It’s time now to fully turn our attention to the off season and what we can do through the trade period/draft to chase down Melbourne in 2022.

Unless English shows some level of developing competitive, aggressive traits I'm not that interested TBH. His GF performance on the big stage was pretty average. He will need to show something more in 2022 to land a 1st round pick for him IMO.

English is a semi decent tall forward and that may be where we need him next year and play as a 2nd ruck.

I wouldn't be rushing to land him with a fist full of top picks that's for sure.

Unless the latter changes, bringing him on board to pair with an also unconvincing ruck like Bailey Williams, or the always injured Jamieson would be silly.



At some point we may need to get an actual proper ruckman. Not a FWD/RCK. Not a chop out ruck. A proper dinosaur work horse who is capable of rucking on his own if required. Essentially a Tom Hickey

These kind of numbers obviously fit the narrative but he was thrown around a lot even as a junior playing back a fair bit in his bottom age year and draft year.

Brander in his bottom age U18 year played almost exclusively forward and did very well however I think this was largely due to size and athletic ability. It was only in a few games late that year he played any defence. It's why going into his draft year he was a prospective number 1 pick. In his draft year he performed at an average level at best. His speed, size and athleticism led to him doing well in defence against those kids he was up against but his position as a forward was now not dominant in regards to those around him. Also remember that it wasn't a big year for talls in that draft pool.

He basically played 1 very good game as a forward and 1 decent game as a forward in his U18 year and champs. It was really only when it came to playing against men his lack of intensity and aversion to extreme contact became obvious. His set shot kick was always a worry. I think as a club over the period of 2 years our recruiters, particularly the eastern states recruiters believed the hype more than the performance. He was originally going to be exclusive for GWS and then they changed the academy rules, he was a WCE supporter from the eastern states and as a club we were looking for potential replacements for Kennedy.

Here is a very good thing to think of though. (particularly if Allen can get over injury worries) If you were asked to give up pick 13 and 21 for a player that can lead your forward line for a decade and output 80% of the level of Kennedy (some would say a similar level to Darling over his career) every recruiter would take that any day of the week. I had serious doubt on Allen, he was 191cm, playing key tall and had just had a huge growth spurt after primarily being a midfielder. We were very lucky he grew another 5cm post draft. If he was 196cm at the combine he would have been a top 5 pick. The worries I had about Allen turned out to be the worries I should have had about Brander.

What would you offer in a trade for English?

I think English could be a handy addition, but the Dogs would want more for him than we would be prepared to pay. I also think trying to prise Jackson, McDonald or Naughton loose would be far more important.

Anything more than one of our second rounders (ideally Port's) is madness. He was pick 19, he's far from a superstar ruck and we don't need a tall forward.

It's not an enticing deal for the bulldogs but neither was us getting pick 37 for one of our best midfielders and vice captain in 2015 so if Tim's life is pushing him back to WA, suck up the loss for drafting a Western Australian.

That's not going to happen. And it's got nothing to do with whether he is worth it or not.

There would be no political will around West Coast for trading out first rounders atm.
With our ageing superstars, the Kelly deal and also Brander falling through there is just no way I can see it happening whether he is worth it or not.

Don’t know why on earth WC didn’t target Paddy Ryder before he went cheaply to the Saints (where he had a massive impact). If ego’s were the problem WC could have told him and NN that they were joint number 1 ruckmen.

This is the part that confuses me. Once Nic Nat is done, there's no clear option for number 1 ruck at the Eagles, and you'd have to be brain dead to think recruiting English as number 1 ruck is a good idea. Bailey Williams is probably your next best option after Nic Nat, and while looking promising, he's nowhere near proven. Would make more sense for Freo to chase English since they have Darcy, they know Lobb wants out, and English is a straight upgrade on Lobb.
