Bulldogs receive: 8, 20, 54 39
Bulldogs lose: Dunkley, 11

Eagles receive: 11, 27
Eagles lose: Rioli, 20, 39, 54

Port receive: Rioli, Dunkley, 39 54
Port lose: 8, 27 (Amon)

(Assuming Amon compo is a second-rounder. Picks after that have been adjusted)

Based on points, values Rioli at ~29 and Dunkley at ~11 8.

Leaves us with 2, 11, 26 and 27 to take to the draft.

Who have I ripped off?

For a team that finished second last with the worst season in club history and in desperate need of a rebuild we sure are taking our sweet arse time announcing delistings.

The fringe players who’ll make up the delistings were playing WAFL still until Saturday. Further the club has said they intend waiting until the trade period before making decisions on players, presumably because available list spots will be contingent on who is traded in, or out.

We have 30 players with contracts for 2023 or beyond. I’m assuming/guessing, subject to trades, we go to the draft with our first 4 picks plus 2 rookie draft or SSP picks

With a list size of 42 that leaves 6 spots for our current uncontracted players

Naitanui, Hurn and Redden have all announced their intention to play on without signing as yet.

Leaves 3 spots for the following:
Williams
Dixon
Witherden
Nelson
West
Trew
Joyce
Winder
Naish

Witherden for example might get a new contract if someone like Rotham asks for a trade

There’s no rush

Freo's rebuild was shambolic and half succeeded in spite of their strategy. They had bust trade after bust trade and missed finals for 6 seasons. If they had just kept some of their decent players and hit the draft, they might have been back with a few years.

As it stands, they look well short of being a team that can win a flag. Almost lost on Saturday against a bog average Bulldogs. Their forward line sucks and they are likely to lose Lobb this off season. I don't see how they take the last step to contender without a short bottoming out, but as they need a gun KPF, that probably won't work in the short term.
Got to take your Eagles tinted glasses off.

No team is perfect across every line.

They are led by a 23 year old mid and a 21 year mid.

They’ve got a young 19 year old key forward who stood up on the weekend.

They’ve got a heap of young local talent, one of whom this board was frothing over last draft.

Yes, they’re missing a genuine key forward at this stage, but so are Melbourne, and Fremantle have at least the next 8 years to find one.

The AFL's Sign and Trade Period will begin on Friday, September 30 when the free agency window opens. Free agents will have until the following Friday, October 7 to switch clubs, with clubs then having a further three days to match bids through to Monday, October 10.

The Trade Period will start on Monday, October 3 and run through to Wednesday, October 12 with deadline day again finishing in primetime at 7.30pm AEDT.

The point was that they regenerated their list due to poor player retention, and losing quality players at that. Their ability to 'GWS' their list by losing good players and continuing to have good draft picks is how they've ended up where they are. Its not a great strategy, but they've landed like a cat.

Now that the building blocks are there, they can plug list holes with trades and free agency, but despite this the revolving door continues and they are set to lose more pieces of the puzzle in the process.

I was referring to their current team. I agree they have a bit there, but they are going to have to do a short drop to get the rest.

The problem with the missing pieces being gun KPP (they need a young KPF and KPD) is that they take time to come on. Amiss may be part of the answer (can't really tell after 2 games), but it will be four more years before he can lead their forward line. Anyone they draft this year is also 4 seasons away.

It's this reason why I think the idea of building the midfield first is flawed. Build the KPP, as young mids can come in and impact after 1 or 2 seasons. It's also much easier to trade mids into your team to fill gaps. A grade KPP rarely move and cost a kings ransom when they do.

Building your KPPs first is just as flawed as building your midfield first.

Your draft position and talent available should determine who you draft. Top 2 pick -almost always choose a mid. Top 10 picks - almost always choose a mid or KPF. Don't choose rucks with Top 10 picks unless they are exceptional and you already have some Top end mids and KPF. Don't ever choose a KPD with a Top 10 pick.

This year there are no stand out KPFs and we have a top 2 pick . We have to choose a mid.

We will choose a mid. Exciting times really, hopefully our recruiters nail the pick.

Hickey is a much better ruckman at Sydney than he was at St Kilda - I’d suggest he learned plenty at West Coast working with Nic. His problem here wasn’t that he couldn’t ruck but that he struggled as number 2 with his best games for us coming when Naitanui wasn’t playing

I think you’re underestimating his ability to be a ruck coach

Dean Cox may have had something to do with the improvement of Hickey.

Given the state of our list, and the fact that having finished second last our draft picks in each round are the best they've been in a long time, I dearly hope we have the good sense to take more than 4 picks in the national draft

Foxsports says Richmond are trading in Taranto and Hopper from GWS. How is a team that has won 3 flags recently able to have the cap space and trade capital to get deals like that done? Mayby Dusty is on the way out and that is part of it. In any case they have managed their list a hell of a lot better than us in order to be doing these deals.

Our first 4 picks are 2,20,26 & 38 than our next pick isn’t until 74 (Port have our 4th round pick - 56) so I’m not sure if we go that deep in the draft. More likely we use the rookie draft where players are on 1 year contracts and aren’t included in the salary cap
