to make oppo mids work for it.

Probs going to have issues spreading offensively or finding uncontested ball (Just like Red Bull Rowell), but like Thorne said, there's plenty to work with.

Worst case, turn him into a run with player.

Just have to be cautious we don't bring in too many more draftees like just like him. Need some outside run, pace, X factor.

Looking at his immediate output, I don’t think we know at all what his ceiling is, but as a raw kid with no preseason he’s entirely dominated our existing crop for tackles. Would appear that his floor is hard nosed tackling dickhead of a mid. Don’t think it’s unrealistic to think that, at worst, he’s a decent attempt at an immediate Redden replacement and his ceiling might be so much more.

Pretty handy thing to have as he fleshes the rest of his game out. Not sure we’ve seen anything that says this guy is a Brownlow caliber midfield, but he looks instantly more up for it on a pretty shoddy build up to AFL footy than any kid I can remember us drafting of late (maybe Oscar Allen aside).

I think people need to tenper their expectations of him. He shown a few nice things but very much a long term project player
