Rotham and LEdwards are both contracted for 2024 so unlikely either will be delisted

If he doesn’t extract the digit, Rotham may struggle for game time and perhaps ask for a trade

Haven’t been overly impressed with the way he’s been training early days

LEdwards is one I’d consider moving to the rookie list if he has another bad year injury wise. He has shown good signs when he’s been able to get onto the ground. It would purely be for list management purposes if we needed more list spots.

O’Brien, wispy, mousy brown mop nestling above wide rimmed glasses, perched on his nose. Some wags on social media have suggested he bears a resemblance to Elton John. It’s no stretch.

Did anyone see this in the Draft recap from the club. 🤣

Stocksy penning his new Mills and Boon novel.

Laughed at the thought of 🥧 reading that story and getting to that bit hahaha

That was the worst article I’ve ever read. Not getting those minutes of my life back.

I agree rotham has to do more but looked a lot better at wafl level in a more attacking role. Whilst I'm not overly confident he'll make it with a new more attacking game plan he might surprise everyone

From the outside, and going by hearsay from parents and the QAFL clubs, our academy is very poorly run and cash strapped.

Again, from the outside, GC’s academy is about to explode in terms of talent coming through. I think they’re going to make Sydney’s academy look second rate in terms of talent production.

But does any of it matter if their branding and guernseys are so shit ?

I've supported both expansion teams now due to location. And Gold Coast has the bigger market. But how do you convince people to buy merch that looks like rubbish?

Despite the Gold Coasts lack of sustained success and constant need for assistance, isn’t this the exact reason for bringing them into the league…
I’ve never minded the arrangement in any of its flawed iterations across the last decade (Besides maybe our spoon year haha). The afl is playing the long game, and seemingly winning if the above is true.

Just reading about the rookie draft and who missed out.

Gilbey

D'Aloia

Szybkowski

Two of whom were touted as late 1st early 2nd rounders earlier inthe year.

Jed Hagan as well.

WC Phill. Andy insights on these guys and why they missed?

It was a midfielders draft so maybe the clubs had taken enough mids!

Gilbeys injury obviously a factor.

Gilbee got drafted by GWS.

I assume you are talking about Sam Gilbey from Claremont.

I asked Bond that very question, and his response was typically vague, but he suggested that we considered him for a late pick and were restricted by list sizes.

Personally, I did hope we’d pick him up, but obviously there’s still time in the supplementary period, mid season or next season’s drafts if he’s good enough.

For now, we’ve got plenty of half back options for the short and medium term (Yeo, Hunt, Duggan, Cole, etc), but Gilbey is quality for sure.

Does anyone know if we would still be able to invite Gilbey as a train on player over the pre-season even though we currently have no list spots available? It’s highly likely someone will suffer a long term injury before the season starts and a spot will open up. Might be a way to get him on the list.

  • Kobe Ryan was rated highly by you earlier in the season, was he still in the mix on draft night, or had his personality soured teams a bit too much?
  • Was the choice of Hewett with our second expected by the blues? Was there any doubt about us ending up with Ginbey?
  • You talked about a tall and small being available on the second night and you hoped we hadn’t promised K Smith a spot, we’re you referring to Barnett/Burgiel?

Kobe Ryan slowly drifted further and further away from being drafted. Definitely a better talent than a lot of those drafted but yes, a very weird kid. Was still on the board for Carlton and I was unsuccessful in my talk of picking him instead of Binns (we were almost certain Lemmey would be there later even though he was rated higher and the plan was always to take 1 tall)

No, thought our second would be Ginbey after cats picked busslinger and we drafted Clark. Thought Hewett would get through to West Coast third until second day of the draft until the rumours about Essendon trying to trade for Sydney's pick 17 for him.

Yes, I thought Barnett would be the pick for WCE on the overnight and had heard WCE had promised a pick to K Smith. I'm glad that was either a rumour or for the 5th pick as I rate Burgiel much, much, much higher.

Long is a great pick up too. Rather than picking someone like Jones who is a mid who may be able to translate to playing small forward Long has already proven he can play that role coming back from injury. TBH i think i said it before or elsewhere but I think it's what got him over the line in being drafted.

We are starting to amass a midfield group that has both speed and height. The midfielders who will be 23 and under next season are starting to look a whole lot more appealing than the lot 2 years ago.

Focussing in on height, Culley leads the group but he has company and all are above the old 6 foot mark. I haven't included Winder as I am just not sure he can be seen as a future midfielder.

Do you think we would have selected Clark?

Feels like Ginbey was pretty locked in...

Our Best 23 who are 23 and Under in 2023 are starting to look a more promising.

After the last 2 years drafting, we suddenly have options in our midfield. Another reason to smile today.

We are going to need another KPF next draft - and a good year for it. We have decent WA and interstate options. I am really keen to see what Jack Williams might be able to do next season. He is a very late birthday and possibly still growing. He was drafted as a 196 cm and I sense he is getting damn close to 200 cm. We hardly got the ball down to him in 2022 and he showed in U18 he can play KPF. KPD and is very adept as a second ruck. We need to be patient. I am hoping he will be seen as the draft steal of 2021.

Started to sound like a sponsorship on the way for J Williams but Monocle has stolen your man

Any word on why Gilbey didn’t get picked up at all?

I'm with you that it looks a lot better than it did 12 months ago.

We probably do need to be a little wary of getting too far ahead of ourselves though. 4 guys on this list haven't played a game, 3 more played 4 games or less last year.

The other 2 - Hough looks like a good player, possibly HBF (at worst), outside mid (likely) or more balanced (remains to be seen if he can play that role). Xon TBH will always be the 5th or 6th mid - and that's OK, teams need those types - but basically 4-5 on that list need to overtake him pretty quickly!

I don't think he's physically able to train at all.

So looking onto next year & the list changes that IMO are likely are the following.

Hurn - Retire
Shuey - Retire
Foley - Delist
SPS - Delist
Witherden - Delist
Clark - Delist

Apart from the 2 obvious retirements I feel like the other players have had plenty of chances & most of them lack pace or just aren’t good enough.

If we then need more list changes the following players would be under the pump.

LeEdwards
Rotham
O’Neil
Petrucelle
West
Winder
Trew

I really feel like most of these players need a good year. A few of them have suffered from injury, just not being given opportunities or played out of position.

We currently have good looking draft hand next year with 6 picks in a reportedly strong draft that I would be using next year which could grow with trades or FA compo. We will also have the opportunity to possibly have a crack at a young talent in the mid season draft again.

1 x R1
2 x R2
2 x R3
1 x R4

When I look at this hand plus the previous couple of draft hauls I really feel like if we nail next years draft we will be on the right track just before the tassie team comes in and comprises the draft. For all the complaining I hear I certainly feel like we have embraced the rebuild & now have plenty of young talent on the list already.

Trew and Winder would be in the front group too if they don’t show improvement..

I would be very, very keen to know why D'Aloia in particular wasn't selected

Huge wraps from just about everyone i have spoken to with links to South Australian football. Great leader, great kid, very coachable, trains like a demon and didn't he get best on for South Australia in the national carnival? (If i have got that part wrong, apologies)

No visible weak links from what i have been told, save for the fact that he isn't super fleet of foot.

WCE_phil any insights?
