The main OOC name id like us to chase this year (aside from Warner) is McVee.
He'd have to be gettable with our 2nd rounder youd think, and would bring some class to our backline along with being able to do a lockdown role. Either McVee or Hough could be freed up a bit to use their weapons.

Could get Rodriguez + C.Curtin/whatever with hawks 1st + McVee + Banfield + nga kids potentially?

Agreed, Demons may ask for more though. My other targets in addition to McVee would be:

Realistic

Reilly O’Brien UFA
Brandon Starcevich RFA
Zane Zakostelsky
Zach Reid
Kane Farrell RFA
Jacob Blight
Angus Sheldrick
Chad Warner

Pipe dream

Tom De Koning RFA
Luke Davies-Uniacke RFA
Ed Richards RFA

Absolutely no chance we’d be able to get him with our second rounder with how compromised next years draft is

If we finish 16th again IMO there will almost certainly be 4 but at worst 6 players taken with FS/NGA before our 2R pick which means it would be pick 25-27. I agree that’s not going to be accepted for McVee but it’s not too far off. Once you hit the middle of the 2R it’s going to be an absolute shit fight though.

geez almost had the same, 7 of.
O'Brien: very good ruck but probably only got 2 seasons after next.
Starcevich: good player but paying overs for player we have plenty of/prefer McVee
Zakostelsky: cheap rookie KDEF to develop if can't get a game.
Reid: too injury prone.
Farrell: RFA really good rebounding defender that would bring more than Starcevich, but again premium price.
Blight: great KDEF depth or more?
Sheldrick: love the tough as nails mid/fwd, bit of L Baker about him, F3rd.
Warner: elite no brainer, 2 mid first round picks and 8 years at $1.2m. Hawks 1st and WC F1st.
McVee: just about coming into his prime, great rebounding HB who could move into wing/mid in time. F2nd.
L Reidy: if chasing ruck he is the most AFL ready young rucks OOC/could play day 1, 25 next year, 6 years good service.

Id add an extra future pick if necessary, McVees value will be decided by what roles he plays in 2025. If he sticks to being a small defender and doesnt get any midfield time the Dees might have to accept our 2nd rounder if we finish bottom 4 areas.
If Oliver and Petracca stay fit and adding Langford+Lindsay would mean I think its not unlikely McVee plays mostly the same role again.

They can ask but doesnt mean they have to get, despite what we know about our list manager

Idk about Sheldrick tbh, probably depends a bit on how Hall is tracking. if Hall looks good then Sheldrick is probably not really a list need. Sheldrick doesnt really have any positional versatility or great running ability, I wonder if we show interest at all
Reid would be nice, former top 10 pick, get him fit and put both Archer and Zach in the backline playing together

no point holding off for the MSD either, just get it done

We have done well in the MSD recently. Seeing who has improved in the second tier comps for half a season is why we would consider waiting.

We need another 200cm plus mature ruckman. Either as short term to provide depth or as a longer term project to hopefully find a player.

Agreed. Seeing 3 months of exposed from is much better than trying to pluck a random name out now.

Our three MSD picks, Culley, Hutchinson and Maric have all been reasonably successful. Culley was unlucky to blow his knee up.

I forgot about him. He was our first attempt, and feel like they had no idea what to do with the MSD. Have learnt the lesson.

He was our second attempt

That year in the MSD we took Will Collins with our first pick, then West with our second

Easy to understand why that would be forgotten, especially when you consider we could have taken Nic Martin

Oh wow. Seems like a lifetime ago, had completely forgotten about the random Swan Districts reserve player plucked from obscurity.

To be fair we were mid table then and had pick 11, not much was taken after us. Newcombe at 2, Ned Moyle at 5, Peatling at 8 were nice pick ups

Bit of a **** up that one. Nic Martin is exactly the type we are missing from our list.

This guy is exactly what WC need. Goal kicking, game-winning midfielder who kicks most of his goals on the run and many from 50m.

Also 23 years old, huge upside and WC badly need to land a big fish and become a destination club if they are going to attract the right people through FA and trade during the compromised Tassie draft years.
Outstanding player and would love to get him but not if we have to sell the farm. The thing is, I expect Hewett to become a similar sort of player, and Hutchinson to become a big bodied mid, building on the small, but promising, sample we saw at times last season. I'm of the opinion our mid-field isn't as bereft of talent as some would have us believe, other than the ruckmen that is, who have given our mids nothing for 3 years! If Flynn stands up and can create a break-even situation for our mids, then it will allow them to be more offensive, something they've not had the luxury of in the past 3 seasons. Well see how we go before deciding on how much we "need" and should give up for Warner.

Based on WC finishing 16th and Hawks 9th

Pick 10 and F1 would be enough for Warner (prob means we lose Curtin)

Adding Warner and Freddie would be amazing, plus adding Banfield, Evans and Walley with out later picks

That should be midfield done!

Warner, Ried, Freddie and Hewett our new fab 4 with plentry of B grade support
and still no thought given to improving our (the) worst ruck in the comp. We should have taken Dodson with one our picks in the 40s this draft.

unless Barnett grows an extra leg, and Flynn stays fit, our biggest hole is a competitive ruckman. Disappointed that we didn't grab Dodson in the draft.

Eagles recuriters probably

For how garbage Essendon are with their general drafting they hit the scrap pile for gold that year. Durham is brilliant, absolutely love him.

Can only afford so many list spots to allocate for young developing rucks.

If Flynn or one of the kids don't come good we will need to trade in a mature ruck or as a FA.

For those that want us to invest in a ruck to be competing, I wanted some facts. So I went back in history to see what the Grand Final ruck combinations looked like since 2015

1733367273267.png

I highlighted in yellow players who had been traded and hence at their second or more club. Note that Grundy is highlighted at the Swans in 2024 but not at the Pies in 2018 as he was drafted to Pies.

What it says is that you only need a serviceable ruckman and a KPF who can chop out in the ruck. The KPF needs to be happy to ruck (as against Lynch, Hawkins, JK, etc who can take the odd hit out but do not go for centre clearances and deep in defence to ruck)

A good midfield can paper over the cracks of an average ruck. When NicNat was around, this was the opposite.

A serviceable ruckman with Archer Reid filling in may well just be all we need. If Flynn can get fit this season, he and Jack Williams should be enough.

The real question we need answering this coming season is will Barnett make it as an AFL player and if yes, as what - ruck or KPD?

I haven’t given up hope of Flynn staying fit. If he can then he’s the exact hitout to advantage ruckman we need. JWilliams more than serviceable chopping out in F50 but still too early for Archer to be rucking at AFL level.

I’d love to see Barnett developing as a CHB. Would also be a handy chop out ruck in D50 and would mean Shanahan can develop as a KPF which I’d prefer to KPD.

Is Dodson going to be good at AFL level year 1 probably not. If we're intent on Drafting our way to a good Ruck we have to be ready to wait on them for 3-7 years. Conventional wisom is that rucks are typically only hitting their strides at around 23-25 years old. The exception of course is the ruck with a huge physical advantage 212cm+ or the elite jumping ruck like NicNat.
